PARKS AND RECREATION CENTERS Chickasaw State Park Chickasaw State Park consists of 520+ acres, of which several acres are open mature mixed pine-oak woodland. The majority of the Park has been converted into the Turnipseed-Ikenberry Physically Disabled Hunting Area, all of which is on the west side of US-43. Entry into that acreage requires prior registration with the Wildlife Office in Demopolis. Demopolis River Park The Demopolis River Walk is among the most open and accessible birding sites in the state. A paved path along the banks of the , it has planted shrubs and small hardwood trees along its course. There are also several benches and a shelter near the Childers Street parking area. Foscue Creek Park Foscue Creek Park is located at Demopolis, AL on the forested lake shore of Demopolis Lake, the largest lake on the Black Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway. This beautiful park is managed by the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers. It has 54 campsites, all of which are equipped with electric and water hookups, impact pad, picnic table, lantern holder, and fire ring with grill. Mansion Between 1842 and the outbreak of the Civil War, Gaineswood evolved from a two-room cabin surrounded by 1000 acres of cotton into a Greek Revival style mansion. General Nathan Bryan Whitfield, the builder, was his own architect, though he had no formal training. The labor was done mostly by slaves, some of whom were extremely accomplished carpenters and plasterers. Three styles of Greek architecture are represented in the house: Doric-style outside, Ionic for the interior, and Corinthian in the drawing room. Gaineswood contains much of its original furnishings as well as several inventions of the builder. This home is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. The house and grounds are currently operated by the Alabama Historical Commission as a historic house museum. Spillway Falls Park Spillway Falls Park is a significant location for shorebird-watching in the Demopolis area. The site is notable for a broad spillway and extensive shoals and shallows below the lock and dam. Demopolis Botanical Gardens Place or area set aside for recreation or preservation of a cultural or natural resource and under some form of government administration; not including National or State forests or Reserves.
