Conservation Officer I Seasonal/Temporary- ELIGIBILITY LIST

Conservation Officers play an integral role in the province’s forest resource management. As part of this role the Conservation Officer I, under the supervision of a Senior Conservation Officer, will be responsible for harvesting of the timber resource, resource roads construction for extraction of the forest resource, and providing assistance to forest industries. As well the Conservation Officer will carry out silviculture programs, forest protection in the form of insect and pest control, forest fire protection and assisting in the enforcement of the Forestry Act.

These are technical positions involving assigned work predominantly in one of the following program areas, but may be required to assist in compliance/enforcement duties as the need arises:

Forest Fire Management: Responsibilities include determining initial attack and sustained action strategies on wildland fire operations; acting in various leadership roles under the Incident Command System; recording weather data observations for input into the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System; and assisting fire investigator with preliminary investigations on wildland fire causes.

Silviculture: Responsibilities include providing assistance in determining quality of contract work on Crown and Company silviculture operations; re-measuring permanent and temporary sample plots; carrying out regeneration surveys; undertaking traversing; correcting and mapping silviculture operations using GPS based technology; interpreting aerial photographs and transcribing data to maps.

Wooddale Tree Nursery: Responsibilities include monitoring seedling; germination procedures; crop inventory management; shipping; invoicing, cultural practices; pest management practices; worker productivity; plant genetics research; and other nursery related activities to ensure adherence to provincial silviculture standards and acceptable plant handling practices.

Industry Services: (Timber Scaling, Industry Analysis & Value Added Development) Responsibilities include assisting in data collection and analysis for developing log mass versus solid wood relationships; assisting in data collection and analysis of sawmill efficiency; and data collection and analysis of mill yard residues for fuel.

Insect Control Activity: Responsibilities include field and laboratory work for the Island-wide insect control activity; insect control programs; experimental trials and surveys for a variety of insect and disease pests.

QUALIFICATIONS: The above qualifications would normally have been acquired and demonstrated through related experience supplemented by graduation from a recognized two year technical program in a natural resource discipline with a focus on forestry. Equivalencies may be considered. Candidates must possess effective communication, organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills. A valid and Labrador Class 05 driver’s license is required. Extensive Travel may be required.

Offers of employment in the Forest Fire Suppression program will be contingent upon successful completion of a medical assessment and a physical ability test arranged by the Department.
