Whilst most of us are recovering from the festive period and counting the cost of overeating and probably a little too much alcohol, one group of Otley residents are already looking forward to next Christmas.

For the organisers of the Otley Victorian Fayre planning for Christmas starts early each spring with road closures, programmes, fairground rides and market stalls to organise, to ensure the success of one of Otley’s most prestigious annual events.

The Otley Victorian Fayre has a small committee of 10 people who give a little time each month over the course of the year to ensure that each Fayre gets better and better.

“A few years ago the Fayre looked as if it wasn’t going to survive” says present Chair, Jeanette Morris, “We had to cancel the Fayre due to a national strike by firefighters and the amount of money left in the accounts wasn’t enough to keep things going from one year to the next”. However, after a few years hard work by the present committee members and some prudent bookkeeping, the Fayre looks as thought it can survive for another few years.

“The problem we have now though, is that we could do with a few more people to help us with some of the organising each year” says The Victorian Fayre Committee, Mayor and Consort judging window displays. Jeanette, “Although our small friendly team is dedicated to keeping things going, it is getting a bit much for such a small group of people to deal with”. As a result, Jeanette is appealing for new volunteers to join them Otley Garden & Allotment Competition and help with some of the organising activities. “Our committee has members from a wide variety of ages and backgrounds but the It may be early spring but already the planning for the new competition is one thing that links them is to try and do the best for the Fayre and well in hand. You will recall that last year a straw poll was taken at the for Otley and to have fun! However, some of the jobs we have to awards ceremony to see when most gardeners would like to have the do are getting a bit too much. For example, just having a few more competition. The general consensus that July was better than June. The people to help organise the programme each year would be a great judge will be Mr Richard Gill. He is a respected person and adds help and share the workload around a little”. considerable weight to the competition. Because of this he is in much demand and will only be available to judge the gardens of Otley in late If you have some time available to help, or would like to find out July. This will mean that those ‘early’ gardens may have trouble keeping more about the activities that go towards running the Fayre, their blooms fresh until late July but it is clear that the Council will have give Jeanette a call one evening on 01943 850685. to accept a late July date with Mr Gill so the competition can continue You never know – you might make a few new friends in the with its authority and value. process too! So here is the early warning to start planning your bedding plants and planning your gardens for this year to be at their peak in the second half of July. A precise date will be published in the local newspaper and in the next Maypole Community Area edition of Otley Matters once the date has been confirmed with Mr Gill.

The new Maypole area opposite the Civic Centre in Manchester Square is not just an area for dancing but is a community area. When it is not being used by the community it is available for car parking, as no doubt you have noticed. However, the Council is keen that the area is used by suitable outdoor community events and the Council has the authority to clear the area of parked cars. If you wish to consider holding an outdoor event on the community area contact either the Town Clerk or the Community Development Officer at the Civic Centre and either officer will be happy to talk to you about setting up the community area for your event. Competitions for audiences has never been stronger these days with various “Reality “ TV shows and pop idol competitions being preferred by too many to going out and experience live theatre. Nevertheless OLT intend to keep going and we offer the public of Otley(and beyond)the opportunity to enjoy various types of entertainment during our season which includes plays in September and February every year as well as our pantomime in December which is always well supported by local organisations such as brownies and cubs. To close our season we have always had our musical event which in 2006 will be a night at “OLT WMC”- a review of the entertainment to be found in the famous northern clubs over the past decades. This will be presented on three nights between 20 and 22 May at The Civic Centre. We have the full backing of the Town Council. To achieve Fairtrade Town Status Fairtrade goods must be freely available to buy in the town’s shops and cafes and used by a number of work places, churches and community groups.

One year on we are pleased to report that the response we have had from Otley people is encouraging. You may have met us at the last two Victorian Fayres and tasted some Fairtrade Brownies or Fairtrade Hot Chocolate, or sampled some Fairtrade chocolate at our stall in Waitrose during Fairtrade Fortnight. Perhaps you cheered as we passed by, adorned in bananas, at the Carnival or your child took part in a Fairtrade assembly at one of the Primary schools. At all these events people have assured us of their support.

So if you own a café or shop why not sell some Fairtrade goods? The demand is there. We are compiling a directory that will tell people where they can buy Fairtrade Goods so make sure your business doesn’t miss out.

When you purchase Fairtrade goods you know that the producer receives a fair wage, and respect and care for the environment is guaranteed. Producer groups receive a premium on top of their wages that goes towards improving their lives. It may cost us a little more, but what it means to some of the world’s poorest is incalculable. Look out for us at more events in the future and enjoy your Fairtrade goods!
