Learn about the habitats and life cycles of wildlife through hands-on, outdoor exploration along the trails. Step onto the battlefi elds and into the action of the American Civil War at Civil War Weekend. On Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, join the Second New Jersey Brigade at Historic Speedwell in Morristown, and enjoy this unique two-day event that vividly showcases the lives of Civil War soldiers. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, speak to the soldiers about their daily life and how they cooked, dressed, and lived. Watch the training drills, daily mail call, and a staged skirmish each day. Cover your ears as the massive period cannon explodes! Learn how important messages were sent between units using colorful fl ags to send signals. Discover the basics of battlefi eld medicine for soldiers who suffered injuries or disease. Visit the medical area where re-enactors care for the ‘wounded’ and demonstrate how these emergency units ran during battles. Around every corner, there is something to experience. From military uniforms to the economic factors of supply and demand, men and women’s wardrobes were signifi cantly impacted. On Sunday, May 19, interact with models wearing clothing from before, during, and after memorable confl icts in American history at Fashion Wars at the historic mansion at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township. Experience a day in the life of immigrant farm workers and house servants who worked for the Foster family at Workers On the Farm: 1900’s Immigration Experience on Saturday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Fosterfi elds Living Historical Farm in Morris Township. Spend an exciting day, and learn about the ordinary people whose extraordinary American journeys led to their employment at Fosterfi elds farm. Compare the traditions and experiences of immigrant workers from different places, such as Ireland and England, as well as how their life experiences compared to the Fosters. Spend the day as a farm worker, and lend a helping hand with planting, animal care, and other barnyard chores. Roll up your sleeves to weigh eggs, plant seeds in fl ats, and pump water, and learn the process of churning cream into butter. Stop by the Carriage House to assist ‘Andrew Gibbons,’ the coachman, with his chores, and chat with him about his job. Listen to music and performances that celebrate Irish-American culture, and follow the enticing aromas to the Farmhouse kitchen to learn about Irish-American foods. In the cozy Farmhouse parlor, hear stories about the farm family’s journey from England. At 1 p.m., join the ceremony of sharing stories, poems, and music honoring the late-nineteenth and early 20th century immigrants who made signifi cant contributions to the development of Fosterfi elds.
