Musings From Our Pastoral Minister

At Mass this past Sunday, as the lector read the names of our dead, I was struck by the length of the list, even before Father John stated it in his homily. After the initial feeling of numbness, I was overwhelmed by deep sadness and then anger—so many lives lost. And then there’s the loss of our lives as we knew them, the uncertainty of the future—the attack on the Capital last week. So much loss, both individually and collectively. I suddenly remembered an article I read in the Har- vard Business Review—of all places—last March entitled “That Discomfort You’re Feeling is Grief.” Was that really ten months ago?

In the article, grief expert Kessler speaks of grief as multiple feelings we must manage and goes on to identify Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s five classic stages of loss: denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, acceptance, and adds a sixth—meaning. It’s important to note that the stages of grief (like the stages of change) are not linear. Grief, like life, is a messy process. We’d like it to be neat and orderly, but it rarely is. Although we may experience all the stages, the way we experience them is different for each person and for each loss.

Our grief is complicated and it’s compounded by our collective trauma. The trauma of hurt, suf- fering, fear—of loneliness and social isolation. It is unprecedented. The antidote? Love. Love and compassion, hope and connection. Love is the answer.

We must first remember our God who loves us and who is with us always. In these, our darkest days, God’s love offers us light and hope. Just as in winter we gain a little bit of light each day, so must we allow God’s light to brighten our spirits. Then there is the love of family and friends, the love of community. Remember Jesus’s teachings to love one another.

We must pray. There are so many different ways to pray and I invite you to be creative and experi- ment. There is, of course, traditional prayer—for many of us the rosary provides comfort and community, even if the experience of community these days is on tv. There is conversation with God, writing, music, movement, being in nature—to name a few. What fills your heart with peace and joy?

We must connect—be it through a phone call, a card, a letter. We are so blessed in our Saint Cecilia community to have the technical resources to reach out to so many people in so many ways. Is it a challenge to change the way we connect? Yes— but as I wrote last month (was it really only a month ago?), we beautifully imperfect human beings are resilient. We are resilient and we have the abil- ity to learn, to change, to grow. Remember Dr. Lucy Hone’s words that it is possible to live and grieve at the same time. It all starts with a breath. Remember to breathe.

I’d like to end with one of my favorites, the tried and true Seren- ity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen.
