Palm Beach County Parks & Recreation Department 2018 Annual Report 2 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Isn’t it wonderful knowing you live in “Paradise”?

But what is it that makes Palm Beach County such a wonderful place? If you ask me, chief among the reasons is the many healthy and happy opportunities afforded us through our parks, open spaces and recreation programs.

And nothing makes you more proud than to have your goals and aspirations accomplished and validated at the highest level possible. In 2018, the Parks and Recreation Department was awarded the National Gold Medal for excellence in Parks and Recreation Management by the American Academy for Parks and Recreation Administration. Being recognized as the best of the best on the national stage reflects our commitment to the highest standards of service to our residents and visitors to Palm Beach County. It is also a reflection of the dedicated men and women who deliver that service every day.

2018 in Parks and Recreation was truly extraordinary. Our Ocean Rescue Team captured first place honors at the United States Lifesaving ERIC CALL Association Southeast Regional Competition. The internationally Director recognized Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens achieved re- accreditation with the American Alliance of Museums. Osprey Point Golf Course was one of nine courses in the world nominated as the World’s Best Eco Friendly Golf Facility by the World Golf Awards. Ten local athletes from our own Special Olympics Florida - Palm Beach County attended the USA Games in Seattle, WA and competed in bowling, swimming, track and field, golf and tennis. A very successful initiative, “Nature Ninja Warriors”, introduced underrepresented middle and high school youth to a diverse offering of outdoor experiences that taught life skills and broadened their knowledge and awareness of our environment and the natural world. We also implemented our “Parks2Work” Program that offered chronically homeless individuals paid jobs, wrap around social services and immediate housing to help end their cycle of homelessness and create contributing members of our community. We celebrated the opening of the “Orange Bowl Field” at Glades Pioneer Park in Belle Glade. This remarkable renovation of an existing football field was a collaboration between our department and the Orange Whether it’s offering programs to Bowl Committee to create a state-of-the-art facility.
