Ocharan) RESEARCH INTERESTS I am a behavioral ecologist, interested in the micro- and macroevolutionary processes that promote diversity. My research has explored questions on the evolution of color signals, color vision, and flight morphology. I am particularly interested in understanding the evolution of color signals, how they are perceived by intended and unintended receivers and the role of these audiences in driving population and species divergence. I also study the evolution of flight morphology because wings are large conspicuous body surfaces that can be also used as motion signal vehicles for intra- and interspecific communication. -

Since the last publication of the inventory list for dragonflies and damselflies within the boundary of Andalas University’s Limau Manis Campus Complex, Padang, in 2018, the study has been continuously conducted. In this study we add five new species of Odonata for Andalas University’s Limau Manis Campus Complex, with one species Drepanosticta cf. bispina requires further investigation and elaboration on its existence in West Sumatra. We also corrected the identification of Heliocypha fenestrata into H. angusta angusta. With this addition, Andalas University’s Limau Manis Campus Complex currently resides for 32 species and 9 families of Odonata, increasing from previously 27 species and 8 families. Signature Date: 01/07/15 Name: Dr Eleanor John Designation: Principal Supervisor ABSTRACT Samoan volcanism is tectonically controlled and is generated by tension-stress activities associated with the sharp bend in the Pacific Plate (Northern Terminus) at the Tonga Trench. The Samoan island chain dominated by a mixture of shield and post-erosional volcanism activities. The closed basin structures of volcanoes such as the Crater Lake Lanoto enable the entrapment and retention of a near-complete sedimentary record, itself recording its eruptive history. Crater Lanoto is characterised as a compound monogenetic and short-term volcano. A high proportion of primary tephra components were found in a core extracted from Crater Lake Lanoto show that Crater Lanoto erupted four times (tephra bed-1, 2, 3, and 4). -

A Visitor’s Field Guide to Savai’i – Touring Savai’i with a Geologist A Visitor's Field Guide to Savai’i Touring Savai'i with a Geologist Warren Jopling Page 1 A Visitor’s Field Guide to Savai’i – Touring Savai’i with a Geologist ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND THIS ARTICLE Tuapou Warren Jopling is an Australian geologist who retired to Savai'i to grow coffee after a career in oil exploration in Australia, Canada, Brazil and Indonesia. Travels through Central America, the Andes and Iceland followed by 17 years in Indonesia gave him a good understanding of volcanology, a boon to later educational tourism when explaining Savai'i to overseas visitors and student groups. His 2014 report on Samoa's Geological History was published in booklet form by the Samoa Tourism Authority as a Visitor's Guide - a guide summarising the main geological events that built the islands but with little coverage of individual natural attractions. This present article is an abridgement of the 2014 report and focuses on Savai'i. It is in three sections; an explanation of plate movement and hotspot activity for visitors unfamiliar with plate tectonics; a brief summary of Savai'i's geological history then an island tour with some geologic input when describing the main sites. It is for nature lovers who would appreciate some background to sightseeing. Progress Report for 2009 surveys Zhang Haomiao* *PH D student at the Department of Entomology, College of Natural Resources and Environment, South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou 510642, China. Email: [email protected] Introduction Three families in the superfamily Calopterygoidea occur in China, viz. the Calo- pterygidae, Chlorocyphidae and Euphaeidae. They include numerous species that are distributed widely across South China, mainly in streams and upland running waters at moderate altitudes. To date, our knowledge of Chinese spe- cies has remained inadequate: the taxonomy of some genera is unresolved and no attempt has been made to map the distribution of the various species and genera. This project is therefore aimed at providing taxonomic (including on larval morphology), biological, and distributional information on the super- family in South China. In 2009, two series of surveys were conducted to Southwest China-Guizhou and Yunnan Provinces. The two provinces are characterized by karst limestone arranged in steep hills and intermontane basins. The climate is warm and the weather is frequently cloudy and rainy all year. This area is usually regarded as one of biodiversity “hotspot” in China (Xu & Wilkes, 2004). Many interesting species are recorded, the checklist and photos of these sur- veys are reported here. And the progress of the research on the superfamily Calopterygoidea is appended. Methods Odonata were recorded by the specimens collected and identified from pho- tographs. 'IMPRESS Project' And
“To improve the sustainable and costs-effective utilization of indigenous renewable energy resources for energy production in Samoa” The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment through a collaboration between the ‘IMPRESS Project’ and the ‘2 Million Tree Planting Campaign’ under the Forestry Division; will be conducting a Tree Planting Event on Friday 14th June 2019. It is part of a three (4) days tree planting campaign starting from 12th June (refer to program attached). A tree has various components that are valuable to our communities and the environment. Apart from the ecological services in which it provides, a tree is also considered a source of Renewable Energy as it can produce Electricity. But how? The IMPRESS Project is constructing the very first ever Biomass Gasification Plant at Afolau. It is a technology of its kind which converts stored potential energy contained in trees to electric energy; making Biomass Energy the fifth (5th) source of Renewable Energy available in Samoa. This Gasification plant will assist our electricity sector in meeting its current target goal and Nationally Determinded Contributions (NDC) of “100% Renewable Energy target for Electricity generation by 2025.” By harvesting only invasive species that are available at certain plots of Afolau. The purpose of the Tree Planting event on 14th June is to showcase the various importance of trees and to offset harvest operations which will take place in Afolau. The Tree Planting event will take place at Faleolo Reserve (refer to diagrams attached). Registrations of all participants will start at 9am (refer to program attached). An estimate of 75 students altogether from five (5) Schools will be participating in this event. -
