POLICE were called to the city beachfront early yesterday afternoon after a member of the public reported surfers out in the water in violation of the lockdown rules. Three surfers were out in the 1.5m waves when police arrived. The officers were frustrated about the time it took for the three to return to shore after police signalled them to come in. “They totally ignored us for about an hour,” one officer said. “When they finally came ashore we warned them about what would happen next time they were caught out surfing.” The police who attended spoke to several other people who turned up with surfboards on their cars, and reminded them of the lockdown regulations. Under the Covid-19 lockdown rules outlined last weekend, surfing is among a number of activities that have been banned while the lockdown remains in place, because of the risks involved in any potential rescue situation. Not only was the moon closer to the Earth than usual, it was also a full moon. Scientists call this cosmic combination a ‘supermoon’. However, supermoon is not an official astronomical term, but it is the name given when a full moon occurs at the same time as it is at perigee. The moon was 357,042km away at its fullest, making it appear larger and more brilliant in the sky. Scientists said that the moon was 95 percent illuminated. Nasa encouraged stargazers to look skyward, whether it was outside or through a living room window. But scientist Noah Petro of Nasa’s Goddard Space in Maryland said the important thing was to stay safe while moon-gazing during the pandemic. Petro reminded people not to break their bubble when looking skyward, especially if doing so outside. Kiwis did not have the chance to see the moon at its closest last night. Over New Zealand, that will take place at 2.35pm NZT this afternoon. However, Kiwis still had the opportunity to enjoy a bigger and brighter moon than IN ENGLAND: The pink supermoon is seen over Belvoir castle in usual last night. — AP, agencies IN MYANMAR: A view of the pink supermoon in Naypyitaw.
