Special Olympics Northern Beaches – Inclusive Young Athletes aged 2–8 years What? Special Olympics Sydney , Northern Beaches offers a program specifically designed for young athletes with an intellectual disability and their siblings. This inclusive multi-sport program develops the fundamental skills of all sports for children aged 2 to 8. The Program focuses on physical development of sport, with the awareness that all areas of development are incorporated. Confidence and skills result in the ability for children and their families to participate in further Special Olympics sports and activities, and or filter into community sport. Free Freedom Wheels Assessments by TAD Disability Services What? Freedom Wheels bikes are adaptive bicycles so children with additional needs can ride a bike, like their peers. Healthcare and engineering staff of TAD Disability Services hold bike clinics to assess each person (child aged 4 through to adults) and write a specification for a bike to meet their exact needs. These may include stabiliser wheels, postural supports, belts, footcups, towbars and modified handlebars. . Physical Health and Mental Illness Workshop What? Many people living with mental health issues also face significant physical health concerns due to a range of factors, such as medications, lifestyle issues, poverty and isolation. This workshop has a range of strategies to improve physical health within mental health contexts, and focuses on the importance of using an integrated approach when addressing physical and mental health needs of people with mental health issues and their carers. This workshop also looks at working in a multidisciplinary team, and at various support services and resources available in the community. Featuring Associate Professor Maria Kangas, Centre of Emotional Health Macquarie University. Although it is an unfortunate fact, a high proportion of people will experience highly stressful events during their lifespan. Ms Kangas' research focuses on understanding emotion regulation and coping strategies to help people emotionally adapt to stressful life events, including medical health problems. Ms Kangas will provide an insight into the common problems experienced by teens - including somatic/physical symptoms (eg headaches, stomach-aches) concurrent with anxiety and/or depression.
