Society Notice Board

Editor’s Comments: Another longstanding franchise and its well-known marque bites the dust, with GNER to be taken over by National Express Group bringing back Cl.90s+MkIIIs. It’s good that NEG is to recover a major franchise and let’s hope they do well and keep prices competitive…especially for my finances !! As can be seen in Stock Changes, another operator will hopefully be up and running in September, namely Grand Central, so it will not be long before the ECML will see a host of new liveries and increased numbers of loco hauled trains and HSTs…they can’t keep ‘em down. A packed Sep issue sees the start of two new series. Behind the Nameplate, by Keith White, is a look at the origins of named locos. Hopefully this will prove interesting to members. Railway Globetrotters is an occasional series where members report on their railway journeys / experiences around the world. There are no Wagon or Reports this month, due to Martin enjoying a well earned holiday. Also due to a shortage of space…too much material, not enough pages…Where in the …? has been held over, but the answer to last months’ mystery location was Stockton-on-Tees Station…yes you were right Jeff. With the ECML very much to the fore in current news, this month’s Location ‘Spot’light focuses on the variety to be found at Peterborough Station. This feature is proving to be popular and as can be seen below, a reason to join the Society. Thank you Brian…and yes the series will continue and develop bringing up-to-date spotting info on the current railway scene. For new members and for reference, here is a list of locations previously covered with the relevant magazine issues:

Jan 07: Nuneaton Station, Mar 07: Carlisle incl. Station, DRS Kingmoor TMD and Kingmoor Yard May 07: Water Orton Station, Jul 07: Peak Forest Sidings, Aug 07: Ayr TMD and Falkland Yard

Readers Letters:

Dear Editor,

I recently purchased a copy of your brilliant Inter City Railway Society Magazine and found it to be a very interesting and a very enjoyable read. I was especially interested in your feature - Location ‘Spot’ light. You can buy aircraft books on the best places for spotting, but nothing for railway spotters, that’s what made your magazine article so interesting - I have never seen a railway magazine give such information for railway enthusiasts. I was so impressed that I immediately telephoned the Membership Department and joined the society straight away. If I might inquire - might this be a regular feature in the future ? Thanks again for an excellent magazine.

Regards,

Brian Emery, Chelmsford, Membership No. 085835

Magazine: Any information / article on any railway related item will always be most welcome for inclusion in part or as a whole in the magazine. Your travel stories / anecdotes about far flung parts of the railway network, past or present can give pleasure to others or inform of places to visit. This railway hobby of ours is made all that more enjoyable by the sharing of information, so please consider sharing your knowledge and experiences. Please note that contributions for Out and About Sightings only should be sent to James Holloway, items for European News (and Sightings) to Robert Brown and for Wagon Corner and Light Rail & Metro News to Martin Hall. All other items should be sent to Trevor Roots / Peter Britcliffe. (All addresses are on Page 2) Neatly typed submissions are perfectly acceptable, but if you have a PC with Microsoft Word or Excel, then a document on CD is a bonus, or better still e-mail them to the appropriate official. Good quality photographs are always welcome for inclusion in the magazine – colour or black and white clear prints of any railway subject will be considered but preferably digital photographs via e-mail. To credit members correctly please include your name with any submissions. Some items may be placed on our excellent website if we have insufficient space in the magazine.

3 Deadline for Articles to Editor: Friday 28th September 2007. Items for Out and About Sightings should be sent in to James a few days earlier if possible please.

Errata: Unfortunately due to a character recognition printing problem, four mileage figures are missing from the Depot Directory feature on Ayr & Falkland Yard. They should be 3/4 1/2 1/2 & 1/2 on pages 11, 12, 13 & 14 respectively. Similarly I hadn’t noticed this problem before and have now spotted that 3 figures are also missing from the Location ‘Spot’Light on Peak Forest, they being 1/2, 1/2, & 1 1/2 on page 12 in the July issue.

Membership Matters: Membership Rates: Annual: £15.00 Five Year Rate: £70.00 (discounted during 2007)

New Members: The following new members have joined this month: Shaun Dobson, Brian Emery, Alan Hayward, Gerald Smith, Chris Waring, A. J. Winslow - A warm welcome to you all.

Flood Damage on the SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY: (by Stephen Skewes) As most people know, a sudden cloudburst on the evening of Tuesday 19th June 2007, and another heavy rainstorm on Friday 20th July, did quite unprecedented damage to the Severn Valley Railway in many places. Very fortunately, no-one was hurt in any of these incidents, although some holiday homes were made uninhabitable. In two places near Highley, half-way along the line, the embankment was washed away leaving lengths of track hanging in the air, and a signal-post was also torn down. These scenes appeared on "Midlands Today1. At Victoria Bridge, an earth abutment was scoured out by a raging torrent flowing along the line out of the cutting, having already deposited mud and debris half-way across the bridge. This, and similar damage elsewhere, has closed the railway to nearly all services for months to come. Perhaps the biggest headache of all, identified only later, is the threat of a major landslip near Northwood Halt: the hillside is slowly sliding down towards the river. The alarm was raised late on 19th June, and the SVR's management reacted at once; outside consultants and contractors were soon brought in to advise and begin repairs, and substantial funds, notably from Advantage West Midlands and the European Regional Development Fund, have been made available, partly because the local economies depend on the railway. In addition, the SVR's own Flood Appeal now (mid-August) stands at over £300,000. However, all these efforts may still fall short of the final cost of reinstatement, currently estimated at £2m - £3m. It is fortunate that the SVR has always maintained two MPDs, at either end of the line, leaving enough and coaches to work the southernmost stretch between Kidderminster and Bewdley, where trains are still running every day. One carriage-set is marooned at Bridgnorth for the time being. Most of the remaining gala events in the SVR's 2007 calendar will still take place but are being reorganised for Kidderminster and Bewdley. It is hoped that services over the full length of the line will recommence early in the New Year; SVR's volunteers (and our accountant !) look forward eagerly to this great day. Progress on the railway is reported almost daily on the SVR's website (www.svr.co.uk and associated links). Relevant articles and pictures have appeared in Steam Railway (issues 338 & 339), Heritage Railway (issues 101 & 102), Railway Magazine (Sep) and The Rail Engineer No. XXX (August 2007)

Behind the Nameplate by Keith White

37188: ‘Jimmy Shand’ (named: 10 May 1985 – May 1989)

The Person: Jimmy Shand was born in East Wemyss in Fife on 28th January 1908, the 6th of 9 children born to Erskine and Mary Shand. His father Erskine was a skilled Melodeon player and young Jimmy soon picked up his fathers musical talents, playing both the mouth organ and the fiddle. He left school at the age of 14 and began working in the mining industry, which he left after the general strike of 1926. After 6 years of doing various jobs, a friend told Jimmy to try an accordion that they were looking at in a shop window, Jimmy walked in, strapped the accordion on and began to play, the owner of the store heard Jimmy play and offered him a job as a travelling salesman. In the early 30’s, Jimmy had an audition with the BBC as an accordion player, however he failed this because he kept time with his foot. Two years later he had his first success when his made a couple of solo records for the Beltona record label. The war then intervened, but Jimmy was turned down for the RAF due to a digestive disorder, so he spent the war years in the fire service, it was during these years that he form his band. Jimmy Shand and band were first broadcast on radio on New Years Day in 1945, this was the first of many such broadcast’s and television appearances. After this first broadcast, Jimmy became a full time musician playing all over the country. The airplay he was getting got him noticed, and before long EMI signed Jimmy and the band. In the mid 50’s the band were releasing one single a month, and touring all over the world. In 1955 Jimmy had his biggest hit, ‘The Bluebell Polka’, this was produced by George Martin, who later went on to work with The Beatles.

11 In 1959 Jimmy was voted the most popular accordionist in Great Britain, and in 1962 he was awarded an MBE, later that same year, he appeared on Top of the Pops. He carried on touring until the early 70’s when he had a bout of ill health and went into semi-retirement. He was made a freeman of his adopted home, Auchtermuchty in 1974, then North East Fife in 1980, and then Fife in 1998. In between these awards, he found himself being surprised by Eamonn Andrews and his famous red book for This Is Your Life in 1978, and was a regular performer on the annual Hogmanay show, as well as performing for the Queen and the Queen Mother at both Balmoral and Windsor castles. In 1999, he became Sir James Shand, Prince Charles doing the honours at the Place of Holyroodhouse. Sir Jimmy passed away 2 days before Christmas 2000 after a 5 week illness with pneumonia. A statue of him stands in his adopted home town of Auchtermuchty and there is a portrait of him in the national portrait gallery in Edinburgh.

The : 37188 started life as D6888, works number EE/RSH3366/8409 1963. On 16th January 1964, D6888 was released from Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns and allocated to Landore depot in Swansea. There, D6888 lead a fairly quiet life, the first big change occurring in April 1974 when the loco was renumbered under the TOPS scheme to 37188. The loco was a regular performer on passenger trains from Swansea to the west of Wales. A slight change of scenery occurred on 22nd November 1981, when the loco was transferred to Bristol Bath Road depot, mainly for freight use, so the boiler was isolated soon after. Less than 5 months later, the 4th April saw 37188 heading for the colder climate of Eastfield depot and back onto passenger trains, therefore the loco’s boiler was reinstated. The next big event in the loco’s life was it’s naming at Oban on the 10th May 1985, by Jimmy Shand himself. Later the same year, the loco was transferred to Motherwell, however a month later it went back to being an Eastfield engine. When locomotive pools came into being in January 1989, 37188 was allocated to the FPGE pool - Freight Petroleum & Chemicals. As it was no longer a passenger loco, it’s nameplate was removed in May of that year. June 1992 brought a change of depot, Immingham and loco pool FPAG - Trainload Petroleum. 37188 obviously didn’t like it ‘down south’, as at the start of 1993 Inverness depot become it’s new home, allocated to pool RAJV pool - Regional Railways ScotRail. Another transfer to Motherwell came in October 1993, allocated firstly to FCPM - Trainload Coal then to LGBM - Trainload Freight West. Here the loco stayed for 16 months until February 1995 when the loco became a Crewe engine, then 3 months later a Bescot engine allocated to LBLB - Transrail.

The end for 37188 came on April Fool’s day 1996, when the locomotive was refused an exam on grounds of cost of repairs, and was placed into store, unserviceable. Officially withdrawn on 30th July 1999 at Carnforth. This however wasn’t the end of 37188, in August 2003 the loco was bought for preservation and moved to it’s new home at Peak Rail in February 2006, where the loco can be seen undergoing a return to running order, hopefully one day to be reunited with ‘Jimmy Shand’ nameplates?

In between the back of platform 3 and platform 4 are a further two running line for fast through ECML services. To the extreme west of the station beyond platform 5 are two freight loop lines. Stabling: Apart from the passenger bay platform 1, freight trains often stable in the loop lines.

Passenger Traffic: GNER is the main operator on the ECML with an intensive service of through and stopping trains using Cl.91+Mk IV coaches and HSTs. These operate from London King’s Cross, about 86 miles to the south, through to Leeds and all points north on the ECML and beyond into Scotland to Glasgow Central, Aberdeen & Inverness. The other long distance operator is Central Trains, which uses Cl.158, 170/1 and 170/5 DMUs plus 153 single car DMUs on the local infrequent Spalding line services. First Capital Connect operates a half hourly ECML service to and from King’s Cross, with Cl.317 and 365 EMUs. One Railway operates a 2 hourly service via the March line to Ipswich / London Liverpool Street, with Cl.170/2 DMUs. The other operator is Hull Trains, which does not stop, on a dedicated 2 hourly service from Hull to London King’s Cross using four Cl.222 DEMUs (currently one is out of use damaged) A new dedicated operator, Grand Central, will start in Sep 2007 a limited service from Sunderland to King’s Cross using three HSTs. With franchises due to change hands in November 2007, this will see GNER and Central Trains disappear and introduce new operators and liveries.

Freight Traffic: There is quite a frequent flow of freight traffic from EWS, Freightliner and particularly GBRf, whose depot is nearby. Locos to be seen are predominantly Cl.66. Most freight traffic runs through the loop lines to the west of platform 5, though platform 4 is also used.

16

GBRf 66720 ‘Metronet Pathfinder’ heading north from freight loop lines to west of platform 5, Peterborough, 12 June 2007

Best Spotting / Photography Sites: As most of the freight traffic runs to the west of the station, platform 4 / 5 is best, though at the northern end it is difficult to get the Capital connect services or anything in platform 1. Good interesting uncluttered shots can be taken from both ends of the station. Being north / south, photography is good, but in sunny weather, time of day will dictate the shot. For reference the accompanying photos were between 14.00-18.00, so it was already too late for decent west facing shots, particularly of freight on the loop lines (as seen above and below on this page). Platform 3 would also be good in the morning for west facing photos. The northern end of platform 4 / 5 is also the place to attempt to view locos on the EWS stabling point…with binoculars.

Facilities: The usual platform buffet facilities, with many more shops in the nearby town centre.

Railway Cuttings

Michael Hillier’s Railway Cuttings: Residents are fighting plans for a £16m railway signalling centre to be built behind their gardens. Network Rail has unveiled details of the proposed regional centre for South Wales, off Minion Park Road. It claims centralising its signallers in one hi-tech 24-hour headquarters will improve safety and reliability for passengers across the region. But the plan to locate the two-storey, partly-glass centre on the site of a disused milk depot on railway land which does not require planning permission - has angered some residents of Minion Park Road. Local councillor Mohammed Islam said: "Most of the complaints I have had are from residents who are concerned about having a 90-space car park in use 24 hours a day behind their houses. They already have busy Ninian Park Road on one side of them." One resident who rang a local paper said: "It's a disgrace what they’re doing". The plans were publicly revealed by Network Rail yesterday at an event organised for residents. The derelict former milk depot is being demolished and Network Rail plans to start building work later his year and to finish by November or December 2008. Control staff and signallers will then start a phased move into the building, beginning with Newport's signal boxes in 2009 and ending with Port Talbot's in 2025. Ultimately, it will be staffed by 60 people, working in shifts. Project designer Darren Dykstra said that the development would benefit residents in terms of safety and appearance. He said: "There have been complaints from residents about youngsters running amok on the site and regular fly-tipping. We have made clear that this site will have 24-hour security. And we have already cleared 15 tons of fly-tipped rubbish." Andy Bateman, senior project manager for Network Rail, said the project was one of the first to Britain as part of a modernisation of the network that is being carried out across the UK.

NEW YORK: (by Jeff Hall) New York as we recognise it, is essentially the island of Manahattan, which is situated on the Hudson River. Manhattan local services are provided by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA) Railroad providing services from Grand Central Terminal out to Poughkeepsie, Wassaic, New Canaan, Danbury, Waterbury and New Haven. Grand Central Terminal is situated on 42nd Street / Park Avenue. InterCity services, as we know them, are provided by Amtrak at Penn Station. Services run to all parts of the USA and Canada. New Jersey Transit also provides services from Penn Station to New Jersey with all services passing through Secausus Junction. Penn Station is situated on 34th Street / 7th Avenue adjacent to Madison Square Garden. The Subway System for New York is provided by MTA covering the five boroughs of Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island though the latter is not connected to the mainland. Due to the heightened security, photography of trains is impossible on Manhattan, though a trip out to Secausus Junction (adjacent to Newark Airport) could be rewarding for Amtrak and New Jersey Transit services, whilst all services out of Grand Central will pass through Harlem 125th Street. John F Kennedy and Newark Airports both operate AirTrain systems similar to the one at Gatwick.

Germany The 16th saw a ‘lokzug’ of 6 class 181 electrics from Frankfurt to Dessau works the formation was 181208 (zuglok) + 181210+181223+181212+181221+181207. 3 are to be overhauled for DB Fernverkehr, the other 3 will be stripped and then scrapped, I have no information on the fate of each individual lok, but find it rather bizarre that 181225 should be left behind in Frankfurt. As a matter of interest 181212 had a bit of frazzle when changing over at Wasserbillig on the 1st of this month. Action fro the 17th included 101018 on the 07:18 Passau to Hamburg Altona, 101086 powering the 07:32 Hamburg Altona to Wien, 101145 leading the 09:37 Stuttgart to Hamburg Altona, 110434 powering the 16:32 Wiesbaden Hbf to Frankfurt (Main) Hbf, 146243 with the 18:01 Hanau to Frankfurt (Main) Hbf and 181218 topping the 18:46 Frankfurt (Main) Hbf to Saarbrucken Hbf. The following day 218156 was out on the 08:12 Ulm to Neustadt and 218164 worked the same route heading the 18:12 Ulm to Neustadt. The 19th now 218136 did the 05:02 Koblenz to Emmelshausen, 218217 plied it’s trade on the 09:59 Trier to Koln Deutz, 218216 headed in the opposite direction on the 11:09 Koln Deutz to Trier, 218128 appeared on the 11:13 Gerolstein to Trier and 218206 was seen on the 11:59 Trier to Koln Deutz Class 103 Noted out on the 1st was 103184 which worked the Köln to Oberhausen section of Dampflok-Tradition Oberhausen´s Sonderzug to the Vivat Viaduct festival in Altenbeken.

Note a fair proportion of the June transfers havn't occurred. I don't if they have been postponed or cancelled, but this bureaucratic mess is symptomatic of SNCF. 19 Our contacts at CP have confirmed that the long withdrawn CP class 1800 (English Electric) locomotives, last used in 2001, have been sold to Argentina! It is not clear yet how many are going to be restored to use. Seems crazy to me considering the condition they are in and the fact that large numbers of serviceable 1400s are available! A huge sum of money will be needed to restore each one.

Austria Eurail Press are reporting that the OBB 1216's have finally been granted Italian approval to operate Sud Tirol Korridor trains (Innsbruck to Lienz) thereby leaving the remaining 1822's with no diagrammed work.
