What is Jump Canada? Jump Canada is the committee of Equine Canada that is responsible for all hunter, hunter equitation and jumper activities in Canada from the grass roots to the international level. Jump Canada is governed by a board of directors, the majority of whom are elected by the stakeholders in the sport. There are 18 board members and 14 sub-committees that are responsible for the operation of Jump Canada with the support of technical manager Gill Perkins, who works from the Equine Canada offi ces in Ottawa. A complete outline of the Jump Canada structure and responsibilities can be found on our website www.jumpcanada.ca.

CORE OBJECTIVES 1. To develop, build and grow Canada’s hunter/jumper community at all levels. 2. To improve the effectiveness of communications to internal and external audiences. 3. To promote rider and horse development at an international level. 4. To administer and manage the Jump Canada organization. 5. To improve and increase funding and sponsorship base.

Since its inauguration in 1998, Jump Canada has initiated important national programs, fostered grass roots development within the provinces, fi elded successful teams at World Championships, and , and maintained fi nancial responsibility.

Owners are particularly important to the success of show jumping in Canada. Through their support of the athletes and ownership of their horses, owners make it possible for Canada to fi eld competitive teams in international events. Their support is paramount to Canada’s success and, each year, Jump Canada presents the Owner of the Year Award in recognition of their invaluable contribution to the sport.

Jump Canada has created a number of other programs and awards in order to recognize contributions to the sport and to provide support for participants. The following are the Jump Canada programs developed to date. The complete criteria for each program can be found on the Jump Canada website.

• ‘ProChaps’ Athlete of the Month • Sponsor of the Year • Jump Canada Bursary • Talent Squad Series • Jump Canada Series • Travel Assistance • Offi cial of the Year • Venue Development Fund • Offi cials’ Accessibility Fund • Volunteer of the Year • Owner of the Year • Young Horse Development

The Jump Canada levy allows us to support these national programs. In addition, a portion of the levy is distributed to each Provincial Hunter Jumper Association to be used for grassroots development. Jump Canada Board Members Jump Canada Chair, Elizabeth Bordeaux

Laurie Bucci’s riding career began in 1979 with lessons in Blainville, Quebec. Following a successful hunter career, Laurie made the switch to jumpers and, riding Pauly, won the World Junior Final held in conjunction with the 1989 World Cup Final in Tampa, Florida, and the Individual Gold Medal at the 1989 North American Young Riders’ Championship. Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown: Memphis, Tennessee August 23, 1952 King, Ontario

A steady performer at the international level for more than 30 years, Mac Cone is the only athlete to have competed on both the United States and Canadian Equestrian Teams. Following early beginnings that saw him train under the legendary Bert de Nemethy and win Nations’ Cup events for the United States, the Memphis native moved north in 1979 to marry Canadian Brenley Carpenter. Riding the Hannoverian stallion, Elute, Mac won the 1996 Olympic Selection Trials and, in his Olympic debut in Atlanta, was the highest-placed Canadian rider. It was a feat he would repeat at the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain, riding Cocu. Among his current grand prix string is Melinda, the grey mare that was named the Leading Canadian Horse while Mac was named the Leading Canadian Rider at the 2004 Royal Horse Show in Toronto. He is also concentrating on the development of Ole and Rock Star, both Dutch Warmblood geldings. In addition to his skills as a rider, Mac is deservedly recognized for his coaching abilities having trained 1986 World Champion Gail Greenough. He counts 2003 Pan American Games contender, Mark Samuel, and 2002 World Equestrian Games teammate, Melissa Brown among his current clients at Southern Ways Stable. The 2000 and 2003 Canadian Show Jumping Champion has represented Canada the past three consecutive World Equestrian Games in 1994, 1998 and 2002. One of Canada’s leading money earners, Eric’s 2006 season got off to a strong start with several horses, including Stacey Krembil’s up-and-coming stallion, Ramiville, enjoying top fi nishes on the highly competitive Palm Beach circuit. Riding Hickstead, Eric won the Wellington Nations’ Cup for Canada following an exciting, sudden-death jump-off against the United States. Expected to make his fourth consecutive World Equestrian Games appearance in Aachen, Germany, Eric and Hickstead got an early start by placing third in the 300,000 Euro Grand Prix of Aachen in June.

Eric operates Torrey Pines Stables in Schomberg, Ontario, where he coaches many promising show jumping competitors. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis and squash. Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown: Kamloops, British Columbia December 1, 1972 Strathmore, Alberta

Growing up on a ranch in Kamloops, BC, Tamie Phillips started taking formal jumping lessons at the age of nine and, after successfully showing as a teenager, she turned professional on her 18th birthday. Her fi rst taste of national success came when she qualifi ed for the National Talent Squad Finals at the Royal Horse Show in Toronto in the mid- 90’s. Although successful, she returned to BC horseless, having sold her mount. In 2004, Tamie moved to Strathmore, Alberta, where she operates Caragana Show Jumpers, a 93-acre training facility with an 18-stall barn. A fabulous 2005 season at Spruce Meadows saw Tamie and Starlet win the Chrysler Leading Canadian Rider Award, earning Tamie a brand-new Chrysler vehicle. Meanwhile, riding Lucas, Tamie won the $35,000 Kubota Cup Grand Prix at the Edmonton Northlands Horse Show and was crowned the 2005 Western Canada Kubota Cup Champion. Based on these remarkable achievements, Tamie was named to the Canadian Show Jumping Team Short List for the fi rst time. Horses are a way of life for Phillips and her family. Her mother, Merle Gardner, and her younger sister, Shawna Phillips, operate a horse business in Williams Lake, BC. Tamie and her mother bred both Lucas and Starlet, promising indications of what their small breeding program is capable of producing. Horses Horses

20 - Jump Canada, 2006 Jump Canada, 2006 - 21 Chris Pratt

Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown: Toronto, Ontario April 18, 1969 Belfountain, Ontario

For Chris Pratt, it all began with four goats. After spending his fi rst ten years in the city, Chris moved to a farm north of Toronto. There were sheep, chickens, goats - everything but horses. Tired of hearing Chris ask for a pony, his father fi nally relented, trading four goats for what would become a lifelong commitment for Chris.

The fi rst sign that Chris was destined for greatness came in 1994 when he topped the Kanatek Talent Squad and also received a Firestone Development Scholarship. After enjoying grand prix success with Davos in the 1990’s, Chris began riding for Susan Grange’s Lothlorien Farm in 2002, a move that saw his grand prix career skyrocket.

Over the past fi ve seasons, Chris has racked up impressive victories including last fall’s $100,000 Grand Prix at the CSI-W Tournament of Champions. The wave of success earned him a place on the Canadian Nations’ Cup Team at the 2005 Spruce Meadows “Masters” Tournament. As inclement weather pre-empted the proceedings, it was not until 2006 in Wellington, FL, that Chris made his ‘offi cial’ Nations’ Cup debut, and what a debut it was! Riding Mustique, Chris contributed the perfect score of two clear rounds, helping Canada to secure an important victory!

When not riding, Chris can often be found on the golf course. Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown: Guelph, Ontario September 5, 1962 Schomberg, Ontario

As a teenager, Underhill earned top honours from the Royal Conservatory for her singing, but it was her love of horses that won out. First named to the Canadian Equestrian Team in 1990, Beth has ridden in over 25 Nations’ Cup competitions and, in 1993, was the fi rst woman to win the Canadian World Cup League, a feat she repeated in 1999. With her retired partner, Monopoly, Beth earned more than $1 million in the show ring.

A veteran of Pan American, Olympic and World Equestrian Games, Beth has claimed the Canadian Show Jumping Championship title on three occasions - in 1994 and 1996 with Monopoly and in 1999 with Altair. Having represented Canada at the 1998 World Equestrian Games in Rome, Italy, Beth and Altair were then Team Bronze Medallists at the 1999 Pan American Games. The same year, they fi nished second in the richest show jumping event in the world, the $800,000 du Maurier International, held at the CSIO Spruce Meadows “Masters” tournament where Beth was also named the Leading Lady Rider.
