Madaket Stable (Sol Kumin) Born: May 13, 1975 in Boston Residence: New York, Boston and Nantucket, Mass. Family: wife, Elizabeth; one daughter, Corey, and two sons, Sam and Jax Business: Chief Strategic Officer of Leucadia Asset Management. Founder and chief executive officer of Folger Hill Asset Management, an equity hedge fund launched in 2014. In April 2018 he merged Folger Hill with Schonfeld Strategic Advisors and took on the new role with Leucadia in September… Prior to launching Folger, Kumin spent 10 years with SAC Capital Advisors, most recently as chief operating officer. Folger Hill was named for the highest spot on his beloved Nantucket. • Racing: Madaket is one of the half-dozen or so stables owned by Kumin and is named for Madaket Beach and the Madaket section of Nantucket Island, where Kumin owns a vacation home. • Horses run under the Madaket banner as solely owned, and Madaket also races a multitude of others in more than 70 other partnerships with some of the sport’s most prominent owners, according to Equibase. • Madaket is the sole owner of record of Liam’s Charmer, who won the John Henry Turf Championship Stakes-G2 for trainer Michael McCarthy and is a contender for the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Turf. Liam’s Charmer will be the first solely owned Breeders’ Cup starter for Madaket. • Purchased a share of Hopeful Stakes winner Mind Control (Juvenile) after the Red Oak Stable homebred broke his maiden at Monmouth Park in his second start. • Other possible 2018 Breeders’ Cup runners which Madaket is also partnered on are dual Grade 1 winner on turf and dirt Catholic Boy (Classic); dual G1 winner Midnight Bisou (Distaff); Just A Game and First Lady winner A Raving Beauty (Filly & Mare Turf); Frank Kilroe Mile Stakes-G1 winner Bowie’s Hero (Mile); Grade 2 winner Mia Mischief (Filly & Mare Sprint); Reflect (Juvenile Fillies), Stellar Agent (Juvenile Fillies Turf or Juvnile Turf Sprint) and World of Trouble (Turf Sprint). • Through his multitude of other partnerships, including Head of Plains Partners, Sheep Pond Partners, and Monomoy Stable, Kumin has a piece of several other 2018 Breeders Cup possibles. • They include four-time Grade 1 winner Monomoy Girl (Distaff), dual Grade 1 winner on dirt and turf Yoshida (Classic), multiple Grade 1 winner and 2017-2018 Dubai Golden Shaheen- G1 winner Mind Your Biscuits, who was 3rd in the 2017 Sprint (Classic), and Whitmore (Sprint). • This year Kumin will own part of three horses in the Classic- Catholic Boy, Yoshida and Mind Your Biscuits- and the trio will be his first representatives in the Breeders’ Cup capstone race. • “I’ve never had a horse in that race before, and now there are three so it’s a very big deal and is pretty exciting. This year, the race looks pretty open, so we’ll see how it turns out. Acclerate is, obviously, the one to be the most scared of, but all three horses can run so we feel like we have a chance, which is all you really want,” he said. • Add that to the enormous accomplishment of owning part of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify. • When the now-retired Justify won the Kentucky Derby-G1 the day after Monomoy Girl, whom he also owns in part, captured the Kentucky Oaks-G1, Kumin became the first owner to win the Derby-Oaks double in 66 years since Calumet Farm won both milestone events in 1952 with Hill Gale and Real Quiet, respectively. • “Honestly, it was all a daze. It was amazing. It was so great. It was such a good crew. (Monomoy Girl) was a horse we bought as a baby and we named. It was (bloodstock agent) Liz Crow’s first ticket she ever signed, and she was (trainer) Brad Cox’ first Grade 1 winner. The entire thing was awesome,” he said. “Then to come back the next day and win the Derby (with Justify) was really the icing on the cake. It was a ridiculous weekend. We had two awesome days with the Derby/Oaks weekend and winning three grade ones (Yoshida won the Old Forester Turf Classic on Derby Day),” he said. “And then Justify went on to win the Triple Crown. What else can you say?” • Following Catholic Boy’s Travers Stakes-G1 win at Saratoga at the end of August, Kumin termed it a “bucket list” accomplishment. • “And then we had Travers Day with Catholic Boy and Whitmore (won the Forego-G1) won. We had the three days, Oaks, Derby and Travers, where all you can say is, “Oh, my God. But we’re never going to do this again so let’s just enjoy it as much as we can and hope it lasts for another four or five weeks,” he said. • At the end of September, in separate partnerships, Kumin would be the owner of the one- two finishers in the Cotillion Stakes-G1, despite the results of the post-race inquiry. The Brad Cox-trained Monomoy Girl finished in front of the Steve Asmussen-conditioned Midnight Bisou, who was the adjudged winner. • Was part owner of Preakness Stakes-G1 and Haskell Invitational-G1 winner Exaggerator. • Bought his first Thoroughbred in 2014 and his first win came in March of that year with Madaket Millie at Gulfstream Park. • A month later, he and partner Jay Hanley (Sheep Pond Partners) submitted the winning bid of $160,000 for future Breeders’ Cup Fillies Juvenile Turf winner Lady Eli in 2014 … A multiple Grade 1 winner, Lady Eli has earned close to $3 million and was the 2017 champion Turf Female. • Kumin owned a share of about a dozen 2017 Breeders’ Cup candidates in various partnerships, including at least seven under the Head of Plains banner. • Among that group were 2017 Arlington Million (G1) and Joe Hirsch Turf Stakes (G1) winner Beach Patrol (2nd Turf), Mind Your Biscuits (3rd in the 2017), multiple Grade 1 winner Lady Eli (7th in the Filly & Mare Turf), Dacita (4th in the Filly & Mare Sprint), Whitmore (8th in the Sprint) and Fanciful Angel (11th in the Turf). • Kumin owned a share of at least six horses who ran in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup … The best finishes were seconds by Lady Eli (FM Turf) and Wavell Avenue (FM Sprint) …Wavell Avenue was bidding for back-to-back Breeders’ Cup wins after capturing the 2015 Filly & Mare Sprint … The others were Undrafted (8th Turf Sprint), Mind Your Biscuits (3rd Sprint), Rymska (5th Juvenile Fillies Turf), Ticonderoga (4th Juvenile Turf). • Has ownership interest in about 90 horses, nine of which competed in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Championships – Slumber, Ray’s the Bar, Stallwalkin’ Dude, Sharla Rae, Gliding By, Undrafted, Last Waltz and Dacita, as well as Wavell Avenue.A co-owner with him in Undrafted is former New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker, who, indeed, was undrafted by any National Football League team. • Ascend, winner of the 2017 Manhattan Stakes-G1 was owned by Madaket in partnership. • Elysea’s World, who won three Grade 3 races in 2018 before her run in the EP Taylor-G1 October 13, is co-owned by Sheep Pond Partners with current and former Super Bowl- winning and New England Patriots captains and All-Pros Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo, and Devin McCourty. • Ascend, winner of the 2017 Manhattan Stakes-G1 was owned by Madaket in partnership. • For the transcontinental racing empire Kumin and his partners employ an impressive roster of trainers which includes Steve Asmussen, Bob Baffert, Chad Brown, Brad Cox, Keith Desormeaux, Mike McCarthy, Graham Motion, Bill Mott, Todd Pletcher, Greg Sacco, Jason Servis and Chad Summers. • There are currently more than 65 graded stakes winners Kumin has been associated with as part owner. • Is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore where he played on the lacrosse team and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and government. He serves on the board of John Hopkins’ school of arts and sciences. • Kumin has brought quite an array of new owners and fans into the sport. In addition, he has shown support for retired racehorses by donating a percentage of each horse’s Breeders’ Cup earnings to New Vocations racehorse adoption program. .
