A special invitation As one of 13 Invitationals on the AJGA schedule, the Thunderbird International Junior is the first Invitational of the summer season. The criteria to receive an invitation includes: 2013 Rolex Junior All-America accolades, a top-10 finish at the 2013 Thunderbird International Junior, international invitees and Polo Golf Rankings. Eighteen international players from 16 countries will compete in 2014.

Origin story In partnership with the AJGA, the tournament was founded by Tournament Co-Chairmen Mike Kennedy and Del Cochran, and Honorary Chairman . “Fifteen years ago Phil [Mickelson] challenged The Thunderbirds and Grayhawk Golf Club to develop the most competitive junior golf tournament in the world,” Kennedy said. “His inspiration, oversight and generous annual financial support from the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation made that happen.” An AJGA alum and former National Chairman, Mickelson won 12 AJGA titles during his junior career.

Attempting to repeat history The field includes three past champions who look to repeat history. Nicole Morales of South Salem, N.Y., will return to defend her title and attempt to join Yueer Cindy Feng (2009-10) as the only repeat champion. The 2013 boys champion Jorge Garcia of Venezuela returns, as does the tournament’s youngest victor of Hobart, Okla., who won in 2011 at the age of 13. In 2013, Venezuela’s Jorge Garcia of Miami, took home his second- career AJGA victory by four-strokes. Nicole Morales of South Salem, N.Y., claimed her second AJGA Invitational after finishing at 5-under-par 211 at Grayhawk Golf Club. Both return to defend their titles. tournament history

Within the tournament’s history, event champions have continued their golf careers at the collegiate and professional level. The first Girls Division champion in 2000 was Virada Nirapathpongporn of Bangkok, Thailand, who won the women’s NCAA Championship in 2002, while playing for Duke and the U.S. Women’s Amateur in 2003. Belen Mozo of Cadiz, Spain, won the Thunderbird International Junior in 2004 and continued her career at the University of Southern California. She was a four-time NCAA All-American before joining the Symetra Tour and is in her third year on the LPGA Tour.

Past champions include current PGA TOUR player Ryan Moore, who won the Thunderbird International Junior in 2001. He followed his junior career at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas before turning professional and winning three PGA TOUR titles. A practice round will be held Friday, May 23, with tee times from 11:15 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Tournament play begins Saturday, May 24, with first- and second-round tee times from 7:15 – 9:15 a.m., off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees of the Raptor Course. The final round will be played Monday, May 26, from 7:15 – 9:15 a.m., off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees, with an awards ceremony and luncheon to follow. All are welcome to attend and admission is free. The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of more than 6,000 members from all 50 states and more than 45 foreign countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
