However, after the slump in oil prices in 2016, the Qatari government identified diversified industries with growth potential. Tourism sits within this group due to the considerable investment in construction and infrastructures, largely driven by events such as the FIFA Football World Cup. This rate of growth has declined over the last 10 years. Whilst the arrival of COVID-19 worldwide will compound this trend in the short term, the economy is expected to have a boost in the services sector driven by the FIFA Football World Cup in 2022.
