MENELL† Growing out of the rap and hip hop genres as well as advances in digital editing tools, music mashups have emerged as a defining genre for post-Napster generations. Yet the uncertain contours of copyright liability as well as prohibitive transaction costs have pushed this genre underground, stunting its development, limiting remix artists’ commercial channels, depriving sampled artists of fair compensation, and further alienating netizens and new artists from the copyright system. In the real world of transaction costs, subjective legal standards, and market power, no solution to the mashup problem will achieve perfection across all dimensions. The appropriate inquiry is whether an allocation mechanism achieves the best overall resolution of the trade-offs among authors’ rights, cumulative creativity, freedom of expression, and overall functioning of the copyright system. By adapting the long-standing cover license for the mashup genre, Congress can support a charismatic new genre while affording fairer compensation to owners of sampled works, engaging the next generations, and channeling disaffected music fans into authorized markets.     ABSTRACT Get Rich or Die Tryin’: A Semiotic Approach to the Construct of Wealth in Rap Music Kristine Ann Davis, M.A. Mentor: Sara J. Stone, Ph.D. For the past 30 years, rap music has made its way into the mainstream of America, taking an increasingly prominent place in popular culture, particularly for youth, its main consumers. This thesis looks at wealth through the lens of semiotics, an important component of critical/cultural theory, using a hermeneutical analysis of 11 rap songs, spanning the last decade of rap music to find signification and representation of wealth in the rap song lyrics. The research finds three important themes of wealth - relationship between wealth and the opposite sex, wealth that garners respect from other people, and wealth as a signifier for “living the good life” - and five signifiers of wealth – money, cars, attire, liquor, and bling. Coleman II t the end of a decade, and approaching a new, the dominating pres- ence of hip hop and R&B is operating on a new foundation – social Amedia. The influence an artist has on pop culture and music quality almost always coincides with the artist’s presence on social media. When looking back at the songs that will form the popular music for the 2010 decade, such as Drake’s 2016 single Hotline Bling, or this year’s Old Town Road, these songs can’t be mentioned without noting their respective memes and the social media commotion that trailed these songs for months after their releases. The unification of social media and hip hop music is the source of influence in which established and emerging artists benefit. When a song is popular on social media, the artist has all they need to establish a fan base even before recording a full-length album or releasing another single. This year has been the biggest example of rappers emerging from social media: Megan Thee Stallion off the Hot Girl Summer hashtag and Lil Nas X with the buzz of Old Town Road stemming from video-sharing app TikTok earlier this year. When it comes to The influence that these songs have had on pop music throughout 2019 the careers of artists is an example of black social media’s influence on pop culture.
