Cantando Festival April 7-9th, 2019

Celebrating our 20th Anniversary!

Presented by New Era Music Festivals

April 7-9th, 2019 Director’s Message Congratulations This year we celebrate Cantando’s 20th anniversary of providing quality musical experiences for our participants. We are hosting To all Cantando Festival Participants! Cantando festivals in Edmonton, Sun Peaks, and Whistler and are thrilled to have over 6500 participants from throughout western and the Pacific Northwest of the USA. EXCITING All of our festivals feature a variety of venues for young musicians to perform and take part in workshops with some amazing FUTURE FESTIVALS adjudicators and clinicians. The Francis Winspear Centre for Music in Edmonton just celebrated its 20th anniversary, and it is the reason I started these festivals. It is perhaps one of the best stages in North America for musical performance, and I thought that young musicians should experience this at least once in their life. The venues in Sun Peaks and Whistler are not necessarily Sun Peaks Whistler as acoustically friendly, but the mountain environment and the ANTANDO ESTIVAL ANTANDO ESTIVAL friendly nature of the festival make your time here equally rewarding. We are particularly proud C F C F of the outstanding guest groups we host at the festivals. In Edmonton, we feature several groups Apr 17-19, 2020 Apr 30-May 3, 2020 including two wonderful University Wind Ensembles, one from the University of Alberta and the 30 min. from Kamloops, BC Whistler Village, BC other from the University of Manitoba. They share the opening Sunday night performance in the Winspear. We are also adding a pre-concert show featuring the Ecole Sisler Chamber Choir at 7:15 www.SunPeaksMusicFestival.com www.WhistlerMusicFestival.ca in the front lobby. On Monday evening, we feature two groups from MacEwan University. Their

popular percussion ensemble opens the concert followed by a Big Band of Faculty, Alumni and Students. On Tuesday evening, we feature the festival mass choir as well as perennially popular Edmonton CANADIAN ANAHEIM Kokopelli Choir and the vocal jazz group from that organization call ‘Nuf Sed. Sun Peaks features the CANTANDO FESTIVAL ESTIVAL Thunderbird Brass Quintet performing at noon on Saturday and our evening performance features Music F our festival mass choir and the Anita Eccleston Quintet, an outstanding ensemble led by vocalist/ Apr 5- 8, 2020 Apr 23-27, 2020 trumpeter Anita Eccleston (also an adjudicator at the festival). This year in Whistler, instrumental FrancisWinspear Winspear Centre, Centre Edmonton for Music Disneyland, CA groups include the UBC Wind Ensemble performing on Friday night and the MacEwan Big Band on Saturday. Vocal groups include a Friday performance with ‘Nuf Sed and a Saturday performance with the Central Washington University Chamber Choir and our festival mass choir. Programming Enquiries: Registration and Travel: www.cantando.org www.affinitytours.com A great lineup of adjudicators and clinicians are coming as usual. These are musicians and educators Dr. Prime: 780-940-1806 1-800-665-7559 who have strong backgrounds in working with young students, and I know your time with them will be transformational.

A highlight of the Edmonton and Whistler festival this year will include the premiere performance MAKE CANTANDO A GREAT CHOICE FOR 2020! of a flute concerto written by esteemed Edmonton composer, Allan Gilliland. Jim Walker returns to premier this piece and his bio is found later in the program. Enjoy your Cantando experience. 817 Cambie Street , BC.
