It would be apparent to all stu- dents and parents that it isn’t possible to maintain a good understanding of the content being taught or develop the skills that teachers are focusing on without consistently being in class working on the tasks provided. Frequent absences without a struc- tured plan to support a student’s ongoing education will lead to a fragmented approach and this will make it increasingly difficult to keep on top of the work. Please encourage regular attendance and supply notes if your child is away or is late to school. The note should include the student’s name, roll class, clearly indicate the dates of absences and the reason. All notes must be signed by a parent or car- er. Class of the Week

Walking past the computer labs this week, I spotted Mrs Wiseman and her wonderful Year 7 history class. They are currently studying the topic of ‘Dreaming’ and were busy completing a task on re- searching and creating their own stories. History is covered in the junior school as a compulsory subject and can be studied in the senior school as a 2Unit subject in either Modern or Ancient, with an option to do a 1U extension. This is another great subject offered at Banora Point High School.

SOUTHERN CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGE

LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF!

As Marcel Proust, a late 19th century novelist wrote: “the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes”. Volunteer to host an interna- tional high school student in July 2013 through Southern Cross Cultural Exchange and prepare to be amazed at the way this unique and rewarding opportunity helps your fam- ily to become closer, to understand themselves better and to see the world in a new light.

Carefully selected students will arrive in July for one or two semesters from France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Japan, and Spain. They will attend a local secondary school, arrive with their own spending money and comprehensive insurance cover – all arranged by Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. Visit us at our website www.scce.com.au, email [email protected] or call us toll free on 1800 500 501, re- quest our international student profiles, and capture the spirit of family and friendship.

EXPERIENCE ANOTHER CUL- TURE IN 2013 AND IMPROVE YOUR LANGUAGE STUDIES AT HOME

In June-July students from over 20 countries around the world will be arriving in Australia to study at local high schools for 5 or 10 months.

Opportunities exist for families to act as a host family, in a volunteer capacity. Hosting can be on a temporary, short or long term basis. Host families help provide international stu- dents with the chance to study and expe- rience life in Australia. This is a great way to learn about another country and cul- ture, establish a lifelong link to a family in another country and contribute to international goodwill.

If your family can offer a friendly, sup- portive and caring home environment, contact us today.

To hear more about this wonderful op- portunity or our student exchange pro- grams out of Australia call Student Exchange Australia New Zealand on 1300 135 331 or visit www.studentexchange.org.au/host-a-student
