Defibrillator Special

We have completed the installation of the 3 defibrillators in the Parish with stand out graphics detailing their location and what to do if they are required in an emergency.

We would like to assure you that you need no training to use a defibrillator. When you phone 999 and they decide that you need to use a defibrillator, as well as the machine itself talking you through everything, the Ambulance Service will be guiding you the whole time.

What you need to know is the location of your nearest defibrillator, and there is a cut out and keep leaflet on the reverse of this page identifying our three plus the one in Winterbourne Gunner. Make sure you know which one is nearest to you.

Idmiston Parish Newsletter Page 11 winterbourne allotments: land of hope...... ?

“Allotments are a great hobby. They’re cheap, you get healthy exercise without having to pay for a gym or run around in circles, and you get to eat healthy fruit and vegetables without all those pesticide residues.”

his is a quote from an ecellent website for allotment gardeners http:www.allotment-garden.org and in my eperience its a perfect description. n the Winterbournes we are fortunate to still hae an allotment garden site. rom the records held by the Bourne Valley istorical Society our allotments appear to date back to the Second Annual nclosure Act of which led to a proision that land should be resered for allotments for the poor. urrent rules regarding allotments derie from th entury legislation including the Allotment Act of which denes an allotment garden as an allotment.which is wholly or mainly cultiated by the occupier for the production of egetables and fruit crops for consumption by himself or his family though this can coer school and community allotment garden proects. he Winterbourne allotment site o Down Barn oad shown right from OS map is the last of three such sites established in the Winterbournes of the other two one has been returned to farmland and the other is now the site of Winterbourne Earls School. t is also now the only such site along the Bourne Valley between LaerstockSalisbury and . Allotment gardens are now considered an important community amenity not ust for the production of food left: broad beans are innitely better when home grown but also as an educational

amenity for schools and other groups as a leisure actiity that is healthy and sociable and as a site for releant community proects. Winterbourne Parish ouncil is committed to maintaining this important amenity and during the coming year we will work on an allotment deelopment strategy in consultation with the current tenants and others interested in the site. n the meantime we do hae acant plots. While we would hae to gie priority to Winterbourne residents in the eent of oersubscription we do not currently hae a waiting list and would be delighted to hear from any gardeners or aspiring gardeners who would like to try their hand at allotment gardening. Idmiston Parish Newsletter Page 20 lighting matters: feel brighter and be healthier by Ira Blake of lIGHt my SPaCe; Salisbury’s only lighting design specialists, based in Porton

The lights in your home, can make a difference to the way you feel and can even affect your health according to research published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (2011). Light is critical to human functioning in that it allows us to see things and perform visual tasks, and important because it affects us

n psychologically - by aecting mood and perception n physiologically - by controlling our body clocks and by enabling critical chemical reactions in the body.

Eye strain headaches low mood poor concentration are ust some of the early warning signs that we may not be listening to the needs of our bodies and succumbing to the pressures and stress associated with modern life. Being continually eposed to something that isnt a positie eperience for you stimulates a negatie eect and reactions that can hae cumulatie and long-term consequences. Lighting also has two-fold role to play in maintaining health with regards to preention of accidents and aiding recoery.

LIGhTInG AnD ThE PREvEnTIon oF ACCIDEnTS About million slips trips and falls are recorded in the each year with . million requiring AE care. any of these could hae been preented by adequate lighting. A Salisbury optometrist eplains that: “In Winter, there is a spike nationwide in the number of older people seeking eye tests due to experiencing a trip or fall (or an increase in frequency of those events). In many cases, there is no deterioration in their vision and, on enquiry, it appears that inadequate lighting is often the culprit.” t is estimated that oer of homes do not hae the recommended leels of lighting. Some LED bulbs can last up to years and need to be regularly cleaned to maintain light leels. LEDS also fade oer time so the light leels can deteriorate unnoticed. raditional incandescent bulbs should be replaced immediately once blown with a bulb of equal output type and tone. iing bulbs creates an uneen spread and distribution of light reducing your ability to see uneen surfaces or obstructions.

LIGhTInG AnD RECovERy FRoM ILLnESS Proiding good lighting has been clinically proen to help patients recoer more quickly from illness and feel better. f a person is recoering at home this is especially releant but not limited to people with an inury or condition that aects their brain their balance andor their ision. Studies hae also shown that errors in simple tasks like dispensing medication are linked to inadequate lighting. f you would like to know more about how your lighting can improe your sense of wellbeing and the enoyment of your home and garden you can download your free guides here: www.lightmyspace.co.uk

Letter from the vicar’s Wife... We can shop for many wonderful things in this country. Our choices of food and clothing and entertainment are endless. Unfortunately, a good many things that cause us actual harm, either mentally or physically are endlessly available too, and we often consume them with equal enthusiasm.

All this choice and easy availability is very distracting, and time consuming. It often doesn’t leave us with the time to cultivate those things that are just as necessary to our well being but are things we can’t purchase in a shop or on a website. We can’t buy patience, kindness, understanding, wisdom or courage in the face of troubles. We can’t buy peace or love or friendship, although we sometimes try to.

We are so used to being able to use money to get what we need or want that we almost give up on something that doesn’t involve a financial transaction. Yet we can find peace and joy and comfort in hard times, not through what we have bought or own, but by knowing that we have, as often as we have found it possible, done the right thing, in the right way at the right time.

Perhaps that’s why so many of us find it hard to believe in salvation. Bunny rabbits and chocolate and chicks are a lovely part of Easter but they are not what Easter is about. Easter is about celebrating that God our creator, who loves us in spite of our indifference, to Him and each other, our stubbornness, our busy-ness and general inability to act in even our own best interests, died for us in order that our mistakes need not colour our future as well as our present and our past. Faith and grace can’t be purchased but they can be cultivated. Spend some time this Easter counting your blessings, stopping those things that you know do you, and others, harm and leave room to do yourselves, and others, some good. It’s life transforming....

Bless you, Mari
