ULRICH BUNDLES ON CUBIC FOURFOLDS DANIELE FAENZI AND YEONGRAK KIM Abstract. We show the existence of rank 6 Ulrich bundles on a smooth cubic fourfold. First, we construct a simple sheaf E of rank 6 as an elementary modification of an ACM bundle of rank 6 on a smooth cubic fourfold. Such an E appears as an extension of two Lehn-Lehn-Sorger-van Straten sheaves. Then we prove that a general deformation of E(1) becomes Ulrich. In particular, this says that general cubic fourfolds have Ulrich complexity 6. Introduction An Ulrich sheaf on a closed subscheme X of PN of dimension n and degree d is a non-zero coherent sheaf F on X satisfying H∗(X, F(−j)) = 0 for 1 ≤ j ≤ n. In particular, the cohomology table {hi(X, F(j))} of F is a multiple of the cohomology table of Pn. -

The Genus of a Riemann Surface in the Plane 2 Let S ⊂ CP be a plane curve of degree δ. We prove here that: (δ − 1)(δ − 2) g = 2 We'll start with a version of the: n B´ezoutTheorem. If S ⊂ CP has degree δ and G is a homogeneous polynomial of degree d not vanishing identically on S (i.e. G 62 Id), then deg(div(G)) = dδ Proof. The intersection V (G) \ S is a finite set. We choose a linear form l that is non-zero on all the points of V (G) \ S, and then φ = G=ld is meromorphic when restricted to S, and div(G) − d · div(l) = div(φ) has degree zero. But div(l) has degree δ, by the definition of δ. 2 Now let S ⊂ CP be a planar embedding of a Riemann surface, and let F 2 C[x0; x1; x2]δ generate the ideal I of S and assume, changing coordinates if necessary, that (0 : 1 : 0) 62 S and that the line x2 = 0 is transverse to S, necessarily meeting S in δ points. The Adjunction Conjecture and Its Applications
The Adjunction Conjecture and its applications Florin Ambro Abstract Adjunction formulas are fundamental tools in the classification theory of algebraic va- rieties. In this paper we discuss adjunction formulas for fiber spaces and embeddings, extending the known results along the lines of the Adjunction Conjecture, independently proposed by Y. Kawamata and V. V. Shokurov. As an application, we simplify Koll´ar’s proof for the Anghern and Siu’s quadratic bound in the Fujita’s Conjecture. We also connect adjunction and its precise inverse to the problem of building isolated log canonical singularities. Therefore, whenever two varieties are closely related, it is essential to find formulas comparing their canonical divisors. Such formulas are called adjunction formulas. -

APPENDIX A Intersection Theory In this appendix we will outline the generalization of intersection theory and the Riemann-Roch theorem to nonsingular projective varieties of any dimension. To motivate the discussion, let us look at the case of curves and surfaces, and then see what needs to be generalized. For a divisor D on a curve X, leaving out the contribution of Serre duality, we can write the Riemann-Roch theorem (IV, 1.3) as x(.!Z'(D)) = deg D + 1 - g, where xis the Euler characteristic (III, Ex. 5.1). On a surface, we can write the Riemann-Roch theorem (V, 1.6) as 1 x(!l'(D)) = 2 D.(D - K) + 1 + Pa· In each case, on the left-hand side we have something involving cohomol ogy groups of the sheaf !l'(D), while on the right-hand side we have some numerical data involving the divisor D, the canonical divisor K, and some invariants of the variety X. Of course the ultimate aim of a Riemann-Roch type theorem is to compute the dimension of the linear system IDI or of lnDI for large n (II, Ex. 7.6). This is achieved by combining a formula for x(!l'(D)) with some vanishing theorems for Hi(X,!l'(D)) fori > 0, such as the theorems of Serre (III, 5.2) or Kodaira (III, 7.15). We will now generalize these results so as to give an expression for x(!l'(D)) on a nonsingular projective variety X of any dimension. And while we are at it, with no extra effort we get a formula for x(t&"), where @" is any coherent locally free sheaf. -

If we ignore that point we can consider the graph Γ of the well-defined map P 2 \ {(1, 0, 0)} → P 1 2 1 2 1 inside P \ {(1, 0, 0)} × P . If(x0,x1,x2; y0,y1) is a point in P × P then clearly y0x2 − y1x1 = 0 for points in Γ, because that is just another way of saying that (x1,x2) = λ(y0,y1) for some λ 6= 0. But this polynomial equation makes sense for the whole product and its zeroes make up the closure Γ of the graph. Now there is a projection π : Γ → P 1 given by the projection onto the second factor, which is defined on the whole of Γ as it is defined on the whole of P 2 × P 1. But what is the relation of Γ to P 2? There is of course a projection of P 2 × P 1 to the first factor that can be restricted to Γ. What are its fibers? If (x0,x1,x2) 6= (1, 0, 0) then not both x1,x2 can be zero, thus there is a unique 1 point (y0,y1) ∈ P such that (x0,x1,x2; y0,y1) ∈ Γ. Thus the projection is 1 : 1. However over (1, 0, 0) there will be no restriction on y0,y1 so the fiber is the entire line P 1! Thus Γ is the same as P 2 except over the point P where it has been replaced by an entire line. -

Introduction
Introduction There will be no specific text in mind. Sources include Griffiths and Harris as well as Hartshorne. Others include Mumford's "Red Book" and "AG I- Complex Projective Varieties", Shafarevich's Basic AG, among other possibilities. We will be taught to the test: that is, we will be being prepared to take orals on AG. This means we will de-emphasize proofs and do lots of examples and applications. We prove smooth, low degree complete intersections in projec- tive space are rationally simply connected in a strong sense. Main results sec-intro There is a well-developed algebro-geometric analogue of path connectedness: A nonempty, projective, complex variety is rationally connected if each pair of closed points is contained in a rational curve, cf. [Kol96], [Deb01]. To give a flavor of this notion, we mention that a smooth complete intersection of c hypersurfaces in Pn of degrees d1, . , dc is rationally connected if and only if c X n ≥ di. i=1 A path connected space is simply connected if the space of based paths is path connected. Barry Mazur suggested an algebro-geometric analogue of simple con- nectedness: a rationally connected variety should be rationally simply connected if the space of based, 2-pointed rational curves of suitably positive class is rationally connected.
