Offi cials warn over delta More Americans seek shots as cases surge

NEW YORK, July 27, (AP): Infections are climbing across the US, and mask mandates and other COVID-19 preven- tion measures are making a comeback in some places as health offi cials issue increasingly dire warnings about the highly contagious delta variant. But in a possible sign that the warnings are getting through to more Americans, vaccination rates are creeping up again, offering hope that the nation could yet break free of the coronavirus if people who have been reluctant to re- ceive the shot are fi nally inoculated. Vaccinations ticked up over the weekend, with about 657,000 vaccines administered Saturday and nearly 780,000 on Sunday, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 7-day rolling average on Sun- day was about 583,000 vaccinations a day, up from about 525,000 a week prior. The country will need much higher levels of immunity to crush the resur- gent virus — probably 85% to 90%, said Dr Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health. The current level stands at about 67%, counting prior infections. “So we need a lot more vaccina- tions. Or a lot more infections” and Fauci thus more suffering, he said. Nearly 57% of the country has received at least one vaccine dose, and about 49% of Americans are fully inoculated. The virus has killed almost 611,000 people in the US since the pandemic started. Meanwhile, some municipal offi cials are re-imposing some virus rules meant to slow the spread of the disease. ‘Scrutiny is exhausting’ Spears fi les to end her father’s control

LOS ANGELES, July 27, (AP): Britney Spears’ new attorney petitioned Monday to oust her father from the conservatorship that has controlled her life and money for 13 years and replace him with a professional ac- countant. Matthew Rosengart said in documents fi led in Los Angeles Superior court that the current legal arrange- ment “has grown increasingly toxic and is simply no longer tenable.” He proposed that James Spears be replaced with CPA Jason Rubin as conservator of the pop star’s es- tate, which documents say equates to $2.7 million in cash and more than $57 million in assets. Rosengart said in the fi ling that before he sought to end the conservatorship, he was fi rst addressing “the most pressing issue facing Ms. Spears: removing Mr. Spears as conservator of the estate.” “Any father who genuinely loves his daughter and has her best interests at heart should willingly step aside in favor of the highly respected pro- fessional fi duciary nominated here,” Rosengart said in the Spears documents. Lynne Spears, Britney’s mother and James’ ex-wife, said in a declaration sup- porting Rosengart’s fi ling that his “microscopic con- trol” over her health care and business decisions in a key period in 2018 and 2019 was especially damaging.
