With Liberty and Justice for All

Happy Independence Day! July 4, a Sunday this year, is a good time to reflect on the nature of our country, a great experiment that was begun nearly two and a half centuries ago with the allure of freedom from tyranny and oppression. We thank God for America and its greatness, even as we lament its imperfections at times. In the Pledge of Allegiance, the last phrase is striking to me today: “With liberty and justice for all.” Most of the time the “all” we think of are those who tend to be marginalized or underserved—the poor and others who are discriminated against. Liberty and justice are especially suited for and needed by these fellow citizens. But the word “all” is not limited to just a segment of the population. It refers to people of every economic and social category. So, it also includes those who have achieved the American dream in a way that has seen them be rewarded monetarily or with power. We think critically and skeptically of the rich and powerful at times. Sometimes it is with good reason due to actions that oppress others. However, the vast majority of those who have achieved have done so through hard work and a spirit of service toward others. Liberty and justice are due them, too. This is somewhat familiar to what the apostle Paul wrote in 1st Timothy 2 regarding who should be prayed for and given thanks for. He said, “I urge that prayers and thanksgivings be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” There was not condemnation, but concern for even the elite and those in authority. Paul believed that their well-being made for the well-being of all. Despite their tendency to sin like the rest of us, those in authority are God’s children, too. “With liberty and justice for all.” In this great country, we are all worthy of freedom and fairness.

Nurturing The Faith of Those Who Are The Church To Come

During these past sixteen months, Family Promise guest families have been staying at the day center on Middleburg Pike. Host and support volunteers drop off meals and gas/grocery gift cards (breakfast/lunch). Surprisingly, guest families have been moved out into their own housing amidst this time of spiraling rental costs and diminished supply of apartments. Now that places are opening up in our area, Rev. John Mark Brown, Director of Family Promise Knoxville has been working with host congregations to evaluate their plans for opening up in the coming months. Westside UUC is doing outside services at this time. FPC's next support host dates are August 29-September 5. We still have time before a decision is made concerning in person hosting with our families. When I have more definitive information about the hosting decision, I will post the information in the Banner, as well as contacting those who have been Family Promise volunteers in the past. The health and safety of both our hosts and our families is of utmost concern. If you would like information on volunteering, please contact Beth Loyless at [email protected].

3 4 Music at FPC Dr. Angela Batey, Director

O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.

In my Good News Banner article from a year ago in July 2020, I wrote about what I missed during the pandemic: I have missed singing with others -- hymnals in hand, voices at full-throttle! During this COVID time, we have all learned things about ourselves. I think one of the most important things I learned was something that defined me and I did not realize how important that was until it was taken away --- making music with others and conducting choirs. Leading others into the magic of choral music not only challenges me to be a better teacher, but it also fills my soul when I understand the joy that others feel as they embrace choral music. I went on to say: But one of these days, I want light to spill through the sanctuary windows and spread across my hymnal, and the organ to give a mighty introduction, giving me my cue to sing. I plan to weep. That weeping moment FINALLY came during worship on Sunday, May 30 with the return of no mask/distancing restrictions as our Associate Director of Music, Tami Newsom, opened the organ up in a fantastic, thundering alternate harmonization on the last verse of Holy, Holy, Holy and your voices rose above it all in full-throated singing! Electrifying moments like these are probably why I am such the lover of hymns and hymn-singing. It has been said that when you sing a hymn at church you actually are praying twice… and let me tell you I plan to use that loophole at the pearly gates. Music has always been an integral part of my life and singing certainly IS something I have done my entire life – my mother tells me I hummed myself to sleep in my crib! I came up through the children’s choirs in my home church, then to youth choir, then to the ‘adult choir’ as it was called – first singing in that group while sitting next to my grandmother, who could sing a mean alto line! It was there I first learned to value the liturgy through word and song with the participation of the people; first

5 because it is a biblical mandate, and second because it is therein that I have most regularly encountered the Godhead throughout my life – usually in a beautifully- appointed sanctuary. And those formative years certainly had a great bearing on how I have lived my life as a musician – worship ever and always playing an integral part. After all, it is the power of music to push and pull, eventually leading one to step into one’s faith. As for me, music was a pull that would not only teach me to read the sound that floated from the choir loft to raise up a congregation, but to most importantly allow me to enter into the lives of the most interesting people I will ever meet. All their songs now reside and travel with me as part of my soundtrack… I have been fortunate that way. Each worship service is a new song. A new chance to let the heavens rejoice and let the earth be glad. A call to come out of the cold darkness into the warmth of the light… and sing for joy especially in trying times. A few years ago, I was in the middle glorious voices singing an Evensong and my faith grabbed onto a few lyrics that served me well when the pandemic hit:

The stars have disappeared, and distant lights are dim, My soul is filled with fears, the seas are breaking in. I hear the Master cry, “Be not afraid, ’tis I,” And the storm is passing over, Hallelujah!”

Then I finally understood. You may question the strength of a hymn against that of a sermon or reading and grade their effects on you. A hymn, at least for me carries of my faith. It is the sound of my joy, my grief, my anger, my fear, my agitation in the now and not in the distant past or future. After all, music sets your mental stage and pushes your soul to march, to dance, or take communion. This in the end brings you face to face with the fact that you are the Lord’s new song brought forward to rejoice in his creation. So, my friends, come to worship, sing a new song and rejoice!

Town’s free yoga class ‘filled JOIN A CLASS TODAY! with movement, laughter’ JOIN A CLASS TODAY! April 8, 2021 by Michelle Hollenhead

The Town of Farragut is offering a program that teaches families new skills, while also promoting togetherness and fun. Its Family Yoga class, which meet at 5 p.m., Mondays in Farragut Community Center’s Assembly Hall — it began as pre-school yoga classes last July — has been ongoing since November, featuring a few dedicated families who regularly attend. However, Brittany Spencer, Town Special Event & Program coordinator, is hoping to shine a spotlight on the program to potentially generate more interest. “This is a great, free weekly program for families of all ages that is filled with movement and laughter,” Spencer said. “(Teacher) Jenny Trussell is a registered children’s yoga teacher and is also a 500-hour registered yoga teacher and has been teaching our Family Yoga class since we re- opened the community center last summer. “She is an amazing, passionate teacher; volunteers her time for those free classes that she provides to the community,” she added. Trussell, a Farragut resident who has been teaching yoga almost seven years, said she wanted to offer something to children to help them move as the pandemic continued, and the classes quickly evolved into including all family members. “We started a pre-school class, and early on we had older siblings who were practicing along with us, and parents were already here, too. Since there are so few classes for families to move together, the class organically grew to what it is today,” Trussell said. Chris and Rebekah Page and their two daughters, Audrey 10, and Beatrice, 6, are one of the regular families who attend, and were front and center Monday, March 29. “My daughters really enjoyed it from the beginning and really took to it, so it was nice for all of us to be able to join,” Rebekah said. “There are not many classes for children and their parents, and it is really great for us to all be together. “The classes are only 30 minutes, so they don’t take long, and it doesn’t take up much of the evening,” she added. “It is also a very convenient location for us.” “What is really special to me is that the kids show such a love for learning, and I often have them lead some of our moves,” Trussell said, adding, “Teaching yoga to children is all about modeling through play and imagination. I love being able to teach them how yoga can be accessible to everyone.” The Family Yoga class is just one offering from Trussell through the Town: this week she began leading a free “Relax and Breathe” class from 7 to 7:45 p.m., each Wednesday, which began April 7. It will continue though May 12 . This class is described by Spencer as being a “restful 45-minute class that introduces breath work, mediation and gentle stretches for adults. No prior experience is required, as the class is geared for all skill and fitness levels. Those attending are asked to register through the Town’s Parks and Recreation website, www.farragutparksandrec.org under the Programs and Events tab. Additionally, anyone who signs up will receive a free pass to Blue Ridge Yoga, where Trussell also teaches family classes. “It’s important to me to support our wonderful local yoga studio in addition to offering community classes,” said Trussell, who also finds time to lead chair yoga classes at Farragut Presbyterian Church. “We are so fortunate to have Jenny as part of our community — and we are excited about her upcoming class for adults as well,” Spencer added. To contact Trussell directly, e-mail her at [email protected]. 11 Our beloved church family,

12 The Stephen Ministry Program: Stephen Ministers are sometimes considered the “after people.” They come into a person’s life immediately after a crisis has hit and serve as long as needed. They serve by listening, caring, giving one-on-one support and praying. It happens quietly and confidentially, yet the ministry is powerful, healing and redemptive. If you would like to know more about Stephen Ministry, please contact the church office or one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders: Matt Nieman, Jeanie Oakley, Elizabeth Wilson or Beth Martin. 13 JULY ANNIVERSARIES JULY BIRTHDAYS 7/02 Samantha White 7/02 Brian Davison and Darren Schmitz 7/02 Sandra Feast 7/05 Philip and Becky Dangle 7/03 Peggy Monger 7/06 John and Jeannie Tabor 7/03 Graham Colloredo 7/09 Les and Marie Shear 7/05 David Gargan 7/09 Steve Dehmlow and Judy Ireland 7/06 Kirk Morris 7/12 Steve and Donna Plumlee 7/12 Nathan and Lois Burris 7/06 Annette Meador 7/16 Eric and Betty Nicholls 7/06 Jacob Nieman 7/24 Jim and Linda Scothorn 7/07 Kirby Purjet 7/29 Tim and Beth Hallman 7/08 Catherine Manning 7/08 Paul Hopson 7/10 Annika Hare 7/10 Graham Morrell 7/10 Parker Morrell 7/10 Wendy (Richards) Hahn 7/11 Joanie Scheuer 7/12 Barbara Kivlin 7/15 Patti Davis 7/15 Jan Roberts 7/16 Keila Hare 7/16 Van Heflin 7/16 Margaret Pillsbury 7/17 Gloria Purjet 7/18 Judy Ireland 7/18 Mike Murphy 7/18 Edi Johnson 7/19 Kathi Damelio lebra 7/21 MaryAnne Walls Ce te 7/22 Ron Grunke ea 7/23 Sue Lester c 7/24 Kirsten Maley h 7/24 Lynda White 7/25 Reagan Corbett o 7/25 Hilda Ingle t
