Since its Grand Opening, Swanson Stadium has been home to an FGCU Baseball program, which quickly rose to national prominence from its 2002 inception. From 2008-2010, the FGCU Baseball program won back-to-back-to-back Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, was fast tracked to NCAA Division I membership, and produced two major leaguers in Chris Sale and Casey Coleman. At the center of the FGCU Athletic Complex, Swanson Stadium’s palm tree backdrop in the outfield, fitting for Southwest Florida, gives fans a beautiful view during Baseball games. In addition to its attractive surroundings, the 850-seat Swanson Stadium was built with a press box underneath the stands behind home plate and contains a permanent sound system for fans to take in the entire ambiance involved with America’s favorite past time. Swanson Stadium also arms the FGCU Baseball program with a facility to compete for a birth in the College World Series each year. Swanson Stadium is also known for its playing surface, which is considered the best collegiate baseball playing surface in the region, rivaling those of many Major League Baseball spring training complexes in the state of Florida. Originally designed for future expansion, Swanson Stadium has seen many improvements in recent years. In 2009, the new Outdoor Sports Complex (OSC) was built down the right field line of Swanson Stadium, which provided the baseball team with locker rooms, coach’s offices, a training room, and equipment room fitting of a Division I baseball program. The OSC also provided fans with Concessions and Restrooms down the right field line. Since the Outdoor Sports Complex (OSC) was built in the location of the original batting cages, a new lighted and covered hitting facility was built for the baseball team down the left field line of Swanson Stadium, complete with three hitting tunnels, as well as an open hitting area to allow the team extra hitting during all times of the day. Improvements continued in the summer of 2011, when the stadium was retrofitted with a permanent roof over the grandstands as well as adding shade structures over the ADA seating sections on the main level. All of the existing seating was removed and replaced with new chairback seats that match the school’s official Green and Blue colors. During the stadium renovation, large graphic panels were added between the roof support columns aimed to display the achievements and history of FGCU Baseball. Continued improvements were made to the stadium in the following summer of 2012 with the dugout expansion, which saw the dugouts double in size as they were extended outward and protective fences were installed in front. The following spring, the original press box was demolished and replaced with a brand new press box, which increased the size of the main press/media area, as well as adding field level suites on both sides of the main press area. Swanson Stadium improvements continued in the Summer of 2013 with the retrofitting of the lights to new Musco lighting. In the Fall of 2015, the outfield fence was reconfigured and new bullpens were built with the visiting bullpen moving to beyond Right Center Field and a new Home bullpen was created just beyond the 3rd base dugout. Then in the Fall of 2018, new wall padding was added around all of the fencing at Swanson Stadium to help improve the safety of the facility, as well as the aesthetic of the complex. Currently, a complete master plan for Swanson Stadium is being formulated to continue gradual improvements to the complex over the next 5-10 years.
