WILSON’S SCHOOL Issue 166 October 1, 2010 WEEKLY UPDATE NJDC DEBATING COMPETITION

Many congratulations to George Driscoll, Harry Gower, Conrad Je eries and Will Ries, who as the Y11 team made a successful debut at the NJDC, a national tournament run by the same administration as the Cambridge debate but in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. After coming through three very competitive rounds, Wilson’s missed making the nal four out of sixty teams by only two points. It is a tribute to the hard work put in by our students that, with no prior experi- ence of the British Parliamentary style, they individually placed within the top quartFS. ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

This year, for probably the rst time since the school was re-opened in 1883 (and possibly for the rst time since its foundation in 1615), the school’s Entrance Examination was held in September. With over 1500 candidates, the organisation required was extensive and as ever the sta and students of Wil- son’s rose to the challenge with aplomb. Special thanks must go to the Year 9 & 10 boys who acted as friendly guides within the building and of course the CCF who masterminded the external operation!

The school was tremendously grateful to have the expert assistance of Police Sgt John Withersby and his team who helped minimise disruption to the local com- munity by monitoring the roads around the school. We must also acknowledge the support of the Surrey Health & Racquets Club (ESPORTA) who kindly pro- vided us with access to their car park in order to keep To parents of pupils at Wilson’s School, sta and governors tra c owing on Hannibal Way. 29 September 2010 We wish all the candidates the best of luck. HOUSES TO SPONSOR CHILDREN VIA ACTIONAID Meet Boaz Mahiri who is being sponsored by Green- coat House. Last term the 6th formers were asked to consider each House sponsoring a Child via Actionaid. This would mean that every member of the house would need to contribute £1 each school year for a minimum of ve years. The Houses would be able to write to their sponsored child and receive correspond- ence and photos from them too. As a sponsor you can help end poverty for the child, their family and others in the com- munity thus giving poorer people the chance to work their way out of poverty and improve their living conditions.

We are proud to say that 3 of the houses decided to sponsor a child and they will each be receiving 180 points for their house.

For more information you can visit the Actionaid website. http://www.actionaid.org.uk/

If you would like to nd out more information about the children being sponsored do keep an eye on the House noticeboards which is where the information will be placed.

CAMBERWELL HOUSE SPONSORED RELEBOHILE

Please find below some background information on Relebohile who is being sponsored by Camberwell House.

Relebohile Molia was born in 2001, and he is one of a family of four children. The family are Christian and they speak Sesotho. His family live in a house built of stones with a thatched roof. Houses in rural areas are either round and called ‘randabole’ or traditional rectangular houses called ‘heisi’. Relebohile’s father is a farmer and his mother works on their land.

HIV/AIDS affects education. Many teachers are infected and too ill to teach. Inadequate classrooms, unqualified teachers, remoteness of villages and compulsory school fees hinder children’s ability to receive a basic primary education. Relebohile goes to the local state school where he is learning to read and write.

ActionAid is working with Relebohile’s community to access their rights to food, liveli- hoods, water, education and helathcare, with particular focus on women and children affected by HIV/AIDS. WILSON’S SCHOOL Issue 170 November 5, 2010 WEEKLY UPDATE

For enterprise week teams from each of the school houses were challenged to design a product or service that could be sold on a market stall. The brief stipulated that it should be ready for Christmas and be different from anything else that might be available. The day started with a team building task which allowed the groups to elect a leader and allocate team roles. Once ideas were generated they were further developed and prices and costs calculated ready for presentation to the judges, the Headmaster Mr. Charnock and Year Manager Mr. Phillips. The ideas appeared to centre around food and smells, these included a one stop stall for all your sustainable Christmas products, a world food stall, cards with a Christmas fragrance, a hot fruit soup and winners - Fragrables, an air freshener in the shape of a bauble. Well done to Camberwell who both won points for their house and whose entry will be put forward for the national competition. This will be a great opportunity for the boys to flex their debating skills, and prepare for the upcoming Oxford and Cambridge Debates, as well as having the opportunity to spend time at the universities they may consider applying to in the future. SUTTON SECONDARY SCHOOLS CHALLENGE On Monday this week, six boys from Year 8 represented Wilson’s in the inaugural Sutton Secondary Schools Maths Challenge. This was led by STEMNET (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network) Ambassadors who were able to inform students first hand about mathematics used in context. This included real life examples from the Actuarial profession, Project Management and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing upon which each of the challenges were based. The boys representing Wilson’s were: Harry Goodburn, Luke Curran, Max Rivens, Yusuf El-Hilly, Neev Trehan and Harry Fairman, all of whom were exem- plary in their teamworking skills and determination. Although we did not collect the spoils on the day, the boys gained valuable experience competing as a team and discovered first hand about maths used in real life professional applications.
