What was your favorite scouting experience? Why? Completing a trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in 2009 and earning the coveted Philmont arrowhead patch. It was the culmination of a long journey of personal transformation. Why did you attend Wood Badge? I always wanted to be part of a cult and sing, but was rejected by Up With People. Why should someone attend Wood Badge? Wood Badge is a fantastic example of experiential learning. It models Baden-Powell’s “game with a purpose” and helps both participants and staff gain a better appreciation of Scouting. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) Today—every day is a blessing and gift. What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? “I love you.” What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? The late Daniel T. Taussig, my boyhood Scoutmaster with Troop 417 in Walton Hills. Along with my parents and religious leaders, Mr. Taussig instilled in me the values that have served as my lifelong moral com- pass. Scouting Experience, adult: 15 years total: Pack 53 (Athens, OH) – involved parent, Pack 67 – Den Leader, Mrs. Cubmaster, Com- mittee chair, Troop 223 – Committee member, Crew 4929 – Committee chair, Advisor What was your favorite scouting experience? Why? I was presented with a Mentor Pin at an Eagle Court of Honor, by my son Justin. I never thought that I had that much positive impact on him that he would present me with such an honor. This was eye opening for me, an inspiration, and I am still so honored by his act. Another experience worth mentioning was witnessing my younger son Jared being carried in by his two friends doing the fireman carry to his Eagle Court of Honor! Absolutely priceless! Why did you attend Wood Badge? To network and learn from other people – not only from the course staff, but from other adult leaders as participants. Why should someone attend Wood Badge? Same as above, to network and learn from other people. To potentially make very close friends (like I did!) and have a blast doing so! Also, attending Wood Badge can make you a better spouse and parent as well as a better employee/employer. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) On our Crew 4929 trip this past summer, we had to manage the challenge of two-thirds of our people getting sick on our backpacking trek, while not aborting the entire trip. One of the youth in the crew has NO scouting background at all. When she was leaving for home, she told me that she was so happy at how everything went because she now had something interesting to write about in her college essays. That made me feel so much better because before that, I was feeling extremely disappointed at how many changes needed to be managed. She changed my outlook entirely! What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? When my son, Justin, was interviewing for a college scholarship, he was asked who his idol was. He could have said anybody throughout history, but he told the panel that I was his idol. I am still deeply honored that he thought that! What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? I admire all of my Scouter friends – each of them brings a different skill or experi- ence to the table – skills or experiences that I don’t have. Favorite band: I have no favorite band, I’m pretty open minded with music. I find I listen mostly to rock & roll and alternative- style music. I recently discovered a couple of old bands – Death Cab for Cutie and Galactic. I also recently listened to a song by Stephen Stills that I like – Treetop Flyer; I love acoustic guitar. Least favorite band: I have no least favorite band. I’m not a big fan of country or RAP, but I’m pretty open minded. Why do you volunteer for the Boy Scouts? I have fun working with the youth AND the adults!

What was your favorite scouting experience? Why? Attending Scout training at Philmont. It was an amazing experience. My fami- ly was able to attend as well, and it was incredible to spend some quality family time exploring the areas around Philmont. Why did you attend Wood Badge? I wanted a challenge. I wanted something more from my Scouting experience. I was hungry to learn more and grow in my Scouting experience. Why should someone attend Wood Badge? To gain a better understanding of the Scouting program, and to improve their leader- ship skills. It will be a life-changing experience. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) Hmmm…… this is a difficult one. There are so many good things to choose from. I really enjoyed spending time with my family hiking Garden of the Gods park and driving up Pike’s Peak in Colorado. We got to pan for gem stones along the way up to the top of Pikes Peak. It was great to spend quality time with my family in such a beautiful setting. A close second is the day my older son, Matt, became an Eagle Scout. What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? That I have a kind, gentle and giving spirit. What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? Bernie Mentius. He has unselfishly given of his time, finances and talents to the BSA for over 20 years. He is always willing to help in any and every way he can. He is an optimist and always sees the positive in any situation. The most amazing aspect of his volunteer service is that he has never had a son or daughter in any Scouting program.

6 He gives to the BSA because he truly believes in the program. Favorite band: Casting Crowns Least favorite band: Black-eyed Peas Why do you volunteer for the Boy Scouts? I started volunteering when my sons were in Tiger Cub dens. I became to believe in the program, and now I volunteer because I love seeing the youth and adults grow, develop and learn in this amazing organization.

Why? Camping with my boys. Watching them learn new things and gain confidence. The laughter, and songs. Why did you attend Wood Badge? Wanted to learn more about scouting and becoming a better leader Why should someone attend Wood Badge? Leadership. When you are trying to lead anything or be apart of the group you have a better understanding of how things work and how to guide others. You get to meet other scouters, make friends and bonds and have fun. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) Every year at Confirmation, watching the students I teach receive the sacrament. What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? That I was a motivator What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? Gary Musselman – he believes in scouting. He has a joy that he passes along. He encourages other people to be there best. He wants helps to have the program be the best that it can be. Favorite band: Not just one, right now I like most Country Music Least favorite band: I don’t have one, just not as much in to rap. Why do you volunteer for the Boy Scouts? For my two boys, at least that is why I started. Now it has grown to the entire pack. Watching them learn and grow. Seeing how they have experienced so much and had fun while they are doing it.

Name: Jenn Newrones Wood Badge Course as Participant: C4-440-13 Critter: Beaver Courses staffed, along with position: This will be my first course as a staff member. I am happy to be serv- ing as one of the scribes. Scouting Experience, youth: I was a Brownie, but quit because I didn’t want to cross over the bridge to Girl Scouts in front of everyone. Scouting Experience, adult: I started in scouting in 2004 when my son was a tiger. I have filled many positions from parent to lead- er. I am currently a COR for Pack and Troop 137 and I am the advancement chairman for the Tinkers Creek District. What was your favorite scouting experience? Why? My favorite scouting experience was Webelos resident camp with my boys in 2012. I had 3 boys that didn’t swim and were terrified of the water. They were deathly afraid of working on the aquanaut pin, but they still got in the water and faced their fears. All three earned that pin and it was my proudest moment as a leader. Why did you attend Wood Badge? I attended wood badge to better myself as a leader and to learn about ways to make our pack and troop better for the boys. Why should someone attend Wood Badge? It is a fun way to better your unit. You learn so much and it helps you in scouting and your daily life. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) My best days would be the days that my sons were adopted. It was the official day I became a mom and it has been the best, most rewarding job I could ever ask for. (It’s not the day they were born!) What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? I had another answer for this, but I had to change it the other day when my son said to me, “Thank you for putting me in scouting. It really got me ready for my future and I understand why it was so im- portant now.” I’d say that’s one of the nicest things I’ve heard. What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? I admire all scouters. I love the scouting program and I think that the time and dedication that people put into it is amazing. I also admire my son. He’s come so far and he’s working so hard to accomplish his goals. I’m one proud mom! Favorite band: I don’t like any one band in particular. I’ll listen to just about anything… I prefer Christmas music the most! Least favorite band: I’ll give anything a try. I would have to say my least favorite type of music would probably be hard rock though. Why do you volunteer for the Boy Scouts? I volunteer because I believe in the program. I’ve seen what it does for the kids and fam- ilies that are involved. These boys are the future and I want to do all I can to help make the world a better, more peaceful place to live.

7 Name: Ed Roth Wood Badge Course as Participant: C4-C440-14 Critter: Owl Courses staffed, along with position: N/A Scouting Experience, youth: Cub Scouts Scouting Experience, adult: My oldest son is a Bear, and I have been Cubmaster for two years What was your favorite scouting experience? Why? In a general sense, my favorite Scouting experience has been watching my son grow and develop. I enjoy watching his enthusiasm when he's getting ready for a Scouting event and the excitement he has when he’s there with his friends. Personally, I remember working on my Pinewood Derby Car with my Dad at our kitchen table (still have the car), and hosting Den meetings with my Mom. Why did you attend Wood Badge? The prior two Cubmasters from my Pack attended Wood Badge and highly recommended it. In addition to the Scouting aspects, they explained how it helped them with work and family. So, after giving it some thought and seeing the interest my son expressed in Scouting, I figured the Wood Badge would be good training and give me a better chance of helping my sons get the most out of Scouts. Why should someone attend Wood Badge? Speaking on my own experience, Wood Badge gave me a better understanding of Scouting and how to be a better leader. It provided the opportunity to meet and be with people of varying Scouting experience and a chance to share ideas and stories. And, practically speaking, I don’t know of any other training that has almost a 2:1 ratio of students to trainers and combines ‘classroom’ learning with hands-on application at a price of less than $50/day. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) Aside from walking out of the father-daughter dance with my six year old daughter shouting ‘best night ever’, one of my best days was this past summer. It was the first major vacation my wife and I have taken since having our four children. We spent a week just outside the Great Smokey Mountains, and one day we spent hanging out in the mountains. In the morning we hiked up to see Laurel Falls (always fun com- bining steep drop-offs with fleeting attention spans). We cooked out in Chimney Tops park and spent some time climbing and playing on the boulders alongside the river before traversing up to Clingmans Dome in the afternoon. It was a blast spending some quality time with my family. What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? You care too much. What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? All the members in my Wood Badge patrol team. They started volunteering to be with their boys and to help them along the way. We formed a great team, had fun, and taught each other a lot. Favorite band: The Killers Least favorite band: Red Hot Chili Peppers Why do you volunteer for the Boy Scouts? I have fun seeing the boys’ eyes light up when they accomplish a goal or are recognized for doing something good, and I think it’s important to have strong leaders who see beyond themselves.

Name: Brad Miklosovic Wood Badge Course as Participant: C4-440-13 Critter: Owl Courses staffed, along with position: C4-440-15 Head Scribe Scouting Experience, youth: Cub and Boy Scout Scouting Experience, adult: Cubmaster, assistant cubmaster, assistant scoutmaster, Chapter Advi- sor Cuyahoga Lodge What was your favorite scouting experience? Why? Watching an entire camp of several troops come to attention when our troop started our flag raising ceremony. The look of respect other scoutmasters gave our scouts for having a flag raising and lowering, when no other troop was having such ceremonies, made be proud to lead such fine young men. Why did you attend Wood Badge? Because I was asked. Why should someone attend Wood Badge? To learn what scouting is about and to remind themselves what is was like when they were a scout. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) When I finally got my degree. What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? Have you lost weight? What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? Don Young, Dave Volek, John Hogan, Jim Van Gilder, et al. These are scouters who continue to volunteer and serve even though their children are no longer scouts. Favorite band: Led Zeppelin, The Smithereens, The Sex Pistols, Cross-Eyed QT, Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters Least favorite band: The Michael Stanley Band, Taylor Swift, Anything country or rap. Why do you volunteer for the Boy Scouts? To help young men became well rounded young adults.

8 Name: Keith Swauger Wood Badge Course as Participant: C-11-08 Critter: Buffalo Courses staffed, along with position: C4-440-14 (Troop Guide) Scouting Experience, youth: Cub scouts and boy scouts (10 years 297) Scouting Experience, adult: Asst. Cub master, Asst. Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, outdoor activity chair, OA brotherhood, OA Program Advisor. What was your favorite scouting experience? Why? The one the day after tomorrow. Because it will be new and fresh. Why did you attend Wood Badge? Every scout deserves a trained leader and I want to give them the best. Why should someone attend Wood Badge? Aside from all the practicable knowledge just to be able to surround yourself with so much positive energy is very fulfilling. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) I don't look at the world as a competition, one day beating another. Everyday is different and I cherish the memories of the past but look to the future. What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? You are kind. What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? Those that give because they care for others, not the ones that want to be in con- trol. They are the true leaders. Favorite band: Pink Floyd Least favorite band: Why do you volunteer for the Boy Scouts? “for these things my heart will yearn, to these things I must return”

Name: John Zastawnik Wood Badge Course as Participant: C4-440-14 Critter: Fox Courses staffed, along with position: First time staffer Scouting Experience, youth: Cub Scout through Webelos Scouting Experience, adult: Den Leader Tiger through Webelos (GCC 217), then ASM and now SM (GCC 361). Also Advisor of recently created co-ed Crew (GT 2309). What was your favorite scouting experience? Why? A few members of Troop 361, including my son, completed a 50 miler last year. We hiked the Burton section of the Buckeye Trail and finished by walking into Lake Erie at Mentor Headlands as the end of the 50th mile. We were also joined on the last day by one of the Cubs who is now a member of the Troop. It was a great accomplish- ment for the first time hikers. Why did you attend Wood Badge? I am always up for the challenge of honing my Scouting and leadership skills. As they say, po- body’s nerfect; I am always able to gain new perspective on even the most fundamental skills. It is also a great way to meet new and old seasoned Scouters throughout the Council and beyond. Why should someone attend Wood Badge? I believe Wood Badge is an opportunity to be exposed to the entirety of the Scouting program in ways that a person may not normally encounter. It’s not often that a person is asked to view the world from the very different perspectives of the youngest Cub through eldest Venturer in less than a week’s time. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) I have had too many positive experiences to select a single one as my ‘best day’. I have served on active duty in the military, traversed the country repeatedly, cir- cumnavigated the world five times, and started a family just to name a few of the highlights so far. Plus, I truly believe the best is yet to come! What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? That I am too humble to answer that type of question. Oh, and that I (sometimes) have a good sense of humor. What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? I admire all Scouters for their work in the program. It is great to see Moms and Dads, parents and grandparents active in Scouting and passing their knowledge and experience to the next generation. We all help to build the collective experiences, morals, and values of these young Scouts brick by brick, meeting by meeting, and outing by out- ing. Favorite band: I listen to a very wide range of music, from Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa, Bach to Brooks and Dunn, and Meatloaf to Metallica. It’s a pretty wild ride through my headphones some days. Least favorite band: I dislike the current trend of manufactured pop artists. Please have a direction and a shred of talent, not just major label backing, cute posters, and a flock of teeny boppers in the crowd. I had hoped we had progressed past the boy band stage in this world but I guess there’s always a hair band with a ballad being dreamt up somewhere. Why do you volunteer for the Boy Scouts? I enjoy empowering the new Scouts and watching them realize what they can accom- plish. It is great to see them becoming self-reliant, and even better to see them take the new members under their wings and begin to help them along the same path of discovery.

I learned a great deal about work ethics, teamwork and met some outstanding scouts and scouters and have fond memories from that experience. Why did you attend Wood Badge? To gain additional knowledge in becoming better in my scouting position. Why should someone attend Wood Badge? To obtain the tools needed to become better in your scouting position. To make new and lasting frienships. What was your best day? The most recent was completing my PHD at Commissioner College which took 4 years to complete. What was the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you? We recently had our first Eagle Court of Honor in our Troop (2 Eagle Scouts) both boys gave me a mentor pin and said some very kind words about me. What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? I have had many Adults that I have admired in my scouting tenure. I have 3 that I have admired the most: My father, who brought me into scouting and was an Adult Leader for 12 years. He was my inspiration as a youth. Gary Musselman who brought me back into scouting and was my mentor in Commissioner service for many years. I also worked with him on many District and Council activities. Carol Doe who has taught me a wealth of knowledge about Venturing and scouting in general. I will be serving on my fifth Wood Badge Staff with her. She is always there for me and others who need help and guidance. Favorite band: I have many, my favorite type of music is Rock & roll from the 1960's & 1970's era. Least favorite band: I have many, my least favorite type of music is Hip Hop, I do not understand the lyrics. Why do you volunteer for the Boy Scouts? When I was a youth in scouting, I was fortunate to have very dedicated Adult Leaders in my Troop. When I reached the rank of Eagle, I made a promise to myself to give back to scouting as an Adult Leader to the youth the same opportunity that I had. It's all about the youth.

What was your favorite scouting experience? Why? This past summer, our Crew traveled to the U.P. of Michigan to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore with Crew 4929 for a 50 mile hike along the shores of Lake Superior. After a long drive, the first two days went as planned. However, day three turned into one of the most miserable days imagi- nable. Temperatures in the 90’s, blood thirsty flies, and a soft sandy trail followed by a contagious virus that affected each one of us, one by one, until there were only 6 or 7 “healthies” out of 20. The difficult day was followed by a long night, and the next day found us heading back to a point where we could be plucked from the trail. After a day of rest and recuperation, we headed back to the Lake Trail and spent the entire day in awe from the beautiful sights of the Hemlock and Cedar forests and the spectacular views of the blue green crystal clear water and the pictured rock cliffs. What made it even more special was that I was able to share this all with both my son Drew and my daughter Halle. In spite of the challenges of the trip, it is easily my most favorite scouting experi- ence. Why did you attend Wood Badge? The Troop’s Scoutmaster took the course in ’08 and spoke highly of it. We thought it would be beneficial to speak the same language that the Scouts were after they attended NYLT. Why should someone attend Wood Badge? The person who should take Woodbadge is the scouter that is looking for proven lead- ership skills taught and presented in a way that allows you to practice them within the framework of a model troop setting, along with a big spoonful of fun. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) My best day, aside from the two listed above was the day we traveled to California, made our way to Yosemite and stood on the edge of the trail admiring the awe- some beauty of Yosemite Valley spread out before us. What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? It’s been said I am rarely in a bad mood. I wouldn’t say I put a conscious

10 effort into doing so, but I believe it is important to be as happy as you can. What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? Hands down…… John Hogan. First time I saw a bear in the wild. Why did you attend Wood Badge? I thought the badge and beads looked cool, didn’t know about the ticket though… Why should someone attend Wood Badge? Great training for those who have been drawn in as “Lifers” Many of the principals taught here can be applied to family life and your profession. Six days of intense training for $220? Such a deal! What was your best day? Outside of my 2 Sons becoming Eagle Scouts I would say it was Day 1 on last years’ course… Hyped up on coffee and Adrenaline and it was “Showtime”! What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? Actually the biggest compliment I’ve ever received was in an e-mail from John O’Brian, an Eagle Scout from my Troop. He was attending West Point and had just finished Basic Training. He told me a sto- ry of being out, field training in England, on a night where it was pouring down rain and so dark that their night goggles didn’t work. He says he got through the night remembering me, standing in the middle of our summer campsite soaking wet, during a 3 day long thunderstorm, promising that I would make sure everyone would make it home, safe, dry and warm! Crazy counts, some- times! What Scouter do you admire/idolize and why? Three People: 1. My Father who was awarded his Eagle Badge the day before D-Day. 2. My old Scoutmaster Pete Petras. (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? That I had great balance in my life between family, work, and outside life (like Scouting) What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? Gary Musselman. Name: David Schoeffler Wood Badge Course as Participant: C4-440-13 Critter: Buffalo Courses staffed, along with position: First time. C4-440-15 Troop Guide Scouting Experience, youth: Cub Scout and Boy Scout. Achieved rank of Eagle Scout Scouting Experience, adult: Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelo 1 and 2 Leader, Troop Outdoor Leader Activity Chair, Committee Chair (Present) What was your favorite scouting experience? Why? As a Boy Scout, it was the Troop’s camp out on Put in Bay. The Troop took a Ford Tri-Motor plane over to the island. It was called the Tin Goose. It was both exciting and scary. When I saw the exact plane hanging in the National Muse- um of Air and Space in Washington DC many years later, I felt old. As an adult, it was watching my Son organize and execute his eagle project. He completed it on his own, doing it his way with me giving advice only. Why did you attend Wood Badge? I attended the Wood Badge breakfast because our Charter representative Mike arranged a table. I had no intention of attending the course. When I saw the number of graduates at the breakfast and the commitment they showed to the course, I was very impressed. I had never seen anything like it before-both in scouting and my personal life. I decided at that moment that maybe I don’t know everything and that there are things that I can learn that can make me a better leader.

13 Why should someone attend Wood Badge? Because you do not know everything. As adults, continuing education is the best way to stay challenged and fresh. It is motivating because it keeps you constantly thinking and improving yourself. Wodbadge does this from a standpoint and personal standpoint. Both worlds can be improved by taking this training. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy). The day I graduated from Pur- due University. My dad told me how proud he was of me. What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? “Dave is a good mentor “ What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? Mr Petrovic. He was an adult leader when I was a Scout in Troop 620, Gesu Church in University Heights. He was an amazing cook and leader. All the boys respected him and he cooked unbelievable meals for the adults. Favorite band: The Replacements. When I went away to college, I brought all of my vinyl records. Mostly classic rock with some late 70’s music. I met some guys that were into new music and totally opened a new world to me. One of those bands was The Re- placements. This band was from Minneapolis and they created a sound that I had never heard. Least favorite band: ACDC. All of their songs sound the same.

Scouting Experience, adult: Tiger Cub Dad, Den Leader, Bear, Webelos, Cub Master, Asst. Scout- master, District Roundtable Commissioner, District Commissioner, District Chairman, Unit Com- missioner. What was your favorite scouting experience? Cubmaster/Den leader. Why? This is where it all be- gins. It’s the fun stuff, where we get to instill fond memories. Laughs and a great scouting experience to our youth as well as to the adults. I learned early on when the kids and their parents are having fun, they want to be involved. From there it is easy. Why did you attend Wood Badge? I was invited; I knew nothing about the program nobody really talked or promoted it until the new 20th Century Program was unveiled. Why should someone attend Wood Badge? First you come because you want to. Secondly you come with an open mind ready to participate and discover yourself. This program is designed to bring out the best in each individual. We all have so much to dis- cover about ourselves that we never knew what we were capable of doing. Wood Badge allows us to experience that in a fun way. If you like to laugh this course is for you. What was your best day? I have had 8 of them. In each one the judge or jury found the defendant guilty of murder. The end of a difficult journey, a sense of relief for myself as well as the victim’s families.

14 What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? I faced the same defense attorney on 2 separate murder trials. After the second trial before we went to jury, He told me that my department had done a fantastic job and that the case was very clear and concise in what had happened. He stated I gave him no room to work and the outcome was never in doubt. He thanked me. And this was from the defense! What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? The mom or dad that I have not met, yet I have met them hundreds of times. These are the parents who get involved with their son or daughter. They are vested in the success of the unit and the program. These folks are all around you today. Thank you. Favorite band: My tastes are so varied from Abba to Zeppelin, I also enjoy country both the new “Outlaw Country” as well as the original outlaw Johnny Cash. Least favorite band: basically anything rap and most pop. If I can’t understand it, I won’t listen to it. Why do you volunteer for the Boy Scouts? Because the kids need people like us to do for their kids what they themselves will not do.

Name: Judy Poole Wood Badge Course as Participant: C4-440-13 Critter: (The Mighty) Eagle Courses staffed, along with position: C4-440-14 as Troop Guide, present course as Asst. Scribe and Chaplain Aide Scouting Experience, youth: none, although my three older siblings were in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. I did sell/deliver Girl Scout cookies with my sisters, does that count? Scouting Experience, adult: Tiger, Wolf, Bear & Webelos Den Leaders; Cubmaster; Popcorn Queen (i.e. – Kernel); Troop Committee Member; Scoutmaster; Unit Commissioner; Friend of Scouting Pre- senter. What was your favorite scouting experience? Why? I have loved watching My Three Sons (feel free to whistle TV show theme here) grow up through Scouting. I can distinctly remember some moments like when one of my sons took first place in the Pinewood Derby. I know that I have gone or done different activities with my boys in Scouts that they would have said “no” to if I asked them as their mom. It was okay because the den or pack was doing it. I have a group of five boys who are in my Troop (215 in Berea) who started Tigers together at age six and are still together at age 14. Why did you attend Wood Badge? To be honest, I have no real reason other than John Hogan asked me at some meeting or other. It was a quick sales pitch and I signed on and showed up knowing nothing about the course! Why should someone attend Wood Badge? Wow, there are so many reasons. The first reason is for the people you meet and the resources you gain from the diversity of the group. Wood Badge also pushes you as a Scout leader to grow and make a ticket that is going to benefit you and others. I remember leaving Wood Badge charged up after both weekends. Of course learning the material and the history of Scouting is a major part of Wood Badge too. What was your best day? (The day you got married or your kids were born do not count, too easy) I can remember floating on air two times besides the kids and the wedding. Once was when the high school band I was directing in a music contest received “straight 1’s”, meaning the highest rating from four judges at a music contest. The second time was when I bought my first house as a young single chick. My realtor called at 2 a.m. and told me the deal had gone through. I was bouncing with excitement but could not call anyone (at 2 a.m. a phone call means somebody has died!). So I ended up staying up all night cleaning my apartment. What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? Hmmm, I know people have said nice things about me but nothing seems to be leaping out right now. I will just tell you that I have a mind that remembers numbers and what people were wearing etc., long ago and other needless trivia. One of my friends was asked a question about when something happened and she turned to me and said “ask Judy, she’s good on dates.” What scouter do you admire/idolize and why? In high school I took private flute lessons. My teacher’s husband was always talking about Boy Scouts, Tinnerman, Philmont, National Jamborees. This guy did it all. If you are an East Sider and have been in Scouts a good number of years, you might know Ray Hendershot. Ray was a solid talker. He had story after story. Ray and his wife Joy were just good people. They really supported my in high school and college endeavors. Ray often drove me back and forth from college (Baldwin-Wallace) and home (Euclid). Favorite band: I don’t really have one. I listen to a wide variety of music. My favorite band would probably be the Eastman Wind Ensemble recordings directed by Frederick Fennell. The Cleveland Orchestra is not too bad either. Least favorite band: Any band that you can’t understand the lyrics. Any band who has a screaming singer. Why do you volunteer for the Boy Scouts? I entered Scouting because of my oldest son. It was a great way to have a ready-made outing with my son. Two years later when my twin sons would have been Tigers the pack was of course looking for Leaders. My husband suggested that “we” should be leaders because we had two sons joining. So “we” did. Immediately my husband’s work responsibilities changed and the “we” became “I”. However, that was eight years ago. Now I am Scouting for me. Scouting has provided many unique opportunities for me. I have met very fun and wonderful people along the way. It is a chance for me to do things very different than music teacher and mom. I know that I will be another who stays in Scouting after my boys have aged out.
