THRICE AS NICE After averaging just 1.5 three-pointers per game last season, sophomore Asha Thomas is 13-22 from beyond the arc through the first five games of the 2016-17 season, averaging 3.3 three-pointers per game.

Since the start of last year, the Bears are 14-5 when Thomas makes multiple threes, compared to 6-12 when she hits one three or fewer.

DISHING AND SWISHING Mikayla Cowling has been stuffing the stat-sheet this season, putting up at least 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists in three of her last four games. The junior entered the season with just two career 15-5-5 outings.

Cowling dished out a season-best eight assists on Friday against San Francisco and has five or more assists in every game this season, the longest streak of her career.

As a team, Cal is averaging 19.8 assists per game on the season and 67% (99-148) of the Bears’ field goals have been assisted. Oregon is the only team in the Pac-12 with a higher assist-to-field goal ratio and higher assist per game average.

THE POLLS ARE IN The Golden Bears are predicted to finish sixth in the Pac-12 this season, according to both the preseason Pac-12 Coaches Poll and the Pre- season Media Poll. Both the media and coaches predicted UCLA to win the conference crown, the Bruins gathering 13 first-place votes in the media poll and eight in the coaches’ poll.

Cal has received votes every week in both the USA Today and Associated Press polls.

OH BABY! A seemingly normal team meeting took an unexpected turn over the weekend when Gottlieb announced to the team that she and longtime partner Patrick Martin are expecting their first child this spring. Gottlieb is due in early May, though the pregnancy is not expected to interfere with her coaching duties.

SIGNED ON THE DOTTED LINE On Wednesday, November 9, the Bears inked two Southern California standouts on National Signing Day. Kianna Smith, a combo-guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., and Alaysia “Bird” Styles, a 6-2 wing from San Marcos, Calif., signed their Letters of Intent to join the Bears for the 2017- 18 season. Both players are five-star recruits and ranked top-10 nationally in their respective positions. Cal’s recruiting class is ranked 12th in the country, the Bears’ third top-15 class in the last four seasons.

THE BEARS ARE BACK Cal’s 2016-17 roster features eight letterwinners and four starters from last season’s squad, bringing valuable experience. Three players - Courtney Range, Mikayla Cowling, and Asha Thomas - started all 32 games for the Bears while Anigwe started 30 of 31 contests. Mo Mosley and Penina Davidson also provided the Bears with valuable minutes off the bench, both averaging more than 10 minutes per game.

NO. 1 IN THE CLASSROOM Generally considered the top-ranked public university in the world, Cal has held the No. 1 spot among the U.S. News & World Report rankings of public national universities for 18 consecutive years. In its Best Global Universities ratings, U.S. News places Cal fourth overall behind Harvard, MIT and Stanford
