CHARLOTTE MERCHANTS United Way of Central Carolinas FOUNDATION 2 Dear Friends, Differentiated Site Coordinator Roles

Several years ago, our team recognized that we must

evolve our work in order to provide more tailored case management for each student at the level and intensity that his or her circumstances merit. All of our students are dynamic, smart, resilient kids, and each one has their own set of strengths and needs. Some are facing chronic crises, Child trauma, and severe situations and need more intensive support to stabilize their situation so that they are ready to learn, while others require more exposure to new opportunities Child and experiences to support and sustain their educational journey. With this in mind, we developed four distinct direct-service positions to distinguish the level and type Child of interventions to be delivered, based upon the demographics, the needs, and the Child strengths of specific students at CIS-served schools:

check-circle Intensive Case Manager, providing stabilization and holistic, wraparound services for students/families in crisis or experiencing trauma. check-circle Check & Connect Coordinator, helping students to establish new patterns positions by the end of the 2018-19 school year. Most important, our students and families are receiving services and support that are even better aligned with their needs.

In short, we believed that implementing these four distinct direct-service roles would As always, thank you for your continued generosity and commitment as we continue to grow allow us to enhance our impact and provide students with the right support, in the right and enhance our services to the thousands of students and families we support each year. amount, at the right time. It can also be an opportunity to encourage strong bonds between siblings, which strengthens the family unit as a whole. Karel James Intensive Case Manager RENAISSANCE WEST STEAM ACADEMY

Intensive Case Manager

The Intensive Case Manager works with students and families who are in crisis or experiencing acute trauma, such as homelessness, domestic abuse/violence, addiction, loss of job/primary income, and similar severe situations. While there is a focus on attendance and academics, the first priority is to provide stability for the student and build a relationship with the family and establish trust by providing resources and support for their immediate needs. 4 Financial Donors Special thanks to the following for their financial support from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019: GUARDIAN ANGELS ($100,000+) The John S. and James L. Students assigned to an Educational & Career Coach are maintaining grades and doing well academically and have no attendance issues, but they need support to remain on track for graduation and prepare for college or career. The priority for the ECC is to provide students with college/career information and guidance, career exposure through job shadowing, internships, and networking, as well as opportunities for cultural enrichment, life skills and leadership development.

A group of CIS seniors research college scholarship opportunities with guidance from their Educational & Career Coach.

The 2018-19 school year was full of transformative “social capital” experiences for our students, volunteers and partners. At its core, social capital is the idea that relationships and networks have value. At its best, it can be a mechanism to build bridges across difference and offer benefits for each contributor. This past year, with Communities In Schools leading the way, over 200 community members and nearly 300 CIS students benefited by engaging in 600+ social capital exchanges.

With intention, we built innovative strategies that contributed to these meaningful exchanges between students and community members. Critical to the process was the formation of our Youth Advisory Board, consisting of 24 CIS students from 12 high schools, who provided vital insights that helped us incorporate student voice in our planning. We offered job shadow creation workshops, where business leaders enhanced their understanding of how to challenge the growth of our students while expanding their possibilities and expressing care, ultimately using these guiding principles to create outstanding customized job shadow events for students. We partnered with CREW (Charlotte Real Estate Women) to hold a career exploration day focused on real estate and related professions for female students at East Mecklenburg High School; and with St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church for a facilitated discussion between church members and students at Cochrane/iMeck Academy to learn how volunteers could best support students’ personal growth and their career aspirations.

Our Social Capital Team was most excited to launch two community-wide events in 2018-19. “Access Granted” matched community volunteers with high school seniors to help them refine their college scholarship essays. “Lean Forward,” in partnership with Accenture, brought together 160+ students from six high schools and 90 community members from 35 companies for a day of career exploration, strategy sessions, resume crafting, mock interviews, and opportunities to expand networks and build relationships.
