Abstracts for the Annual SECAC Meeting in Columbus, Ohio October 25th-28th, 2017 Conference Chair, Aaron Petten, Columbus College of Art & Design Emma Abercrombie, SCAD Savannah The Millennial and the Millennial Female: Amalia Ulman and ORLAN This paper focuses on Amalia Ulman’s digital performance Excellences and Perfections and places it within the theoretical framework of ORLAN’s surgical performance series The Reincarnation of Saint Orlan. Ulman’s performance occurred over a twenty-one week period on the artist’s Instagram page. She posted a total of 184 photographs over twenty-one weeks. When viewed in their entirety and in relation to one another, the photographs reveal a narrative that can be separated into three distinct episodes in which Ulman performs three different female Instagram archetypes through the use of selfies and common Instagram image tropes. This paper pushes beyond the casual connection that has been suggested, but not explored, by art historians between the two artists and takes the comparison to task. Issues of postmodern identity are explored as they relate to the Internet culture of the 1990s when ORLAN began her surgery series and within the digital landscape of the Web 2.0 age that Ulman works in, where Instagram is the site of her performance and the selfie is a medium of choice. Abercrombie situates Ulman’s “image-body” performance within the critical framework of feminist performance practice, using the postmodern performance of ORLAN as a point of departure. J. Susanne Mei, General Manager, People/Entertainment Weekly Network Susanne Mei is the General Manager of People/Entertainment Weekly Network—Time Inc.’s first-ever Over-the-top (OTT) service. When she joined Time Inc. last year, Mei worked across all Time Inc. brands focusing on video distribution partnerships. In her management of the ad supported video on demand (AVOD) platform, she oversees the strategy, operations, revenue and marketing. Mei joins Time Inc. with over 20 years of experience in entertainment business. Prior to joining Time Inc. she was Vice President of Digital Distribution and Business Development at AMC Networks. In this role she was responsible for revenue and strategy on all transactional digital platforms including iTunes, Xbox, Amazon, GooglePlay and others. Additionally, she led the team that launched the SundanceNOW Doc Club subscription video on demand (SVOD) service and ran day-to-day operations. Previously, Mei served as the Vice President of Digital Media for Smithsonian Networks during the initial launch of the network. From 2002 to 2006, Mei was a Director of Business Development at Showtime focusing on mobile, VOD and new channel development. She was part of the team that executed the deal with The Smithsonian Institution to launch the Smithsonian Network. Her start in the strategic world of digital media began as a Strategy Consultant at Concrete Media in 2000. Before that she spent several years at ABC News in production and was a part of the team that developed and launched the original abcnews.com. Mei earned her BA at Tufts University and her MBA at The Stern School of Business at NYU. -

Barbara Nessim: On View An Artful Life September 19, 2014– January 11, 2015 FIRST RETROSPECTIVE IN THE U.S. TO EXAMINE A PIONEERING ARTIST AND ILLUSTRATOR A constant innovator for more than five decades, Barbara Nessim was one of the first professional illustrators to master the computer as an artistic tool. This exhibition examines her sketchbooks, hand-drawn and computer- generated illustrations, paintings, collages, textiles, and fashion. Barbara Nessim: An Artful Life presents an overview of the work of this pioneering American artist and designer from the 1960s to the present day. Nessim’s distinctive illustrations have appeared on the covers of nearly every major American magazine, including Time, Rolling Stone, and the New York Times Magazine.
