JENNIFER TUYEN

Tyrian photo by LANDREY BURDICK PRODUCTION MANAGER Tuyen runs the stage Reporting by KELLEY FOX Senior Jen Tuyen knows how to put on a show—a play, that is. She has served as stage manager since her junior year. She had been recommended for the position to Drama Club Adviser Amanda Baker by her sophomore English teacher, Natalie Love. Love says she saw a lot of the qualities in Tuyen that are needed to be effective at the job—“organized, detail-oriented, dependable.” A different kind of challenge for Tuyen, the role took her out of her comfort zone to explore another side of herself—and she discov- ered a new confidence. Tuyen runs the rehearsals—prompting actors on their lines, cu- ing them and giving stage directions. She lists as her strengths on the job as “being organized, staying focused and dedicated to the group, and being attentive and available at a moment’s notice,” essential elements in good stage management. In her first year as manager, the play was a full-length comedy/ mystery. This year’s show consisted of two classic fairy tales: Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel. Tuyen says that although the atmosphere changes with each cast and every season has its own kind of energy, a bond forms nonethe- less. The job started out as just a fun side project, but it turned into Tyrian photos by LILLIAN WALTERS something more meaningful.
