OVERVIEW OF Students @ Work Internship Program Students @ Work Internships are paid at minimum-wage and structured to last 10 to 12 weeks. Tentative program dates are January 30th – April 20th. Course Credit is available. Resume and Cover Letter are required. Students should have a strong academic record (3.0 strongly preferred). Students must have completed their sophomore year in college prior to the start of the internship. In addition, students may not have graduated college or graduate school prior to the start of the internship (i.e. STUDENTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN SCHOOL DURING THE TIME OF THIS INTERNSHIP). Students seeking college credit are strongly encouraged to apply.

Note to International Students: All international students will be required to provide documentation of proper visa paperwork prior to your arrival if accepted to the program. John King USA is anchor of CNN's 6 p.m. ET program, John King, USA, and CNN's Chief National Correspondent. Interns will learn how Team King plans stories and executes package production and lives. Interns will shadow and assist producers working with John King. They will also receive assistance from the Team if they would like to work on a story of their own. Intern duties include research, fact-checking, tapes logging, assistance with interviews and participation at press events. Interns should come away with sharper editorial and writing skills, exposure to leading technology and an increased knowledge of the U.S. government and political system.

Newsgathering Interns will learn how CNN plans stories and orchestrates live breaking news coverage and daily programming. Interns will shadow and assist coverage managers, assignment editors, beat leaders, producers, live producers, photojournalists and news assistants. Intern duties include research, fact- checking, tapes logging, assistance with interviews and participation at press events. Interns should come away with sharper editorial and writing skills, exposure to leading technology and increased knowledge of the U.S. government and political system.

Newsource Internships with CNN Newsource involve supporting the production teams’ efforts in providing live and pre-produced news content to more than 800 CNN-affiliated clients in North America. Duties include, but are not limited to assisting producers and news managers gather elements for broadcast, taping/logging news and political events as they happen, as well as assisting with sales and service logistics for the Newsource DC Production business. In addition, interns support the operation by fielding phone call requests from news clients and helping plan, produce and execute on and off-site live broadcasts.

Political Unit As a Political Unit intern, students will have the opportunity to gain insight into the U.S. political system and CNN's editorial process. They will learn how to compile research for DC based programming as well as; presidential, gubernatorial, senate, and congressional elections through CNN's Political Unit contacts and the internet. They will be able to strengthen their research skills, contribute to, and attend meetings for DC based shows; as well as editorial futures. In the field, interns have the opportunity to accompany Producers to political events. In production, interns learn how to set up a script with tape and write using CNN's database. Interns will also learn how to use CNN's tape database to locate tapes for packages and sound bites for air. Candidates should be seeking a career in politics and/or journalism.

They strengthen their research and publicity skills while contributing to the network's media relations and occasionally participating in staff and planning meetings. Interns may have the opportunity to accompany publicists to Public Relations (PR) events, interviews, etc. Interns will learn how to compile media contact lists, search for press clips, craft and implement pitches, and support publicists in day-to- day publicity efforts with Washington programming, both proactively and reactively. Interns may learn how to use LexisNexis, media editing programs to check transcripts and assist in basic administrative tasks. Intern’s schedules vary and may include weekend and evening work, depending on breaking news. Interns have the opportunity to participate in how publicity ideas are developed, how pitches are designed and implemented, the pitch- and release-writing process, and how publicity is built from a strategic network perspective. Assist Washington publicists and support overall efforts of entire CNN PR department, including New York and Atlanta. The DC PR office is heavily focused on the political climate and upcoming special political programming. Candidates should also have a good understanding of the political process.

The Situation Room The Situation Room, anchored by , assembles top CNN correspondents, analysts, contributors and guests for complete, up-to-the minute coverage of the day's events. Modeled on the concept of the White House Situation Room, the program combines traditional reporting methods with the newest innovative online resources, making the entire process of newsgathering more transparent and placing the latest news and information at the viewers' fingertips. The Situation Room airs weekdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Students may have the opportunity to learn and observe a number of functions within the department, such as show research, videotape screening, logging, dubbing and other show production needs. Interns need to be available during the week for this internship. In order to facilitate the learning experience, the following qualifications are preferred. Candidates should be seeking a career in broadcast journalism, should be self- motivated, able to multitask, have a good attitude, and be able to function well in an environment with short deadlines and quick turnaround projects.

Special Investigations & Documentaries CNN Special Investigations and Documentaries is CNN's Peabody and Emmy award-winning investigative and documentary unit. This intern will shadow and observe the unit’s producers, video editor and managing editor in the Washington Bureau. The intern will learn how to conduct research, assist in production, and develop stories for long-form documentaries and short-form investigative pieces. The intern will also assist with video and photo research and whenever possible accompany producers on shoots in the field in the Washington area. Reporting experience and basic production skills are helpful.

Interns will learn how Team Crowley plans stories and executes package production and lives. Interns will shadow and assist producers working with Crowley. They will also receive assistance from the Team if they would like to work on a story of their own. Interns should come away with sharper editorial and writing skills, exposure to leading technology and an increased knowledge of the U.S. government and political system. Interns will also be involved in CNN's media program, "Reliable Sources" with Howard Kurtz.
