Two years ago, an innocent question landed in my inbox: “How far is Albuquerque from Santa Fe?” I liked Tom and Enid Schantz, so I an- swered their email quickly, “It’s close—fifty minutes if you’re married to the speed limit.” Their next response, much longer this time, explained that the hotel for the original location of LCC 2011 had fallen through…. I stopped reading long enough to hit myself on the forehead. I should have remembered that Tom and Enid were major players in the Left Coast Crime world. My eyes wandered to the end of their message. It concluded with: “Would you consider chairing the convention in Santa Fe?” Oh, man. Looking back, I know that the desire to share my love of New Mexico with the mystery community I adore blinded me to the amount of work chairing an all-volunteer convention would require.     SOB SISTERS: THE IMAGE OF THE FEMALE JOURNALIST IN POPULAR CULTURE By Joe Saltzman Director, Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) Joe Saltzman 2003 The Image of the Female Journalist in Popular Culture revolves around a dichotomy never quite resolved. The female journalist faces an ongoing dilemma: How to incorporate the masculine traits of journalism essential for success – being aggressive, self-reliant, curious, tough, ambitious, cynical, cocky, unsympathetic – while still being the woman society would like her to be – compassionate, caring, loving, maternal, sympathetic. Female reporters and editors in fiction have fought to overcome this central contradiction throughout the 20th century and are still fighting the battle today. Not much early fiction featured newswomen. Before 1880, there were few newspaperwomen and only about five novels written about them.1 Some real-life newswomen were well known – Margaret Fuller, Nelly Bly (Elizabeth Cochrane), Annie Laurie (Winifred Sweet or Winifred Black), Jennie June (Jane Cunningham Croly) – but most female journalists were not permitted to write on important topics. Front-page assignments, politics, finance and sports were not usually given to women. Top newsroom positions were for men only. Novels and short stories of Victorian America offered the prejudices of the day: Newspaper work, like most work outside the home, was for men only. Women were supposed to marry, have children and stay home. To become a journalist, women had to have a good excuse – perhaps a dead husband and starving children. Those who did write articles from home kept it to themselves. Few admitted they wrote for a living. Women who tried to have both marriage and a career flirted with disaster.2 The professional woman of the period was usually educated, single, and middle or upper class.

    Ellery Queen Master Detective Ellery Queen was one of two brainchildren of the team of cousins, Fred Dannay and Manfred B. Lee. Dannay and Lee entered a writing contest, envisioning a stuffed‐shirt author called Ellery Queen who solved mysteries and then wrote about them. Queen relied on his keen powers of observation and deduction, being a Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson rolled into one. But just as Holmes needed his Watson ‐‐ a character with whom the average reader could identify ‐‐ the character Ellery Queen had his father, Inspector Richard Queen, who not only served in that function but also gave Ellery the access he needed to poke his nose into police business. Dannay and Lee chose the pseudonym of Ellery Queen as their (first) writing moniker, for it was only natural ‐‐ since the character Ellery was writing mysteries ‐‐ that their mysteries should be the ones that Ellery Queen wrote. They placed first in the contest, and their first novel was accepted and published by Frederick Stokes. Stokes would go on to release over a dozen "Ellery Queen" publications. At the beginning, "Ellery Queen" the author was marketed as a secret identity. Ellery Queen (actually one of the cousins, usually Dannay) would appear in public masked, as though he were protecting his identity. The buying public ate it up, and so the cousins did it again. By 1932 they had created "Barnaby Ross," whose existence had been foreshadowed by two comments in Queen novels. Barnaby Ross composed four novels about aging actor Drury Lane. After it was revealed that "Barnaby Ross is really Ellery Queen," the novels were reissued bearing the Queen name.

    King County Library System Director’s Report April 2013 GOVERNMENT RELATIONS As the process continues, progress is being made on the Renton Library project. KCLS held a public meeting on March 26 to present the design for the new library over the Cedar River. Even though some of the 150 attendees objected to breakout stations, staff gathered good input from those who participated as well as from the audience comment period at the end of the meeting. Miller-Hull architects identified some of the main concerns raised by the public and addressed them in a follow-up presentation to the Renton City Council on April 15. Council members responded well to the design changes and the City has indicated it will consider increasing the budget to build a larger library that is closer to the size of the existing building. It is anticipated that the City Council will make a decision on the schematic design and project budget at its meeting on Monday, April 29. At the April 15 Renton City Council meeting, KCLS requested that if the City considers increasing the budget for the downtown library that it not be increased at the expense of the Renton Highlands Library. Council members agreed and asked staff to bring back plans for increasing the budget without impinging on the Highlands project. The City of Renton and its housing developer have made enough progress on the project that library design and planning is finally able to move forward. KCLS is scheduled to present schematic design and budget estimates to the Renton City Council on May 14.
