Dame Clara Butt (1872 – 1936) AUSTRALIAN EPHEMERA COLLECTION FINDING AID DAME CLARA BUTT (1872 – 1936) PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAMS AND EPHEMERA (PROMPT) PRINTED AUSTRALIANA JANUARY 2015 This finding aid lists programs and ephemera which document all aspects of Clara Butt’s career in Australia and overseas. Clara Butt was an English contralto who was celebrated for her sturdy and broad lower range. She achieved musical success in Britain quickly after completing her academic studies. She went on to lead a charmed life, eventually marrying and touring with the prominent baritone Kennerley Rumford, and was sometimes called Clara Butt-Rumford after her marriage. Her fame was founded upon her remarkably imposing voice and a surprisingly agile singing technique and in her appearances on the concert stage as well as at festivals, and she toured Australia regularly. Adriana Nelli ABSTRACT Triestine migration to Australia is the direct consequence of numerous disputations over the city's political boundaries in the immediate post- World War II period. As such the triestini themselves are not simply part of an overall migratory movement of Italians who took advantage of Australia's post-war immigration program, but their migration is also the reflection of an important period in the history of what today is known as the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.. 1954 marked the beginning of a brief but intense migratory flow from the city of Trieste towards Australia. Following a prolonged period of Anglo-American administration, the city had been returned to Italian jurisdiction once more; and with the dismantling of the Allied caretaker government and the subsequent economic integration of Trieste into the Italian State, a climate of uncertainty and precariousness had left the Triestines psychologically disenchanted and discouraged.

    FAURÉ: CANTIQUE DE JEAN RACINE TAVENER: THE LAMB Welcome... From the DIRECTOR OF MUSIC A very warm welcome to you all and thank you for coming to St Bartholomew’s Church, Orford. The Choir always enjoy singing here with the Church’s beauty, vibrant acoustics, and its relationship with Benjamin Britten, who performed and recorded here on many occasions. Tonight’s concert shows the range of musical styles the Choir sing, from the 15th to the 20th Century. This is our last concert of the Season but we return to Snape Maltings on 23rd November with a performance of the Verdi Requiem and again on 21st March 2020 with a Bach and Vivaldi programme. We return to Orford on 16th May with music by Mozart, Purcell and Haydn. Edmond Fivet From the CHAIRMAN The choir has had a very enjoyable and successful 2018-19 season. No one will forget the atmospheric and sell-out performance of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace, last November at Snape, held so close to the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice in the Great War. This was followed by a totally contrasting concert in March when we celebrated the genius of The Amazing Mr Handel in a number of his choral and instrumental works. Tonight’s performance gives us an opportunity to display more of the breadth of repertoire undertaken by the choir. At the end of the season on the choir’s behalf I must offer grateful thanks to all our patrons and sponsors for their continuing support.

    Formerly the Actors’ Orphanage Fund & the Actors’ Charitable Trust, TACT. A sketch of ACT’s history th to mark our 125 birthday by Robert Ashby, executive director Mrs Kittie Carson, wife of the editor of the Stage newspaper, became increasingly concerned about the welfare of actors and others connected with the theatre, particularly women and children. She felt that provision by other charities and friendly societies was inadequate; she disliked the requirement of several for one to be a member in order to benefit, that many had age restrictions, and that all were run by men. Mrs Carson’s first move in November 1891 was to found the Theatrical Ladies’ Guild (today The Theatrical Guild). Its purpose was quite simply to provide clothing, whether committee members’ cast-offs, donations from supporters, or items sewn and tailored by the Guild’s members themselves. Mrs Carson’s reasoning was that actresses who constantly travelled and who struggled to make ends meet, had no time to sew, and unemployed actresses certainly could not afford new clothes. Her new charity became closely linked with the Ladies’ Needlework Guild, and committee meetings seemed intertwined with ‘sewing bees’. Mrs Carson’s husband, Charles, alerted readers of the Stage to the need for help. The response from readers reinforced Mrs Carson’s sense of urgency in helping the profession’s children. Care of the young “would add solidity and prestige to the drama and its exponents”. Although the Actors’ Benevolent Fund had been asked repeatedly to take on responsibility for the children since 1888, it had been unwilling, already having so many incapacitated adult actors to support.
