2 Krupa Nidhan Shepherd’s Message The blessed season of Holy Lent is upon us. During the morning prayer of Monday in this Lenton season, we pray, ‘the wings of the holy lent raises us to the Almighty.’ This prayer directs us to the prime motive of the holy season of fast and abstinence. The material as well as spiritual practices that we undertake in this liturgical season, gives us wings to fly high and rise close to our Lord and God. Thus, continue to stay in union with Him.

With prayer, fasting and deeds according to the will of the Lord, we must raise ourselves so that, as St. Paul teaches us, we may be able to “set our minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:2). This will lead us to the ultimate things that is to gain Lord Jesus and give Him to all. And what else is better a way, than to give Jesus through direct evangelisation. Our diocese is blessed with plentiful opportunities to involve directly in mission work. I beckon all my dear faithful in the Diocese to rise up and make time to visit our missions. This holy season is the right time.

Let your fasting be a means for many to know that we have a loving Lord and an everlasting home above. Not just through your lenton contributions but also through your person, be present to the people who need Jesus our Lord. May our observance of lent become wings for us to fly high to our Lord.

Wishing you all the blessings of the Great Lent!

May God bless you all,

 Jacob Mar Barnabas Bishop of Gurgaon

31 Krupa Nidhan Mision Desk

Glory to the Holy name of our Lord, Greetings, We are in the season of the Great Fast. It is indeed a great season of divine grace and spiritual growth for the mission. The season of great fast directly puts us in touch with the core belief of the mission; the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ deliver every human from the clutches of sin and give them the power to become the children of God (Jn 1:12). It is indeed a great season; during which every believer discovers and deepens the great Punaraikyam that is made available to everyone through glorious mystery of the Holy Cross. In this great season we renew and declare with the great missionary Apostle Paul, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel” (Rom 1:16). Apostle exhorts the young missionary Timothy, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth” (2 Tim 2: 15). The season of great fast provides ample opportunity to every missionary to nurture and increase the faith of everyone who is in Christ Jesus. The atmosphere of Punaraikyam is at its best in this season. It provides an atmosphere to deepen the salvific correction through the reconciliation with God, community and one another. Every missionary in the mission field and all the pastors of the soul with great zeal and enthusiasm take all the necessary steps in their capacity to make this season a great experience of Punaraikyam. How does the Punaraikyam of take place? There are different approaches. One that we see in the Acts of the Apostle is the simplest and is missionary in its approach (Acts 2:37-42). It has four steps, firstly, creates an atmosphere where the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus is explained, the retreats, conventions, Catholic yogams, small or big is held. The proclamation of truth naturally brings in the heart of the listeners the question, ‘what should we do’. “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles, “Brothers, 32 Krupa Nidhan what should we do?” (Acts 2: 37). This gives the missionary an opportunity to answer and lead the faithful to Metanoia, true repentance. Apostle Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). This is the second step. This true repentance leads them to the third step, experience the communion, Punaraikyam. They are reconciled to God and community. The result was all of us to see. “So those who welcomed his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons were added" (Acts 2:41). They became a community, the fourth step. They are not an organization but all the elements of the worshiping community are emerged. "They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers’’ (Acts 2: 42).

We can call it as a SMCC catechetical missionary step: Study, Metanoia, Communion and Community. The spirit of mission comes when we are aware and learn of the mysteries of our salvation. All of us are called to remind and teach the core of our faith with great vigor and enthusiasm. We see the SMCC steps are at work in the founding years of our Church. There was great enthusiasm to Study and learn about true faith. Such listening and study lead to great Metanoia among the people which led the people to take redemptive correction and experience Punaraikyam and perfect their call and election. The Communion, Punaraikyam, lead them to become a great worshiping Community, rooted in the teachings of the apostles, fellowship, breaking of the bread and prayers. Mission is not only initiating the proclamation of Good News but also nurturing and deepening as they grow in learning, metanoia, communion and community living. When the foundational years were over, Servant of God Mar Ivanios knowing the great need of this nurturing dimension gave

33 Krupa Nidhan great emphasis to catechetical faith formation and reminded everyone who is involved in this to be vigilant and faithful to carry out their sacred responsibility. Pastoral letter of Servant of God Mar Ivanios in the year 1942 explains the need for the catechetical faith formation of our faithful. (Full text, Jagaruganaya Ajapalakan, ed. Fr. Prabish George, no. 17). I quote two paragraphs from it. “We cannot expect to harvest from a field where seeds are not sworn, in the same way, we cannot expect the believers to lead a God-fearing, morally mature life where proper catechetical activities are not carried out. If we perceive that faith in God is diminished, jealousy and indiscipline are on the rise then the reason is that priests, parishes and catechism teachers are turned away from their duties or do it for the name sake”. He further says, “Every human is born with intellect and capacity to understand. Still, if they are deprived of proper formation to nurture their God given faculties then proper growth cannot be achieved. In the same way, the Christians who are born again through the baptism receives the seeds of faith, in order to make it grow and to bear fruit they have to be nurtured through the teaching and instructions of the Holy Church, through the priests and through all those who are engaged in imparting the faith”. Let us all work together in this season of great fast towards renewed study of sacred scripture, life changing metanoia, redemptive communion with God and become a spirit filled, self sufficient and happy serving community.
