Small, Former CBS Washington Bureau Chief and Former President of NBC News to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award New York, N.Y. – July 15, 2014 (revised 7.28.14) – Nominations for the 35th Annual News and Documentary Emmy ® Awards were announced today by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The News & Documentary Emmy ® Awards will be presented on Tuesday, September 30 th , 2014, at a ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located in the Time Warner Center in New York City. The event will be attended by more than 1,000 television and news media industry executives, news and documentary producers and journalists. Emmy ® Awards will be presented in 43 categories, including the first-ever categories reserved for news & documentary programming in Spanish. William J. Small, the legendary CBS News Washington Bureau chief from 1962-1974, and later President of NBC News, will receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement award at the 35 th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards. "Bill Small is an icon in the television news industry," said Chuck Dages, Chairman, NATAS. "As Bureau Chief of the CBS Washington News office throughout the 60's and 70's, he was paramount in the dramatic evolution of network news that continues today.     Analysis of Talk Shows Between Obama and Trump Administrations by Jack Norcross — 69 An Analysis of the Political Affiliations and Professions of Sunday Talk Show Guests Between the Obama and Trump Administrations Jack Norcross Journalism Elon University Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in an undergraduate senior capstone course in communications Abstract The Sunday morning talk shows have long been a platform for high-quality journalism and analysis of the week’s top political headlines. This research will compare guests between the first two years of Barack Obama’s presidency and the first two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. A quantitative content analysis of television transcripts was used to identify changes in both the political affiliations and profession of the guests who appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” CBS’s “Face the Nation,” ABC’s “This Week” and “Fox News Sunday” between the two administrations. Findings indicated that the dominant political viewpoint of guests differed by show during the Obama administration, while all shows hosted more Republicans than Democrats during the Trump administration. Furthermore, U.S. Senators and TV/Radio journalists were cumulatively the most frequent guests on the programs. I. Introduction Sunday morning political talk shows have been around since 1947, when NBC’s “Meet the Press” brought on politicians and newsmakers to be questioned by members of the press. The show’s format would evolve over the next 70 years, and give rise to fellow Sunday morning competitors including ABC’s “This Week,” CBS’s “Face the Nation” and “Fox News Sunday.” Since the mid-twentieth century, the overall media landscape significantly changed with the rise of cable news, social media and the consumption of online content.

While last year, we faced the sad task of recognizing the lives and careers of two Oincomparable photographers, Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, this year our attention turns to two writers — The New York Times’ Anthony Shadid and Marie Colvin of The Sunday Times of London. While our focus then was on the horrors of Gadhafi’s Libya, it is now the Syria of Bashar al- Assad. All four of these giants of our profession gave their lives in the service of an ideal and a mission that we consider so vital to our way of life — a full, complete and objective understanding of a world that is so all too often contemptuous or ignorant of these values. Theirs are the same talents and accomplishments to which we pay tribute in each of our awards tonight — and that the Overseas Press Club represents every day throughout the year. For our mission, like theirs, does not stop as we file from this room. The OPC has moved resolutely into the digital age but our winners and their skills remain grounded in the most fundamental tenets expressed through words and pictures — unwavering objectivity, unceasing curiosity, vivid story- telling, thought-provoking commentary.

    People, Places, Things Three Mother Seton School, Emmitsburg, middle school students, Matthew Benjamin, Robin Wivell and Mitchell Swope are among dozens of students selected to participate in the Celebration of the Arts 2009 March 23 at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore. Middle and high school students from the Archdiocese of Baltimore gifted in art, dance, drama and music will showcase their talents in an evening performance and display. Doors open at 6 p.m. to view art displays, and the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, which cost $25 with a $3 service charge, are available through the Meyerhoff Ticket Office. He co-chairs the Maryland March for Life each year in Annapolis.     Charlie Rose Latest to Fall in Harassment Scandal Ronn Torossian, CEO, 5WPR Yet another media giant has been felled after multiple allegations of sexual harassment piled up to sink his career. Other than Bill O’Reilly, who was fired from Fox after his accusers went public, the unceremonious end to Charlie Rose’s media career may have been the biggest headline yet. Both CBS and PBS parted ways with the popular news anchor after multiple women came forward with some very specific allegations against Rose. In a blunt statement, CBS said: Charlie Rose (Photo source: Twitter) “A short time ago we terminated Charlie Rose’s employment with CBS News, effective immediately… This followed the revelation yesterday of extremely disturbing and intolerable behavior said to have revolved around his PBS program. Despite Charlie’s important journalistic contribution to our news division, there is absolutely nothing more important, in this or any organization, than ensuring a safe, professional workplace — a supportive environment where people feel they can do their best work. We need to be such a place.” Let’s unpack that statement from Public a Relations perspective… First, it should be said that Rose produced his own program, which was then distributed on CBS and PBS networks. However, because the intricacies of this contract were not public knowledge, Rose was effectively a very public face for both networks. They needed to make a clean, public cut to demonstrate their independence from his brand. This is one step in the process Fox fumbled a bit with O’Reilly, and they are still taking hits over it.
