Chesapeake Bayhawks Lacrosse 4 Game 15: Chesapeake vs. Denver game notes Matchup Chesapeake will look to shake off a tough loss as they fly out to Denver to take on the first-place Outlaws. The teams, who have split 1-1 this season with wins at their home fields, have both already made the (MLL) playoffs, but will fight to change their seeding in the postseason. As it stands, Denver is the league’s top team and will slide into the one seed come playoff time. Chesapeake sits in third, claiming the corresponding seed. This would put the Bayhawks in a showdown against the Blaze, MLL’s second place team. With a win against the Outlaws, the Bayhawks could slide into second place and give themselves a preferred seeding option. It is still possible for the Bayhawks to regain first-place, but only if they defeat the Outlaws this weekend. Giving up the least goals in MLL (172GA), Chesapeake’s defense enters the week as a premier unit. The return of close defenseman Chris Fennell, who spent stints earlier in the season on Injured Reserve, has proven to be the missing piece to complement Jesse Bernhardt and Warren Jeffrey. In a career-year that he is continuing to build on, the Naval Academy grad has been a groundball machine (23GB) and has shut down some of the league’s best players, including Boston attackman Will Sands who was held to only two assists over the teams’ two-game season series. With Nick Manis recovering from injury, Matt Abbott has played major roles on the defensive midfield. Abbott, as one of the best two-way midfielders in professional lacrosse, has been able to use his wide array of talents to give Head Coach Dave Cottle’s defensive corps a lift in Manis’ absence. Also taking shifts as a defensive midfielder has beenRyan Keenan. Though primarily an offensive player, the Penn State product has used his speed and feisty playing style to fend away opposing midfielders. The defense will be going up against a group of savvy veterans on the Outlaws. Led by the ageless John Grant Jr., Denver touts the second-best scoring offense in the league (200GF, +16 goal differential). First-year attackmanRyan Lee, who assembled an impressive NCAA career at Division III’s RIT, leads the Outlaws in scoring (33G, 1 2ptG, 7A) and is a player the Bayhawks will want to focus on neutralizing immediately. Fortunately, the team has been successful at this task this season; they held Lee pointless in their August 10th meeting. A trio of prolific players,Zach Currier, Chris Aslanian, and Brendan Kavanagh follow Grant and Lee in scoring, each with at least 36 points. Chesapeake’s offense, like Denver’s, is potent; however they will need to be on the top of their game to keep pace with Denver. Recently, the team has been finding scoring from throughout the lineup in players likeShane Simpson and John Wagner. The team hopes that Lyle Thompson can find his scoring pace from earlier in the season (over five points-per-game) to help put this Bayhawks’ offense in the upper-tier in the league. Thompson finds himself in a special situation with 44 goals and 67 points this season. Both of these marks are one shy of tying the Bayhawks’ franchise record for single-season goals, both set by in 2003. With two goals or two points, the Onondaga attackman will claim sole possession of the franchise records and be cemented in an esteemed spot in Bayhawks franchise history. The Chesapeake Bayhawks will take on the Denver Outlaws in Denver, CO on September 14th at 5:00 PM ET. The game will be broadcast live on MyTV Baltimore and ESPN+ from Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on the campus of the University of Denver. STEELE GOT IT “Ageless” has been used to describe many players in Major League Lacrosse, including the likes of John Grant Jr. and Matt Abbott. There is one other player who certainly deserves this title: Steele Stanwick. The Virginia graduate and Tewaaraton winner has put together a lengthy and prolific career that is only getting better. Turning 30 years old the Thursday before the Denver game, Stanwick has put together a career year, tying his single-season high in goals (19) and setting a new best in points (45). Stanwick has also set new highs in man-up goals (2) and groundballs (18), tied his high in man-up assists (6), and is on pace to set a new season-high in games played with 15. Stanwick, so far in his career, has put together four seasons with more than 35 points and five seasons with over 30. As his career has progressed, the Baltimore native has aged like a fine wine, having three of his five best seasons come after the 2014 league season. Stanwick still seems to have more in the tank as his career progresses, and it is certainly welcomed as Chesapeake approaches postseason play. NOMINEES NAMED This past Friday, Major League Lacrosse announced its nominees for league awards at the 2019 Major League Lacrosse Honors on October 5th. The Bayhawks had one or more nominees in each category as the team rounds out an accolade-rich season. Headlining the 2019 MLL Honors nominees is Lyle Thompson. The creative attackman is a frontrunner for the Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year awards as the league’s best goal (44) and point (67) producer. Joining him as a nominee for “OPotY” is Steele Stanwick who has been one of the best playmakers in the league with 26 assists. On the other side of the ball, Jesse Bernhardt and Greg Danseglio have been named as Defensive Player of the Year nominees while Niko Amato is a Goalie of the Year nominee. His “box score stats” have not been league-leading, but Bernhardt is absolutely deserving of this award. Since his return from injury earlier in the season, Bernhardt has given the Bayhawks a jolt of life and been the backbone of the league’s best defense (172GA, lowest in MLL). Bernhardt is also performing at this level in the wake of losing his father, Jim Bernhardt, earlier this season. Danseglio, like Bernhardt, has been just as deserving and has given the Bayhawks’ defense a top performer at LSM. Rookie of the Year has two Bayhawks competing for the title. Close defenseman Warren Jeffrey and attackman Andrew Kew both have been nominated thanks to their superb seasons. Kew’s 18 goals put him above several veterans in the league while Jeffrey’s shutdown defense has neutralized an array of top attackmen in Major League Lacrosse. The two rookies have been excellently coached by Head Coach Dave Cottle who has been nominated for Coach of the Year honors. 2019 Game-By-Game Results Game Date Opp. Result Streak Record High (G) High (A) GWG Attendance 1 6/2 Dallas W (14-11) W1 1-0 Thompson (4) Stanwick (5) Bomberry 6,113 2 6/15 New York W (16-14) W2 2-0 Thompson (5) Stanwick (3) Thompson 2,723 3 6/29 Atlanta L (10-19) L1 2-1 Thompson (4) Stanwick, Thompson (2) - 7,128 4 7/4 Denver L (13-14) L2 2-2 Thompson (5) Stanwick (2) - 26,210 5 7/6 Atlanta W (16-13) W1 3-2 Thompson (5) Thompson (3) Watkinson 5,200 6 7/14 Dallas W (13-11) W2 4-2 Kew, Stanwick (3) Thompson (2) Thompson 3,102 7 7/20 New York L (10-14) L1 4-3 Heacock (3) Wagner (2) - 5,422 8 8/3 New York W (11-9) W1 5-3 Heacock (6) Stanwick (2) Wagner 4,234 9 8/4 New York W (24-7) W2 6-3 Heacock, Mariano (4) Keenan, Stanwick, Wagner (2) Kew 5,012 10 8/10 Denver W (12-9) W3 7-3 Thompson (3) Thompson (2) Isaiah Davis-Allen 4,619 11 8/17 Boston OTL (11-12) L1 7-4 Heacock (4) Thompson (4) - 7,624 12 8/24 Atlanta W (16-13) W1 8-4 Bomberry, Heacock (3) Stanwick (3) Heacock 1,548 13 8/25 Dallas L (13-14) L1 8-5 Heacock (3) Stanwick (4) - 6,814 14 9/7 Boston L (11-12) L2 8-6 Simpson, Thompson, Wagner (2) 5-tied (1) - 3,200 15 9/14 Denver ------16 9/20 Denver ------Chesapeake Bayhawks Lacrosse 5 Game 15: Chesapeake vs. Denver game notes
