International Fire Fighter 15 Senate to Democrats and slow down Walker’s aggressive anti-labor agenda. On July 19, Dave Hansen, one of the Democrats who fled the state, easily defeated Republican challenger David Vanderleest in the first of nine Wisconsin recall elections. Elections for the six Republicans defending their seats take place August 9. The election for the other two Democrats defending their seats takes place August 16. Sensing possible defeat, Republicans resorted to nasty tricks in a desperate attempt to curb labor’s obvious political momentum. First, GOP state officials hatched a scheme to run fake Democrat candidates in primaries against the recall Democrats running against the Republican senators, a move to ensure primary elections and push general election polling into Mid-August. Since cross-party voting is allowed, this move would mean that GOP voters could swamp the Democratic primaries with enough votes in favor of the fakers to keep the real Democrats out of the general election. In at least one instance, Republican operatives handed out fliers urging Republicans to vote in the Democratic primary against real Democrat Jessica King and in favor of John Buckstaff, who is actually an 81-year-old Republican and donor to GOP state Senator Randy Hopper, whom King is challenging. While right-wingers focus their cynical zeal on cheating the state electoral process, rank-and-file fire fighters made sure to turn out as many labor-friendly voters as possible on Election Day. Despite the size and ferocity of the opposition, PFFW President Mahlon Mitchell says, “I am proud of the massive effort that Wisconsin fire fighters have added to the fight to counter Walker’s agenda.” Continued fromPage 15 “Scott Walker tried to split labor by excluding fire fighters from his heartless New Jersey the state close a fiscal deficit — created in anti-labor agenda,” says IAFF 5th District The dust is settling in New Jersey, but large part by his tax cut gifts to the wealthy Vice President Joe Conway. “He has the battle continues, after Governor Chris and corporations.
