Assembled over the past forty years, they were selected with great care and an eye for original condition where possible. To this end copies were sought far and wide including from some of the great collections that went to auction in the U.K. and the U.S.A. during this period. The result has been a collection with distinguished provenances and many copies in original boards or parts. We are proud to offer the present selection and believe that it presents a wonderful opportunity to buy outstanding examples of some of the finest illustrated books of the past 200 years. With notices of the hunting, shooting, driving, racing, extravagant exploits, by Nimrod. Ackermann, London, 1835. CLASSIC HUNTING ADVENTURES OF THE HIGH SHERIFF. The very scarce first edition in the original cloth. Brilliant impressions of Henry Alken’s plates. Two of the plates, Blood and the bull-dog and Mytton masters the savage dog, are not found in later editions. Between the years 1805 and 1820 Apperley devoted himself to fox-hunting. From 1813 to 1819 he was the agent for his brother-in-law’s estates and lived at Tŷ Gwyn, Llanbeblig. Around 1821, under the pseudonym of ‘Nimrod,’ Apperley began to contribute a series of articles to The Sporting Magazine that covered horse races, hunt meets and other sporting events. His references to the personalities of the people he knew or met at such events helped to double the circulation of the magazine within a few years. Mr. Pittman, the proprietor of The Sporting Magazine, gave Nimrod a handsome salary and defrayed all the expenses of his tours. He also gave Nimrod a stud of hunters. After Pittman’s death, the proprietors of the magazine sued Apperley for the money that had been advanced. To avoid imprisonment, Apperley moved to Calais in 1830, where he supported himself by writing. Provenance: Herman Le Roy Edgar. Nussbaum, Co-Chair This dissertation examines how late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British novelists—major authors, Laurence Sterne and Jane Austen, and lesser-known writers, Pierce Egan, Charles Jenner, and Alexander Bicknell—challenged Henry Fielding’s mid-eighteenth-century critique of caricature as unrealistic and un-novelistic. In this study, I argue that Sterne, Austen, Egan, and others translated visual tropes of caricature into literary form in order to make their comic writings appear more “realistic.” In doing so, these authors not only bridged the character-caricature divide, but a visual- verbal divide as well. As I demonstrate, the desire to connect caricature with character, and the visual with the verbal, grew out of larger ethical and aesthetic concerns regarding the relationship between laughter, sensibility, and novelistic form. ii This study begins with Fielding’s Joseph Andrews (1742) and its antagonistic stance towards caricature and the laughter it evokes, a laughter that both Fielding and William Hogarth portray as detrimental to the knowledge of character and sensibility. My second chapter looks at how, increasingly, in the late eighteenth century tears and laughter were integrated into the sentimental experience.

NEW DIRECTIONS IN BOOK HISTORY The Rise and Fall of the Victorian Three-Volume Novel Troy J. Bassett [email protected] New Directions in Book History Series Editors Shafquat Towheed Faculty of Arts Open University Milton Keynes, UK Jonathan Rose Department of History Drew University Madison, NJ, USA [email protected] As a vital field of scholarship, book history has now reached a stage of maturity where its early work can be reassessed and built upon. That is the goal of New Directions in Book History. This series will publish mono- graphs in English that employ advanced methods and open up new fron- tiers in research, written by younger, mid-career, and senior scholars. Its scope is global, extending to the Western and non-Western worlds and to all historical periods from antiquity to the twenty-first century, including studies of script, print, and post-print cultures. New Directions in Book History, then, will be broadly inclusive but always in the vanguard. It will experiment with inventive methodologies, explore unexplored archives, debate overlooked issues, challenge prevailing theories, study neglected subjects, and demonstrate the relevance of book history to other academic fields. Every title in this series will address the evolution of the historiog- raphy of the book, and every one will point to new directions in book scholarship. New Directions in Book History will be published in three formats: single-author monographs; edited collections of essays in sin- gle or multiple volumes; and shorter works produced through Palgrave’s e-book (EPUB2) ‘Pivot’ stream. Book proposals should emphasize the innovative aspects of the work, and should be sent to either of the two series editors.

  • The Long Way Home
The Long Way home Compiled By J. L. HERRERA Dedicated to: Marianela, Carolina, Bernie, and all the family. And to the memory of Floridor Ugarte With thanks to: Patrick Herrera, Anthony Raymond, Ethel and Gordon Sewell, Ken Carroll, Ken Herrera, Ellen Gray, and Lise Levaque AND TO THE MEMORY OF: My great-grandmother Caroline Huband-Smith (née Martin) INTRODUCTION When I decided to focus on older and sometimes forgotten authors and books in A Well-Worn Trail I did not at first realise how fascinating some of the snippets I turned up would be. I don’t mean that all these books struck me as great literature or books that should be brought back from the edge of the grave, reprinted, republished, re-promoted as ‘forgotten classics’. No. But they were evocative of time and place. And, hidden in there, were books and ideas and memories which brought considerable enjoyment with them. So after some pondering I decided I would do a similar book, an almost sequel, another wander down memory lane. It would be overstating the case to say I am bringing forgotten writers, forgotten books, back from oblivion but perhaps this, at times, is the case. And talking of books I came upon a mention by P. D. James on how hard it actually is to read in bed. This is true. If you lie on one side your elbow gets tired. If you lie on your back both wrists get tired. If you lie on your tummy both elbows get tired. If you prop yourself up on pillows your top half gets cold.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Viva Voce: Speech and Orality in Eighteenth-Century Literature A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English by Taylor Fontaine Walle 2016 © Copyright by Taylor Fontaine Walle 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Viva Voce: Speech and Orality in Eighteenth-Century Literature by Taylor Fontaine Walle Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Felicity A. Nussbaum, Chair This dissertation traces an alternative history of an understudied and often-maligned eighteenth-century genre: speech. Conventional narratives of the eighteenth century have tended to emphasize the increasing dominance of print, but my project recovers an active interest and confidence in spoken language. Despite a perception in the period that speech was transient, mutable, and vulnerable to corruption, I show that, paradoxically, eighteenth-century authors consistently turn to speech— both as a formal device and a conceptual trope—in order to legitimize their writing. Biographer and compulsive journal-writer James Boswell pursues self-knowledge through transcribed conversation; letter-writing lovers (Swift and Stella, Sterne and Eliza, Thrale Piozzi and Conway) establish intimacy through the trope of the “talking” letter; and female grammarians and lexicographers assert linguistic authority through their mastery of spoken language. These examples demonstrate that questions about the value of speech were at the crux of many pivotal ii eighteenth-century debates, including where to locate the authentic self, how best to standardize the English language, and what kinds of knowledge should matter or “count.” Moreover, these examples point to the role of speech in shaping four quintessential genres of the Enlightenment: the journal, the biography, the letter, and the dictionary or grammar.

‘“Clear the way then…” Surtees Crossing the Country’ Lecture to The R.S. Surtees Society Northern Tour The Bowes Museum 16th March 2014 In his speech at the Society’s Goose and Dumpling Dinner last night, Alistair Martin, our speaker, quoted the key phrase from Surtees’s Hawbuck Grange: “There are two things in this world that there is seldom any mistake about—the smell of a fox and the smell of roast goose.” My own story on the subject of goose, comes from my mother’s contribution, at her cousin’s request, to a cookery book being compiled for sale in aid of the Limerick Hunt, of which her cousin was Joint-master. My mother has beautiful but not easily-read handwriting. Her page in the printed version of the book read “Roast Grouse: this is a dish that can easily feed 10 to 12 people.” This must have much confused the hunting folk of Limerick. Grouse are hardly to be found in Ireland and certainly none that can feed so many. I suddenly realised that the recipe was for roast goose. Ladies and Gentlemen, fellow Surtees devotees, I have a slightly daunting task to deliver. We had our truly delightful day at Hamsterley yesterday, our magnificent Goose and Dumpling Dinner under the perhaps somewhat surprised gaze of the Zurburan saints in that great room in Auckland Castle and a visit to Surtees’s grave this morning. The priest-in-charge at Ebchester Church, preparing for a service was amazed to see us, had never heard of Surtees, had no idea his grave was there but prayed for Surtees’s soul in the service and welcomed our group of Surtees members.
