WWF Hoi Ha Marine Education Programme Community Group Information Sheet

I. BACKGROUND Jockey Club HSBC WWF Hoi Ha Marine Life Centre was officially opened in 2008 in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park, which is one of the Hong Kong’s first designated Marine Parks in Hong Kong in 1996. It is recognized as a unique site due to its rich diversity of marine life. The establishment of the centre provides access to the priceless marine resource for enjoyment and education.

II. THE PROGRAMME WWF has developed the MARINE EDUCATION PROGRAMME (Community Group) for community centres, uniform groups and tertiary institutes. Through doing half-day hands-on activities, participants will be able to experience and explore the coastal environment, marine life in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park and also learn the importance of sustainable lifestyle.

By doing field study in different coastal habitats and observing the interesting marine life, participants 4 * Coastal Ecologist can find out the high ecological value (For Tertiary institutes) of the marine park and understand the inter-relationship between habitats and ecosystem.

By using scientific methods and equipments, participants can measure physical parameters of sea water and exploring the life of planktons. Participants will know the Oceanographer inter-relationship between physical 5 (For Tertiary institutes) and biological parameters and their importance to the marine environment.

(Organizations applied this theme need to pay $800 deposit on the visit day. We will refund it to the organizations after the visit but if any equipment is damaged, organizations should pay the indemnity.)

Participants will use stereomicroscope to explore the interesting plankton world. They will learn the characteristics of planktons and Hoi Ha Exploration its importance to the nature. An interesting 6 (For 12-18 youth or other seafood choice activity will also help them to age groups) choose sustainable seafood in order to reduce ecological footprint and conserve the marine environment.

Each programme includes around 1 hour Glass-bottomed Boat trip. Participants can take the specially designed glass-bottomed boat to observe the beautiful community of Hoi Ha Wan.

This activity is weather dependent. It will be replaced by other activities if the on-site weather is not favourable for the boat trip.

* Remarks :::Those themes include outdoor activities that are dependent to the weather. Participants are needed to wade in the shallow water with shorts and canvas shoes and the tide must below 1.3m. Please check the tide level from the Hong Kong Observatory at http://www.hko.gov.hk/tide/eKLWtide.htm before sending in the application. If there is adverse weather, the chosen theme will be replaced by other indoor themes.

III. IMPORTANT REMINDERS, PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLICATION: 1. Please submit an individual application form for each visit programme application.
