Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Graveyard Blues by Reina Salt In Gore Taste. Since putting Grindhouse Goodies into it's tomb for a rest I've had a new project to occupy my time. Lunchboxes. It all started with my friend Lana making a Donner Party lunchbox, that got the gears grinding for me. Lunchboxes are a wonderful medium to work in, they don't require me to have a lot of artistic skill, it doesn't demand a lot of time and attention, and oddly enough, I find it relaxing. The first two boxes I made were for the Flint Horror Con, I made a Manson Family box and a Friday the 13th box that focused mostly on the first film. I even got First Jason himself Ari Lehman to sign it! I have few pictures of the Jason one because I made it last minute and raffled it off before documenting it properly, but the person who won it went home happy, and that's what counts. From there I moved on to lunch box purses, and that came about from a Marilyn Manson lunchbox, because I knew there was more of a chance of a goth girl using it as a purse to take to the clubs/concerts than for someone to use as an actual lunchbox. I am in the process of finishing up a Pink Flamingos box and then In Gore Taste will be going live! It'll take a while before I get the new shop stocked up, but the wait will be worth it. What We're Reading This Weekend: Guilty Pleasures. You can’t go high brow all the time. Whether it’s a chick lit confection, a bodice-ripper or a zombie fest, just-for-fun books have their place. See what our staffers are unwinding with below – and let us know what you’re reading. Caryn Midler, Video Producer. Someday, Someday, Maybe. by Lauren Graham. The Parenthood star’s first novel definitely has a chick lit feel, which I usually avoid like the plague, but I’ve been whipping through it while drinking tea and eating cookies. I love the characters and the gritty setting, New York circa 1995 (no cell phones!) Even though I know where the story’s headed, I’m enjoying the trip. Lisa Kay Greissinger, Chief of Reporters Her Pick: The Great Escape by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I’ll admit it: sometimes after a stressful day I like to relax with a glass of wine and a nice romance novel. The Great Escape , a followup to Call Me Irresistible , is a gem among bodice-rippers – intelligent, funny and hot enough to make you sigh. Instead of saying “I do,” Lucy Joran jilts her too- perfect groom at the altar and hooks up with “Panda,” a tough-looking stranger who’s not what he seems. It’s a wild ride. Amber Sexton, photo editor Her pick: Graveyard Blues by Reina Salt. Hettie, the protagonist of this self-published horror novel, is a zombie – a murder victim – who becomes reanimated digging her way out of her grave. She and a retired police detective end up fighting her killer, a ghoul who can wear the skins of others. Creepy characters, detailed descriptions and it’s short. If you like scary stuff, it’s a good one. Check back every Thursday for another round of staff picks, and see more book reviews each week in PEOPLE magazine, on newsstands now. Plus, check out last week’s juicy celebrity memoirs and more great finds here. 129 FREE Kindle eBook Downloads. You said that the speaker's grief ended when she walked away from her mother's grave because "the sun came out" and that there was a "presence of happiness in her life once more", but I don't think she necessarily felt happy all of a sudden. She may have accepted the fact that her mother was dead but definitely not happy. The next stanza about bumps in the road helps prove that life has many obstacles and that eventually we get over them, but I don't think the sun represented an immediate happiness, maybe it helped show her that things will eventually be better. And Wyatt I really liked your analysis of the "stone pillow" part! For "Elegy for the Native Guard", was there any other meaning to it besides the lack of remembrance for the Native Guards or is there a bigger picture?? Miscellaneous. Decade of Difference: Willie Nelson (Day 4 of 5) In the 80s Willie Nelson joined Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson in forming the Highwaymen. The group issued three successful and starred in a movie. That decade saw Nelson help organize an enduring benefit for farmers. Along with John Mellencamp and Neil Young, the first Farm Aid concert was launched in 1985 raising $10 million to support family farms. Personal and legal problems troubled Willie Nelson as well, losing his oldest son to an accident on Christmas Day, 1991. Legal issues came from an IRS seizure of assets for $16 million in unpaid taxes and an arrest for marijuana possession in Texas. Through it all Nelson continued to successfully record and perform. 1993’s “Across the Borderline” featured an all star cast of collaborators and was produced by Ry Cooder. Among the artists appearing on the are Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Mose Allison, Sinead O’Conner and John Hiatt. Willie Nelson recorded and performed continuously in the 90s and 2000s and also continued with collaborations. Early in his career he focused on other country artists, but later this broadened considerably to include pop, rock, folk, reggae and rap artists. His fiftieth album came in 2002. “The Great Divide” was another collection that featured many contemporary artists working with Willie Nelson. In most cases the artists performed with Nelson songs they had written. Critics were not sold on the album, complaining that the production style did not take best advantage of Nelson’s voice. The public did not agree, making the album Willie Nelson’s highest charting album of the decade. Decade of Difference: Roy Orbison (Day 2) Decade of Difference: Roy Orbison (Day 2) Roy Orbison recorded 22 top 40 hits in the 60s before his career slowed. Misguided professional decisions, personal tragedy and self destruction all contributed to his fall from stardom. Albums in the 70s failed to sell and Orbison underwent triple bypass surgery. His career seemed all but over, if not for the remembrances of some famous fans. Linda Ronstadt, Van Halen and Don McLean had hits with his songs in the late Seventies and early Eighties, and in 1980 Orbison released “That Lovin’ You Feelin’ Again,” a Grammy-winning duet with Emmylou Harris. In 1985 there was Class of ’55, a reunion LP with Sun Records veterans Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. It culminated with Orbison’s first top 10 album in 2 decades”The Travelin’ Wilburys: Volume 1”. The Wilburys, recorded with friends Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison and Bob Dylan was recorded quickly with the album presenting the bandmates as five brothers from a single father but 5 different mothers. When Orbison completed the promotional work to support the album, he also completed with Jeff Lynne a new album of his own and headed out on tour to complete his comeback. In December of 1988 Orbison died in Tennessee from a massive heart attack. His album “Mystery Girl” was released in 1989, the first album of new material from the artist in 20 years and it reached the top 10 at the same time as the Travelin’ Wilburys album was there, making Orbison only the 2nd deceased musician to have simultaneous top 10 albums. The seven member band Ages and Ages come from Portland, Oregon bringing a sound that sounds a bit like a gospel choir mashed up with a glee club layered with some offbeat pop music. Tim Perry formed the band in 2009, recruiting a group of multi-instrumentalists who could also sing, allowing the band to mix a variety of instruments with some complex vocal harmonies. The band got some famous fans, landing a song on the 2012 campaign playlist for Barack Obama. While the band members have changed over the years, co founders Tim Perry and Rob Oberdorfer remain as the nucleus of the band. On their latest album “Me You We They”, Ages and Ages wraps some sweet pop sounds around songs that on closer listening are fairly dark and despondent. Decade of Difference: Nick Lowe. Decade of Difference: Nick Lowe. Happy 71st birthday to Nick Lowe! The songwriter/musician/producer/author made his music start in 1967 playing with schoolmate Brinsley Schwartz. By 1969 the band had a country rock sound and their UK promoter booked them in the Fillmore East in New York – where they bombed – and only gained popularity after playing the UK pub circuit. Lowe wrote many of his most famous songs while playing in Brinsley Schwartz, including his biggest commercial success, (What’s so Funny ‘Bout)Peace, Love and Understanding. Besides becoming a signature song for Elvis Costello, it appeared on the 1992 soundtrack to “The Bodyguard” and that record sold 40 million copies. After Brinsley Schwartz, Lowe moved on to play with Rockpile and then published his and Stiff Records’ first single “So It Goes”. Nick Lowe released solo records and played with Rockpile through the 70s. The 80s saw him play with several groups including Little Village a band formed to record the John Hiatt album “Bring the Family”. His work as a producer includes the first five Elvis Costello albums, the first single from the Pretenders, Graham Parker, Johnny Cash and John Hiatt. A New York Daily News article quoted Lowe as saying his greatest fear in recent years was “sticking with what you did when you were famous.” “I didn’t want to become one of those thinning-haired, jowly old geezers who still does the same shtick they did when they were young, slim and beautiful,” he said. “That’s revolting and rather tragic.”. He has done a great job of accomplishing that, releasing an album of standards, and developing a recording and performance relationship with LA surf guitar band Los Straitjackets. In 1966 Neil Young reconnected with Stephen Stills in Los Angeles and along with Richie Furay formed Buffalo Springfield. The folk / psychedelic band was a success from the start, but one band member was deported and the others bickered with their management, ending in a breakup after only three records. Despite their short existence, Buffalo Springfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Neil Young’s second solo album featured the creation of his long time backing band Crazy Horse. After his first two albums, Young collaborated with Crosby, Stills and Nash, making it Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Although the quartet was very successful, it could not survive the constant bickering among band members – especially Stephen Stills and Neil Young. In 1976 Young and Stills gave it another try with the Stills-Young band. After releasing their first album the band began a tour which Young quit after nine shows, via the following telegram: “Dear Stephen, funny how some things that start spontaneously end that way. Eat a peach. Neil.” Photo Credit: Henry Diltz. Fresh Roots, New Blues Playlist 12/21/2019. Fresh Roots – New Blues on WNRN. Obligatory Xmas Show. Air Date: 12/21/19, Saturday 6-8 PM.
