Rule Changes Following the completion of the 2007 volleyball campaign the NCAA decided to make some changes to the rule book. Starting in 2008 each match will now be the best of five sets instead of games.

The changes also reflect a change in the number of points needed to win a match. Like international matches, each set will now be played to 25, with teams still needing to win by two points. The final set will still be played to 15. The final change will allow only 12 substitutes per set.

4 2008 MURRAY STATE RACER VOLLEYBALL This is Racer Volleyball Racers aid Katrina victims When Hurricane Katrina cancelled the early-season volleyball tournament at South in 2005, the Racers picked it up and made it more than just a volleyball tournament. The Helping Hands Classic — which also featured South Alabama and Youngstown State — brought in several donations for hurricane victims. Murray State sent back two dozen boxes of food items, toiletries and other necessities with the South Alabama team to help residents of the Gulf coast. No strangers to charity works, the Racers also take part in the annual Relay for Life campaign to raise funds for cancer research.

Racers On The Road

Travel has always been an integral part of Racer volleyball. Murray State volleyball has taken the Racers to Boston (left), en route to the 1999 VICE Tournament, where MSU upended host Connecticut to earn the tournament title; the Grand Canyon (above right) while taking part in the 2000 Fiesta Bowl; and in 2006, the Racers took to the beach at Jacksonville, Fla., in the UNF Labor Day Classic.

2008 MURRAY STATE RACER VOLLEYBALL 39 Volleyball Facilities

Racer Arena Since opening in 1954, Racer Arena has held several distinctions, including nationally-televised men’s basketball games, regionally-televised women’s basketball games and basketball conference championships and National Invitation Tournament games.

Now, it holds yet another distinction as the nation’s largest volleyball-only facility among NCAA Division I schools, with a capacity of 5,500 This distinction came about when, in 1998, Murray State’s men’s and women’s basketball teams moved into the Regional Special Events Center, making Racer volleyball the only varsity sport to use the facility for regular-season competition.

The Racers hold a 144-98 (.595) record in home matches. While many of MSU’s home matches had been held in the North Gym adjacent to Racer Arena, the main floor has been the predominant home of Murray State volleyball. In Ohio Valley Conference play, the Racers are 106-57 (.650) at home.

In 2002, the current SportCourt was brought in to enhance the volleyball arena’s atmosphere, helping to make Racer Arena not only a tough place for opponents to play, but also the home of contemporary state-of-the-art flooring.

Racer Arena has been host to several strong Division I volleyball teams such as Alabama-Birmingham, Arkansas State, Auburn, Louisville, Memphis, Mississippi State, Saint Louis, Southern Illinois and Southern Miss.

Now entering its 55th season of service to Murray State University and its 25th season as a volleyball venue, Racer Arena continues to uphold its reputation as a formidable athletics site.

Racer Volleyball Conference Room & Locker Room The Racer volleyball conference room and locker room are located adjacent to the North Gym, which is accessible through the commons area of Racer Arena.

The conference room provide the team an area to meet in comfort and style. Several couches and chairs allow the Racers to sit comfortably during pre- practice or pre-match meetings, while the hardwood floors provide a touch of charm. A large-screen TV allows the team to review matches and match preparation films.

The locker room is a redecorated area formerly used by the Murray State men’s basketball team before the Regional Special Events Center was built. Individualized locker areas with nameplates and cushioned chairs provide pri- vacy and comfort. Roomy shower facilities and restroom areas complement this area as a fully functional place for preparation before matches and prac- tices and changing after matches.

40 2008 MURRAY STATE RACER VOLLEYBALL Weaver Academic Center

Backing up its commitment to ensure that Racer student-athletes have every opportunity to excel in the classroom as well as on the athletic fields, Murray State athletics established a state-of-the- art academic center.

Named in honor of longtime supporters Jan and Dick Weaver, who provided funding for the building of the center, the Weaver Academic Enhancement Center was opened at June 30, 1997, and immediately began to pay dividends in the MSU athletics program.

Today, the Weaver Center is a spacious facility equipped with individual and group study areas, but the centerpiece of the Weaver Center is its computer lab.

In 2007, the lab was outfitted with 15 new desktop computers. Student-athletes can use the computers to access the internet for research and to complete class projects and papers.

MSU student-athletes also use the Weaver Center for study hall, which meets throughout the day. During study hall, student-athletes have access to tutors, study groups and computers.

The center continues to play a key role in the academic success of MSU student-athletes. For the 2007-08 academic year 153 student-athletes had a 3.5 or higher grade point average and 47 had perfect 4.0 GPA’s.

The center is open 12 hours a day, six days a week during the school year, with an abbreviated schedule during the summer and holidays.

Currently, the university has three major building projects under way and several others on the drawing board. Most notably, the university just completed a project which included an impressive entrance to the campus and a fence reminiscent of the ones which encircle the many thoroughbred horse farms which Kentucky is known.
