You’d need a medical-grade mask and a topnotch hand-and-face washing program to get any good out of wearing one for yourself. No, the need to wear a mask became apparent after doctors realized that much community spread of this disease could be blamed on people who either haven’t yet gotten ill, or never do. These people, the asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic, can spread the virus for a couple of days to a week to everyone they come in contact with. They have no idea they’re doing this. But if they wear a mask when they’re out shopping, meeting people or just walking around in a crowded area, it will block most of the virus-laden droplets they release when they sneeze, cough or talk.
