ABSTRACT Missing Pieces is a novel about mental health nursing and the difficulties faced by the profession as Ron seeks an understanding of his personal and professional world. The novel challenges traditional stereotypes, offering a greater range of character depictions. The critical discussion asks why mental health nursing is represented in fiction like it is. By first contextualizing the argument within the sphere of fictional representations of other health professions, it then examines the stereotypes of mental health nursing in fiction and argues that, while literary shortfalls are in part supported by clinical evidence, existing novels fail to accurately depict the experience of the profession. With reference to the nursing theory of Peplau and others, we not only see the failures of fiction writers, but realise that mental health nursing must assume some culpability, by failing to disseminate its identity with sufficient clarity. Looking at the work of Freya Barrington and Monica Starkman in other health disciplines, it asks how fictionalised accounts of mental health practitioner/writers can integrate into health education programmes, and looks at the professional benefits of writing fiction including continuing professional development.     The Honorary Graduand: Nathan Filer The Orator: Dr Neil Summers Nathan Filer is to be awarded the Honorary Degree of Master of Letters. Nathan Filer was born in Bristol in 1980. He attended The Ridings High School, and in 2005 completed an undergraduate degree in Mental Health Nursing at the University of the West of England, obtaining a first-class honours. He worked as a staff nurse on an acute psychiatric ward at Southmead Hospital before taking up a role in mental health research at the University of Bristol. His work in this field focussed on service user and carer involvement in research. He also worked as performance poet, contributing regularly to festivals and spoken- word events across the UK, and featuring on television and radio. In 2013 his debut novel, The Shock of the Fall, was published in the UK. It describes the life of a young man from Bristol dealing with his grief at the death of his brother, and experience of mental health care services for schizophrenia. This novel received wide critical acclaim, winning The Costa Book of the Year, The Betty Trask Prize, The National Book Award for Popular Fiction and The Writers’ Guild Award for Best First Novel. It was a Sunday Times Bestseller, and has been translated into thirty languages. Filer has been an outspoken critic of government cuts to NHS mental health care services, and has written about this for The Guardian newspaper. He has also spoken about these issues on national radio, and given numerous lectures at universities, conferences and charities – including the inaugural public lecture at the Royal College of Nursing, as part of World Mental Health Day.

Sir David Hare (b 1947) Hare was born in Bexhill, East Sussex into a family with no tradition in theatre but which was keen for him to better himself through education, with the goal of becoming a chartered accountant. He has written little of his family and childhood except to record that Bexhill in the Fifties was "incredibly dull". In 1970 his first play 'Slag' was performed at the Hampstead Theatre Club and a year later he first worked at the National Theatre, beginning one of the longest relationships of any playwright with a contemporary theatre. Through the 1970s he also ran a touring theatre company working with a number of other writers and then in 1978 wrote 'Plenty', his most ambitious play to date which was almost universally panned by the London critics.
