Wales Golf Background

Wales Golf is the national governing body for responsible for promoting and developing the amateur game in the country.

Golf is one of the most widely played sports in Wales with approximately 100,000 participants of whom over 45,000 are members of clubs affiliated to Wales Golf.

Through its development team Wales Golf provides practical help and advice to affiliated clubs and runs numerous initiatives to help introduce juniors and adults to the sport. It runs high-performance programmes for upcoming and elite players, selects all national teams, manages a wide range of championships for club players up to elite level amateurs and is responsible for the administration of the golf handicapping system in Wales.

Following a period of 30 years with Wales Golf, Richard Dixon has announced that he will retire from the position of Chief Executive in the summer of 2021. Wales Golf now seeks a suitable successor to Richard to continue progress against the current strategic plan and lead the development and implementation of the next 5-year plan to take effect from 2023.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Board, the Chief Executive will lead Wales Golf’s strategy as it seeks to drive forward the through the breaking down of historic barriers to participation.

Consistent with this strategy the successful candidate will develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders including golf clubs across Wales and strategic partners such as and

the R&A. New commercial opportunities will need to be secured to provide additional funds for re- investment into the game in Wales.

The Chief Executive will need to demonstrate strategic vision, good judgement and be an exceptional team leader. Effective communication skills and an ability to interact with a wide range of stakeholders will be essential to the role.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities for the role include but are not limited to:

Leadership and strategic planning

Working with the Board, lead the development and delivery of Wales Golf’s strategy and the implementation of operational policies.

Deliver ongoing change to help promote inclusivity, equality and diversity throughout the sport and by doing so grow participation across Wales.

Engage with key stakeholders so that Wales Golf can take a leadership role in promoting sustainability throughout golf in Wales.

Lead and motivate staff and develop and promote team working and individual staff development to ensure that all staff have the skills needed to successfully perform their roles in a high performing team.

Manage the allocation of human resources to maximise delivery against Wales Golf’s strategic plan, adjusting as appropriate to recognise changing and competing demands.

Governance and financial stewardship

Ensure best practice standards of corporate governance throughout the organisation and full compliance with all regulatory obligations.

Through appropriate reporting ensure that the Board is fully informed on progress of key initiatives and matters of significance.

Working with the Treasurer, manage the annual budget and financial resources of Wales Golf in a prudent manner subject to board oversight.

Stakeholder relationships

Develop and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders including Welsh golf clubs, players, counties, Sport Wales, the R&A and commercial partners for the further development of golf in Wales.

Examine the route to develop a relationship between Wales Golf and golfers not currently affiliated to a club.

Ensure Wales Golf’s views are represented with relevant golfing bodies and government departments that can influence the structure and development of the sport.

Commercial opportunities, marketing and communications

Broaden the existing sources of revenue by identifying and securing commercial opportunities to provide additional streams of income for investment in the game.

Ensure that Wales Golf has an effective communications strategy with all stakeholders taking full advantage of digital channels where appropriate.

Be the primary spokesperson for Wales Golf in order to raise the profile of golf in Wales and further its development.
