Annual Report Letter from the Board

No matter who we are or where we come from, we all deserve to have a decent life. We deserve to feel strength and stability. We deserve to know that we have the power to take care of ourselves and build our own futures. At Habitat for Humanity, this is what unites us. Through shelter, we empower. Our shared vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We’re all human. And every single one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future.

1 2 Dear Friends,

Over the last 35 years, Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East continued to build strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. Thanks to your support, we provided nearly 3,000 adults and children with decent, affordable places to live here and around the world. Your donations, your time and your voice turned this vision into a reality. Thank you!

A permanent place to live removes barriers to opportunity, success and health that would otherwise impact a family’s life for generations. We know the effect extends beyond a roof and walls. Success in school, financial independence, promotions at work and improved health are what many Habitat families experience once they move into their homes.

As the average cost of rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Portland climbs to a staggering $1,400 a month, more families are forced to either move, live on the streets, or leave our city. We know our work is far from done. In fact, this fall, a record 300 families applied to participate in our homeownership program. That’s nearly double the number of applications from last year.

Habitat responded to our region’s housing crisis with a new and ambitious five-year strategic plan. The plan calls for doubling the amount we accomplish each year, providing more than 3,000 people with the benefits that come from affordable homeownership. More details on this plan, and how you can get more involved, will be coming very soon.

Everyone deserves a decent place to live, and everyone can do something today to help make that possible for another family. Thank you for stepping up!

Steve Messinetti Dawn Holden President & CEO Chair, Board of Directors

Compton Family

Ruthii, Kaylee, and Kingston moved into their new home in SE Portland this summer. ▶

3 4 Ruthii Compton is a single mother of two—Kaylee, 14 and Kingston, 8—and a Portland native. With a family history marked by substance abuse, Ruthii successfully broke the cycle of addiction and was determined to provide a healthy home for her children to grow and thrive. Despite working full time as an accounting clerk, she simply didn’t make enough to afford a decent place for her family to live.

“I can’t wait to own my own home, freeing up space for other families in need of subsidized housing, and building equity that I can pass down to my children,” Ruthii said last year after being accepted into Habitat’s program.

This July, Ruthii’s family moved into their first home in Southeast Portland. The change she saw was immediate. Kingston has autism, and struggled sharing a small apartment with others. Now, Ruthii says he’s thriving. “Kingston’s behavior has improved, and the nearby park has been an awesome opportunity to practice his skills and do his social homework. He’s actually already made two friends there!”

Kaylee moved to a new school, began taking honors classes, and is trying out for the swim team this winter. “Things she wasn’t showing interest in at her old school she is now being challenged by and succeeding,” explained Ruthii.

The new home has been a blessing for a family who once was living out of a hotel room. “What I love so far is the completeness I feel,” Ruthii said. “Being a homeowner came with new responsibilities and I’m grateful for all the classes I took with Habitat. It really prepared me to be able to transition from renting to owning successfully.”

“What I love more than anything is sitting at my table with a morning devotional and a cup of coffee. I think about how blessed I am to have a forever home,” Ruthii said. “Given the life I lived and the trials and tribulations I’ve endured, I am still standing and fighting the good fight. I’m here. It hardly seems real.”

3 4 Homes Built

With your help, 28 Habitat homes were built in Portland and Gresham. This means another 60 children will grow up in safe, stable homes.

Additionally, our global financial support helped build 48 homes with our sister affiliates in El Salvador and Ethiopia.

The Ortiz family celebrated getting the keys to their first home at Habitat’s Helensview site in Northeast Portland this June.

5 6 Sweat Equity

Future homeowners put in 14,089 hours of sweat equity building their homes and the homes of their future neighbors, working at the ReStore, or taking homeownership education classes.

In other words, that’s the equivalent of 1,761 work days of collective sweat equity.

2,692 volunteers lent a hand on build sites, in our office, or at the Portland ReStore. In total, volunteers contributed 33,800 hours of time in the last year. That’s the equivalent of 16 full-time employees.
