  • Facts About Nicaragua, “Land of Fire and Water”
Facts about Nicaragua, “Land of Fire and Water” ◦ Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. Its area is about 50,000 square miles, which is close in size to the state of Virginia (Virginia is about 43,000 square miles). ◦The capital of Nicaragua is Managua. ◦ Nicaragua is known as the land of fire and water because it has numerous volcanoes and lakes, as well as two coastlines. ◦There are 19 active and extinct volcanoes on the Pacific side of the country. See web cam images and animations of some of Nicaragua’s volcanoes: http://web- geofisica.ineter.gob.ni/webcam/ Locations of some of Nicaragua’s volcanoes ◦ Spanish is the official language and is spoken by most people in Nicaragua. English and some native languages are spoken on the Caribbean coast. ◦ Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Americas. Most people in the country work hard, but many struggle to have enough to take care of all their basic needs. ◦The school year in Nicaragua is from early February through late November. Because of a limited number of teachers, schools, and resources, the school day is divided into two shifts and all students attend either in the morning or the afternoon. 1 ◦About 4 out of every 10 children in Nicaragua stop attending school by the age of 15, most often because they need to work to help support their families. ◦The country flag has three horizontal stripes: a white stripe in the middle with a blue stripe above and below it. In the center is the national seal, consisting of a triangle which represents equality and justice.

  • Nicaragua Food Security Warning
Nicaragua Food Security Warning The Mesoamerican Food Security Early Warning System (MFEWS) issues periodic warnings when a food crisis is developing, where groups are now, or about to become, highly food insecure and take increasingly irreversible actions that undermine their future food security. Decision makers should urgently address the situations highlighted by this Warning. October 2005 Rat Plague and Excessive Rainfall Causing Crop Losses in Nicaragua Nicaragua currently faces a food security crisis in Waspán, where a rat plague has caused heavy localized crop damage. Though so far the plague has been limited to Waspán, it may also spread into Jinotega. The country is also suffering from excessive rains, resulting in mudslides and minor crop losses which are unlikely to have a major food security impact. SITUATION IN WASPÁN Affected Areas and Livelihood Zones in Nicaragua The Government of Nicaragua has declared a State of Emergency for the municipality of Waspán, located in northeastern Nicaragua in the Autonomous Region of the North Atlantic (RAAN). Rats have caused crop losses of rice and yucca, two of the most important staples in the zone, leaving households in the western part of Waspán acutely food insecure. According to a late August 2005 interagency assessment (joint United Nations and GON), 18 communities in western Waspán are in need of assistance. The 14 most affected communities have lost almost 100 percent of their rice crop and a significant portion of their yucca crop. These communities will require food aid until at least the next harvest which occurs in November and December. Preliminary reports indicate that communities in neighboring San Jose Bocay and Wiwilí have also experienced crop losses.

We tend the relationships.... the projects we do are secondary Spring 2003 to the friendships we build. A Veritable Flood Hits Ometepe from the North! Although there were no official delegations organized by the Association last winter, there was a veritable inundation of visitors from the North that converged on Ometepe last December. In this issue we bring you stories, impressions and memories from these travelers. The visitors included the follow- ing. See page indicated for los cuentos de los viajeros (stories from these travelers): Lisa Giles (page 4) & David Mitchell, and David's sister Betty, (page 4) whom they introduced to Ometepe. Canadians Beth and Paul Ranney and Andy and Betty Gibson (page 5) all from Saltspring Island and active members of the Ometepe Gulf Islands Friendship Association (OGIFA); Andy celebrated his 83rd birthday while there! Diane Jennings (page 6), her sister Elisa (page 7), and their mom Pat who enjoyed a family vacation with Diane as able guide; Kim (page 3) & Ela Esterberg (page 7), returning for the umpteenth time to their beloved sister island family; Kim's sister Wyn (page 2), a nurse at Harrison Hospital, who came with her best friend Kathy Pulicci, also a nurse, and Kathy's husband Jacques. Among other things, Wyn and Kathy spent a few days learning about some medical programs on Ometepe; Martha, Chip and (11-year-old) Addie Jordan. They came down to visit their daughters/sisters (Amy and Anne), who are living with families on Ometepe for ten months. The big event many of us (who just happened to

  • Nicaragua 2017
HI – Federal Information –Nicaragua Country card – 2017 09 EN Nicaragua 2017 MANDATE Since 1997, HI has developed and strengthened the technical skills of partner organisations working in the field of disability in Nicaragua. After working in the country for 15 years, HI decided that the conditions were right to transfer the overall management of the project to its local NGO partner, Visíon Inclusiva, and to phase out its actions in Nicaragua. Visíon Inclusiva has been working in the field of disability since 2011. HI continues to support the organisation’s projects and to strengthen its autonomy. SITUATION Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (125/188 HDI1). This poverty has caused serious health problems - cancer, cardiovascular problems, diabetes and high blood pressure - which are the leading causes of morbidity2 and mortality3 among adults in the country. An estimated 9% of people have diabetes and 25% have high blood pressure. Approximately 52% of people with diabetes also have high blood pressure4, For 2017 the ninth / fourteenth line of action of the Ministry of Health are chronic diseases. INITIAL ACTIONS Since 2004, HI and NGO Visíon Inclusiva (VI) have worked together, in partnership with decentralized structures of the Ministry of Health, clubs for people with diabetes and hypertension, and the “Fe y Esperanza” association of diabetics and hypertensive people (ADHFE)5 in the departments of Estelí and Masaya, where the incidence of disability is particularly high, and where chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and arthritis are extremely high. In 2016 VI has started a new project to prevent diabetes in partnership with two universities in the department of León.
