Fire Science Industry Credentials

Details regarding Industry Credential Scheduling and Cost:

This program prepares students to seek certification or licensure for multiple industry credentials. Payment and scheduling responsibility is noted per industry credential as follows:

1 West-MEC schedules and pre-pays testing fees for the industry credential which is offered in class to eligible students

2 West-MEC will reimburse exam/license fee to eligible students, student is responsible for applying, scheduling, testing, and submitting for reimbursement

3 Student is responsible for applying, scheduling, testing, and paying for the industry credential, should the student seek it

For further details regarding Industry Credential scheduling and cost please contact: Katie Mehin, West-MEC Director of Career Services | Email: [email protected] | Office: 623-738-0057

Required for Industry Employment The industry credential is required for employment in the field a majority of the time Successfully completing the West-MEC Fire Science and EMT courses and certifications enables students to meet the three (3) pre-requisites needed for admission to the Glendale Community College Fire Department Operations course, widely known as the “Fire Academy.” The “Fire Academy” is specifically for students seeking a career in fire service.

1 Pathway to Wildland Fire Fighter: [Prerequisite for “FIRE ACADEMY”]  Students who satisfy the requirements of FSC 110 Wildland Firefighter will be eligible to be hired by a Wildland Firefighting Agency once they have attained the age of 18. The hiring agency would issue the hired individual the Red Card certification.

1 Pathway to Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT): [Prerequisite for “FIRE ACADEMY”]  The CPAT test is a pass/fail test of 8 critical physical tasks that simulate actual job duties on the fire ground.  Students will have the opportunity to prepare for and complete the CPAT test as a part of FSC 130 Fitness for Firefighters/CPAT. (View video preview at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxtOJV3Ll2Y)

Pathway to International Fire Service Accreditation Congress Certification: [Prerequisite for “FIRE ACADEMY”]  Testing Agency: International Fire Service Accreditation Congress Certification (IFSAC)  2 For the IFSAC HazMat Certification: o Students will have the opportunity to complete this certification as part of the FSC 105 Hazardous Materials Class that is a part of the West-MEC EMT Central Program. o SEE PAGE TWO OF CERTIFICATION INFORMATION FOR FURTHER DETAILS  3 For the IFSAC Firefighter I & II Certification: o Students will have to complete the following pre-requisite courses and requirements in order to apply to, and attend the Glendale Community College Fire Academy (FSC 102) which will gain them the opportunity to receive their IFSAC Firefighter I & II certification. . Courses Required Prior to Applying for FSC 102:  EMT-104 Emergency Medical Technology  FSC-105 Hazardous Materials First Responder [Prerequisite for “FIRE ACADEMY”]  FSC-130 Fitness For Firefighters/CPAT [Prerequisite for “FIRE ACADEMY”] . EMT Certification and Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) must be completed and passed before application will be accepted. o This class (FSC 102) will prepare students for state and IFSAC certification; however, there are no current Arizona agencies providing IFSAC certifications at this time. . IFSAC Firefighter 1 and 2 Certification is not required by all Arizona agencies for employment.  Testing Fees: http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/fsc/AcadApp2013.pdf Updated: June 21, 2019 Fire Science Program Certification Information

Dear Student:

Congratulations on your decision to pursue training in the field of Fire Science. In each West-MEC Central Program we encourage students to seek industry licensure related to their field of study. As a student completing Fire Science, if you are planning to apply to the Fire Academy in the future it is pre-requisite to the Academy that you obtain your IFSAC HazMat Certification (test fee for this certification is currently $100).

A recent change has been imposed by the Center for Fire Service Excellence in regards to testing eligibility for the IFSAC Hazmat Certification. Under the new testing requirements individuals will not be allowed to test until turning 18 years of age. Both West-MEC and Glendale Community College want you to successful in obtaining your Hazmat Certification upon turning 18 years of age and will assist you in testing when you turn 18.

Glendale Community College will offer a refresher course to students who have completed the Hazardous Materials First Responder (FSC 105) course and are unable to test for the Hazmat Certification due to the new requirements. If you turn 18 within 1 year of the date the examination is offered in FSC 105 (usually in early March) you will be allowed to the sit for the test on the date of your 18th birthday without completing a refresher course (however, the refresher course is highly encouraged). If you turn 18 a year after the date of the examination is offered in FSC 105, you will need to complete a refresher course offered through Glendale Community College to be eligible to test.

At this time, the refresher course is anticipated to be $100 per student, and occur on four consecutive Sundays from 9am to 2pm once during the fall semester and once during the spring semester. Students under the age of 18 are encouraged to provide their best contact information to West-MEC Career Services Manager Katie Mehin who will assist students in obtaining up-to-date information as to when refresher courses will be offered and how to register for the course.

It is West-MEC’s goal that all students who have completed the West-MEC/GCC Fire Science program will successfully obtain their HazMat Certification, which is a pre-requisite for those continuing on to the Fire Academy.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Katie Mehin ([email protected] or 623 738 0057).

Sincerely,

Katie Mehin

West-MEC Career Services Manager

Please note: If you are unable to complete the HazMat Certification during the course, this will not affect your course completion. If you meet all other course requirements indicated in the course syllabus, you will receive the appropriate college and high school credits for the course.
