AWARDS-COMPETITIONS/EXHIBITIONS GRANTS/PRIZES/SCHOLARSHIPS.

*Contemporary Glass Society @ ‘New Designers 2013: Part 1’. Young masters of the art of glass in running for national prize. They combine creativity, innovation and enormous practical skill…and now the most outstanding graduate glass artists and designers have a chance to win a prestigious national prize. The Contemporary Glass Society will be awarding prizes worth more than £2,000.00 to exceptional glass graduates exhibiting at this year’s New Designers exhibition at the Business Design Centre in London. The first prize includes £250.00 in cash, a £100.00 Warm Glass voucher, a professional photo session with Simon Bruntnell worth £750.00, and a promotional and marketing package worth £400.00, including two years’ C.G.S. membership. New this year is an additional prize for commitment to skill, sponsored by acclaimed glassblower Simon Moore – £250.00 in cash and four one-to-one masterclasses at his London workshop. Alan J. Poole is also awarding books to all the selected graduates. ‘craft&design’ will be providing a year's subscription to the magazine and space in the Makers Gallery pages, together worth £180.00. Two runners up will receive vouchers from Creative Glass UK, and a promotional package worth £100.00, including a year’s C.G.S. membership. There will also be a number of commendations that will give artists valuable exposure in ‘Glass Network’, the C.G.S. magazine. The judges will be acclaimed glass artists Simon Moore, Katherine Coleman M.B.E., Amanda Simmons, Peter Layton and, representing the C.G.S., Karen Murphy. The judging will take place on June 27 at the Business Design Centre in Islington. This year the prize will be especially significant as it forms part of the Contemporary Glass Society’s ‘Glass Skills 2013’ – 12 months of exhibitions, events and workshops that explore the fusion of art and technique. Last year’s winner was Emma Hollins from the University Of Sunderland. Runners-up were Melissa Vogel from De Montfort University and Shaun Fraser from Edinburgh College Of Art. Commendations went to Kee-Ryong Choi, James Alexander, Candice Paffey and Alexander Pearce. “Since winning the C.G.S. Prize last year, I’ve been a part of some amazing exhibitions, such as BLAST! 2012 at ZeST Gallery, London, Shooting Star CHASE at the Royal College Of Art, London, and Glasshaus VII at Parndon Mill, Harlow,” says Emma. “I’ve been experimenting in mixing media such as painting and glass engraving and I am in the beginning stages of some collaborative works. The prize really helped me in getting my work recognised and I’ve also been able to set up my own mini studio. The photography part of the prize will be a great help for my new website, emmahollins.co.uk.” Shaun Fraser is currently carrying out an artist’s residency in northern Iceland, developing a body of work in glass based on his experiences there. Later in the spring, he’ll be taking up a residency in Nova Scotia. “Receiving the runner-up prize from C.G.S. has helped me in being selected for these programmes and provided me with a fantastic footing from which to go on to take the next steps in my artistic progression,” says Shaun. New Designers is held every June/July at the Business Design Centre in Islington. Around 3,500 newly graduated designer/makers come together from the top 200 design courses across the nation to meet industry employers, the media, trend predictors and a design-hungry public. There are nine design zones, covering everything from animation to architecture, graphics to glass and fashion to furniture. CALL TO ARTISTS:

Australian Glass Conference: Call To Irish Artists: The next Australian Glass Conference is in Adelaide in 2015! And we are all very excited and keen to showcase our amazing JamFactory and the Glass Department at the University Of South Australia that are all within a 5 minute walk of each other. We have a thriving community of many talented artists working in glass privately and in artist run studios; We have many great artist run Galleries, Commercial Galleries and Research Galleries that cater to all things glass. As part of the organising committee for 2015 and part of my own practice I will be curating two exhibitions in 2015. As a Dubliner born and bred lass I am very keen to get some Irish flavour in to the conference in 2015. So during my visit home in July 2013 I would love to meet as many Irish Artists as possible working predominantly in glass, both emerging and established professionals with a view of applying for funds here in Oz and in Ireland to get some of you over to Oz for a week or two, to form part of the conference’s exhibition, lecture and workshop programme. I am researching the possibility of funding that could tie in some workshops and lectures to other universities around OZ. Please contact Ursula Halpin on Email: [email protected] with your contact details so I can start emailing and organising some preliminary meetings in July.

06/07/13. Just Glass, ‘Back To The Real: The Return of the Crafts in a Virtual Age’. Tenth Anniversary Lecture by Jera May. Acknowledging the transformative effects of digital technologies on contemporary craft practice, artist and educator Jera May asks the question, ‘What is craft now?’ Exploring the recent resurgence in the need for handmade objects and their attached narratives, May will introduce you to different makers and a diverse range of work that exists somewhere between hand-made and digitally crafted. Jera May is currently managing the art department at Richmond Adult Community College (R.A.C.C.). She began her art education studying sculpture at Reigate School Of Art, followed by a BA in 3-D Design (Glass) at University Of Wolverhampton, under the professorship of Keith Cummings. Soon after graduating, she left England for South America and for two years developed art and craft programs in the Bolivian Amazon working with indigenous hunter- gatherers. She built wood fired kilns and helped to restore some of the lost traditional ceramics knowledge held within a range of displaced communities as well as introducing them to new materials and processes including kiln formed glass. After returning to Britain, she set up the Glass Department at R.A.C.C., wrote the book ‘Glass: An Inspirational’ Portfolio and in 2003 founded the Just Glass Society to help promote and support the department, the students and staff. May has been an advocate for the crafts throughout her career, recognising the importance of maintaining the heritage of craft and the preservation of craft skills through education. Returning to education herself in 2008, she completed her M.A. in Fine Art (Sculpture) at the University of Arts, London. This led to a series of exhibitions and continued work combining video and projected imagery with the traditions of sculpture, installation and collage. R.A.C.C. has a dynamic crafts provision having had over 6000 enrolments on a range of crafts courses in the last five years. It is currently going through some exciting changes, which will culminate in a new purpose built art school in the heart of Richmond- Upon-Thames. With one foot firmly in the past and the other in the future, the art school at R.A.C.C. hopes to build on its strong craft identity, extending the equipment and facilities to engage further with future technologies and creative possibilities. 2013 International Neon Workshops: 25/07/1328/07/13. Keep Neon and Carry On. £650.00. Neon Workshops have been busy through the winter and can now proudly confirm not one but two extraordinary 4-day neon courses organized for Summer 2013. The first,’ Keep Neon and Carry On’ to be held at the end of July, sees special guest artist Angus Powers (US) pushing experimentation in furnace glass and neon to the limits! The four-day workshop, with support from Wheater & Bickerstaff, will be all about experimenting and expanding perceptions of what one can do with neon and hot glass. Evening events and presentations from tutors will argue why we should hold onto neon and bring it into the 21st. Century. The course will include neon making and glass blowing. Experience is preferable but not necessary. Angus MacDiarmid Powers is the assistant professor of Glass in the department of Sculpture at Alfred University, New York, USA. As a celebrated artist, he has exhibited and taught throughout the USA, Europe and Scandinavia. 12/09/1315/09/13. Moving Neon. £565.00. Our second major neon workshop will be held in September 2013, focusing on animation of and kinetic movement with neon light. To accompany his UK exhibition here this year, Los Angeles based neon artist Michael Flechtner will be flying over to share the rare and often forgotten skills of making neon move. Through an intense schedule of demonstrations, hands-on practical exercises, discussions and presentations, participants will be guided and inspired into making their own sequencing neon art. Experience in working with neon and electronics is not essential. Michael Flechtner is a widely published and exhibited artist, whom has won numerous awards including the J.Paul Getty Trust Fund Fellowship in 1999. He is a board member for The Museum of Neon Art and will be showing his first UK solo exhibition here at Neon Workshops 25/09-25/11/13. A schedule will be forwarded to participants ahead of the workshops. Class will start at 10:00 and finish at 17:00, with a one hour break for lunch. On the glass blowing day (Friday) during the workshop Keep neon and Carry On, we will depart Neon Workshops at 07:30 in order to be ready to start at 10:00. There will be 3 evenings of presentations/events relating to the theme of each workshop. There are only 8 places available on each of the two above mentioned workshops, and we are accepting participants as of now on a first come first served basis. You can buy your workshop online with Paypal or contact Neon Workshops for further info. Our online shop is fully up and running, where you can find workshop gift vouchers, limited edition prints, books and more. The Workshops fee includes materials but not a neon power supply/transformer. High frequency neon transformers are available from Neon Workshops at £65.00 each. Food is not included in this workshop fee. Neon Workshops is located in Wakefield city center, there is a wide choice of food outlets. We can forward a recommended accommodation list on request. Beyond 2013 …Northern Lights A landmark mobile neon workshop: Reykjavik, Iceland, February 2014, £980.00. A four-day Mobile Neon Workshop taught by several artists of international repute, working in neon and light, plus evening events that will take place in Reykjavik, Iceland during February next near.
