E kaabo (eh-kah-bow). Welcome.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! If it’s July 4th we must be celebrating the birth of the nation or the birth of Volume Burks and Joann Bryant! We did get to sing happy birthday and eat cake in honor of Volume at the Atlantic Beach home of Donnalea and Tom Goelz, who had just finished renovations on their pool and outdoor hot tub overlooking the Atlantic. And so, at a party meant to celebrate the United The birthday twins, Volume Burks and States, complete with the beach’s official fireworks and those of nearby neighbors, we sang to Volume the traditional birthday song and Joann Bryant “Odunde”, the tune by the late Nigerian master drummer Babatunde Olatunji, which we have adopted as a birthday song. On the weekend we had a blast at the Pleasant Grove home of Don and Pat Portis, who held a fish fry for Don’s cousin, Joann Bryant, who is also a childhood friend of Ok Sun Burks. No self-respecting fish fry would be complete without crabs and the 4th of July is a bust without barbecue. So, there were crabs, barbecue ribs and chicken, potato salad, slaw, baked beans, green beans, and cake galore. Everything was finger lickin’ good! Don and Pat have almost completed the family home that Don is building on their several acres outside of Stark, Florida, and it will be quite a show piece when it is done! Among the many family and friends who joined Don and Pat to celebrate Joann were: Joann’s Left to right: Maurice Portis, Billy hubby, Joe Bryant; her mom and aunt, Bobbie Jean Clark and Lillie Pearl Portis; daughters Ray Portis, Don Portis, and Herbert and sons-in-law Iris and Al Sanon and Samyra and Demetrius Boney; granddaughter Melena Tyson, Jr. Boney; cousins Billy Ray Portis and wife, Maurice Portis, and Herbert Tyson, Jr.; and Ok Sun and Volume. Joe and Joann Bryant HAPPY BIRTHDAY VOLUME AND JOANN AND MANY MORE!

Beth Meyer, Director of Disabled Services for the City of Jacksonville, brought greetings from Mayor Alvin Brown, along with a proclamation naming July 1st “Pine Castle Day.” Alma Perchy recounted the early days of Pine Castle when her parents enrolled her brother, Bill Bishop, as one of the first students at age four in 1958. He has rarely missed a day since, becoming a dedicated and highly skilled Pine Castle employee! Everyone calls him “Mr. Pine Castle” and he has a name tag like the ones worn by the staff. After meeting Bill, I think they should declare him the Mayor of Pine Castle! Jon May, Executive Director of Pine Castle, presented a plaque to Bill for 58 years of personal achievement as a student, employee and true friend to all at the facility. Pine Castle began as a school in the early 1950s, at a time when children with severe disabilities were kept at home or institutionalized. By 1965, with public schools developing programs for special needs children, Pine Castle turned its focus on serving those who, after graduating, would need to learn practical skills to sustain daily life. Today Pine Castle operates with a staff of more than 100, and programs that provide onsite work and training for nearly 400 participants, as well as five group homes located on and off campus. Attendees included : Senator Aaron Bean, Gayle Granger, Regional Manager of Florida’s Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD Area 4), and Jacksonville City Council Member, Don Redman. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WE BID FAREWELL TO Mary Barnett Mitchell, Ph.D. who passed away peacefully on June 27, 2013. Dr. Mitchell was a life- long member of Historic Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, a retired edu- cator, and an inspiration to many. Tamer Britton, one of Mary’s former students, reflected about how she was influenced by her friend and mentor to become a Home Economics teacher in the Duval County Public Schools, and, like her mentor, became known as “Jack the Ripper” because she made students rip out seams that did not meet the highest standards of tailoring. Ironically, before the funeral began, Charlene Taylor Hill related a similar story to me as she reminisced about being a “home ec” student of Mary’s at New Stanton Senior High School. Mary will be missed by many, but most of all her husband Sollie Mitchell; niece, Dr. Alva Barnett; nephews, Maurice H. Barnett, Jr. (Carolyn), Charles T. Barnett (Mary); devoted cousin, Cynthia Gloster; and Irvylyn and Charlie Kennebrew.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT a year has gone by since we mourned the passing of our dear Betty Asque Davis, retired columnist of Lifestyle: Socially Speaking in The Florida Star, friend, and mentor. She touched the lives of many in her professional and personal life. She is missed by all her knew her but, we know there isn’t anyone who could miss her more than her family, including Mrs. Inez Asque, Carl, Mikki, Jimmy, and Lorn. We honor the memory of this grand lady. JULY 13, 2013 THE STAR PAGE 5 PAGE 6 THE STAR JULY 13, 2013 CrimeCrime andand JusticeJustice A Publication of the Florida Star and Georgia Star
What is the Northside LOVE Arts & Farmers Market? The concept of the Northside Love Arts & Farmers Market is a basic one. It is the vision for the event to provide a neighborhood marketplace that provides fresh food options, showcases local businesses, nonprofits, artists, entertainers and educational and health programming that is beneficial for both the community resident (consumer) and the service provider and/or business owner.
How did the idea of LOVE come about? The “LOVE” in Northside LOVE Arts & Farmers Market stands for Lifting Our Various Enterprises. This acronym was coined by Arnett Green, a northside community stakeholder and retired businessman. The vision for the event was developed when two active community members, (a business owner, Leandrew Mills, III and a community activist, Angie Nixon) were discussing the need of more support for entrepreneurs and small business owners within the community, as well as more healthy food choices and information on healthy lifestyle choices. Small businesses are the lifeline of the community and without them, the areas often become blighted. This was the case for the Kings Road/Soutel Drive Corridor. It is the goal that the event will lead to improving and enhancing the quality of life for residents, by providing them with the services and products that they need and are beneficial to them, as well as promoting growth and exposure for businesses and organizations within the Jacksonville community that will provide the residents with those products.
Why do it? The African-American population has a buying power of nearly $1 trillion. Northwest Jacksonville is comprised of a majority African-American population, however this demographic, more specifically those located within the Kings Road/Soutel Drive Corridor (suffer from stagnant economic development, a lack of resources and amenities (ie; positive family-friendly entertainment, diverse fitness initiatives/programs and nutritious food options, etc.), an above average crime rate and disproportionate health issues within their community. The Northside LOVE Market will allow businesses and organizations to market their products and services to a demographic that is known for high consumerism. The event will also seek to provide the community with entertainment, nutrition and health education, as well as offer resources and amenities, not easily accessible in their neighborhoods
Who is the LOVE Market for? Community residents in Northwest Jacksonville (Health Zone 1), as well as small business owners and organizations looking to promote their products and services. When& where will the LOVE Market be held? The Northside LOVE Arts & Farmers Market will be held the last Sunday of each month from June-November, 2013. The event will be held at Lonnie C. Miller Park, located on Soutel Drive, near the Sherwood Forest and Harborview neighborhoods in Jacksonville City Council District 10.
