8 | The Chimes · St. Athanasius Parish FAITH FIRST

Working with the Scriptures by Vinal Van Benthem, sfo September 2, 2018 Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 There was a time in Catholic practice when everyone knew exactly what to do and when to do it. We knew when to eat meat and when to eat fish. We knew when to wear a hat and when to take it off. We knew these things because this was “what we had always done.” People could tell by looking at us that we were Catholic. At least, that is, if they happened to be looking at us at dinnertime on Friday or if they saw us getting ready to go to church on Sunday. But what about those people who worked with us on Monday? It was 9:30 A.M. when Fred called a meeting of the sales team. The publishing house was a small one and most of the employees were used to handling whatever came their way, even if it was not technically “their job”. Usually they worked together well enough. But today was not a “usual” day. A major client was pulling out and jobs were on the line. Fred announced that two of the people who had worked on the project would be laid off. Everyone held their breath. They had all worked on that project. Who would be the unlucky ones? Chairs shifted as people moved away from one another. Eyes were cast down, no one wanting to draw attention to themselves. Their thoughts were churning as each began to plan how they might ensure that their job would not be one of those to be eliminated. “What right does Fred have to do a thing like this?” “I’m calling my lawyer.” “What customers can I take with me if I’m let go?” “From within…their hearts come evil thoughts…theft…greed, malice, deceit…envy…” The feelings that rise up in us at times like this have little to do with what we eat on Friday. “This people honors me with their lips…” And we probably don’t look much different to the people who see us at Church on Sunday. The real question is, what do people see when they look at us on Monday?

FAITH FIRST

September 9, 2018 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 7:31-37

AGAIN J ESUS LEFT the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” — And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

After reading the Gospel aloud, in unison, those gathered reflect on the following questions: • In this passage, what word, phrase or image struck you? • How does that speak to you personally? • How does that speak to our community at St. Athanasius? And to the wider Church? Conclude by praying the Our Father together.
