The volunteer Board of Trustees takes The Rock’s reputation as “a race run by runners for runners” seriously, and we hope this book provides many good memories. The 2003 Rock generated a lot of responses from participants, many included on these pages...Perfect weather, Beautiful course, Great support and Oh man, did you see those fighter jets? Photo: Mary Kennard This year, we added two new events. On Friday night, we had a Shindig at Eddie Deen’s Ranch with country-western style and Eddie’s signature barbecue. Thanks to Dan Roberts and the Clear Fork Band who played their award winning music and to the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders! And on Saturday morning, Dallas Mayor Laura Miller introduced, then ran in, the inaugural Mayor’s Race. Mayor Miller, an avid runner and fitness supporter, will make the 5K race a marathon weekend tradition. The Belo Expo was a the best yet, and our host hotel, Hyatt Regency - Reunion, was abuzz all Saturday with runners and shoppers getting ready for Sunday’s race. Photo: Mary Kennard This had to be one of the most exciting starts to a road race anywhere, any time. More than 8,500 runners and countless spectators were treated to spectacular sights at the start and all along the course. For those counting, there were 3,743 registered marathon runners, 2,667 half-marathon runners, and 2,025 relay rac- ers (405 teams). Many of you are pictured in this book. We hope you thanked a Dallas police officer as you ran. Members of the Dallas Police Association donated their time this year, providing a safe course and some enthusiastic cheers. A great race comes from the efforts of many. Every year, your feedback helps us Photo: Mary Kennard prepare. Sponsors contribute in ways that make it hard not to succeed. Over 2,000 volunteers work the course and behind the scenes. Prize money, for the marathon and the relay, bring elite athletes and international attention. We sincerely hope that looking over the race results and photos will bring back good memories and that we will see you again on Sunday, December 12, 2004. Thanks to the wonderful people at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children who make our efforts more rewarding than a paycheck.
