R. Stoneback. On behalf of the Graduate Program, we want to thank all of the participants (our two keynote speakers/ performers, student presenters, honored guests, featured Hootenanny per- formers and surprise visitors) for making this symposium an extraordinary event. We are especially grateful to Jim Rooney and Happy Traum for their generous permission to publish here for the frst time their interviews and Traum’s essay that presents the core of his keynote performance. And heartfelt thanks to Nancy Johnson, for her encouragement of the conception of this symposium and, as English Department Chair, her enthusiastic support dur- ing the two years of making the program. Te 2018 English Graduate Symposium, on the topic of translation, will be directed by Professor Michelle Woods. Look for a call for papers from Prof. Woods in the fall. Te submission deadline for Volume XXIX of the Review is December 15, 2017. We welcome poetry, book reviews, and critical essays concerning any area of literary studies. Please see submission guidelines on page 199. Students writing a thesis in 2017 (ENG590) are also encouraged to submit an abstract for publication in next year’s volume. Stoneback In this issue, Volume XXVIII of Te Shawangunk Review, we present the proceedings of the 28th Annual English Graduate Symposium—“Poems, Bal- lad, Songs,” Tat is, we present as far as mere print can proceed—without the music that flled the air during the eight-hour program at the College Ter- race on April 12, 2016—a record of what transpired during an extravaganza that included a total of 26 listed speakers and singers. And two extraordinary keynote speaker/performers, Jim Rooney and Happy Traum. Both of our key- noters are legendary fgures in the history of American folksong and music, with deep roots in the Urban Folk Revival and vast experience in that arena, a journey that began for both of them in the 1950s. For over 60 years, Rooney and Traum have played key roles in the world of American Folksong—as per- formers, singers, songwriters, record producers, music publishers, writers, editors, and teachers. Te editor of these symposium proceedings considered including in this issue complete bibliographies and discographies that would list the manifold achievements of Rooney and Traum over the past six-and- half decades—but such an inclusion would have made this issue twice as long. Te frst keynote presentation, Jim Rooney’s “In It for the Long Run: A Musical Odyssey,” entranced his audience with its seamless interplay of anecdote and performance of songs as he looked back over his long life in American music that began in the early 1950s. Readers may recapture the spirit of Rooney’s keynote by reading his 2014 memoir from the University of Illinois Press In It for the Long Run: A Musical Odyssey. Tat volume amounts to a love letter to Americana, to American roots music, from folk to coun- try, blues to bluegrass, in which Rooney evokes his history as performer and calls the roll of the famous names he has worked with as a Grammy-winning producer and recording engineer—from Iris Dement to Nanci Grifth, John Prine to Townes Van Zandt and many others.

Creator: Diana Davies Title: The Diana Davies Photograph Collection Extent: 8 binders containing contact sheets, slides, and prints; 7 boxes (8.5”x10.75”x2.5”) of 35 mm negatives; 2 binders of 35 mm and 120 format negatives; and 1 box of 11 oversize prints. Abstract: Original photographs, negatives, and color slides taken by Diana Davies. Date span: 1963-present. Bulk dates: Newport Folk Festival, 1963-1969, 1987, 1992; Philadelphia Folk Festival, 1967-1968, 1987. Provenance The Smithsonian Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections acquired portions of the Diana Davies Photograph Collection in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Ms. Davies photographed for the Festival of American Folklife. More materials came to the Archives circa 1989 or 1990. Archivist Stephanie Smith visited her in 1998 and 2004, and brought back additional materials which Ms. Davies wanted to donate to the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives. In a letter dated 12 March 2002, Ms. Davies gave full discretion to the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage to grant permission for both internal and external use of her photographs, with the proviso that her work be credited “photo by Diana Davies.” Restrictions Permission for the duplication or publication of items in the Diana Davies Photograph Collection must be obtained from the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections. Consult the archivists for further information.     B AR B ARA C HING Happily Ever After in the Marketplace: The Ballads of the Southern Mountains and the Escape from Old Europe Between 1882 and 1898, Harvard English Professor Francis J. Child published The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, a five volume col- lection of ballad lyrics that he believed to pre-date the printing press. While ballad collections had been published before, the scope and pur- ported antiquity of Child’s project captured the public imagination; within a decade, folklorists and amateur folk song collectors excitedly reported finding versions of the ballads in the Appalachians. Many enthused about the ‘purity’ of their discoveries – due to the supposed isolation of the British immigrants from the corrupting influences of modernization. When Englishman Cecil Sharp visited the mountains in search of English ballads, he described the people he encountered as “just English peasant folk [who] do not seem to me to have taken on any distinctive American traits” (cited in Whisnant 116). Even during the mid-century folk revival, Kentuckian Jean Thomas, founder of the American Folk Song Festival, wrote in the liner notes to a 1960 Folk- ways album featuring highlights from the festival that at the close of the Elizabethan era, English, Scotch, and Scotch Irish wearied of the tyranny of their kings and spurred by undaunted courage and love of inde- pendence they braved the perils of uncharted seas to seek freedom in a new world. Some tarried in the colonies but the braver, bolder, more venturesome of spirit pressed deep into the Appalachians bringing with them – hope in their hearts, song on their lips – the song their Anglo-Saxon forbears had gathered from the wander- ing minstrels of Shakespeare’s time.

    Dan Hicks’ Caucasian Hip-Hop For Hicksters Published February 19, 2015 | Copyright @2015 Straight Ahead Media Author: Steve Roby Showdate : Feb. 18, 2015 Performance Venue : Yoshi’s Oakland Bay Area legend Dan Hicks performed to a sold-out crowd at Yoshi’s on Wednesday. The audience was made up of his loyal fans (Hicksters) who probably first heard his music on KSAN, Jive 95, back in 1969. At age 11, Hicks started out as a drummer, and was heavily influenced by jazz and Dixieland music, often playing dances at the VFW. During the folk revival of the ‘60s, he picked up a guitar, and would go to hootenannies while attending San Francisco State. Hicks began writing songs, an eclectic mix of Western swing, folk, jazz, and blues, and eventually formed Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks. His offbeat humor filtered its way into his stage act. Today, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Hicks sums up his special genre as “Caucasian hip-hop.” Over four decades later, Hicks still delivers a unique performance, and Wednesday’s show was jammed with many great moments. One of the evenings highlights was the classic “I Scare Myself,” which Hicks is still unclear if it’s a love song when he wrote it back in 1969. “I was either in love, or I’d just eaten a big hashish brownie,” recalled Hicks. Adding to the song’s paranoia theme, back-up singers Daria and Roberta Donnay dawned dark shades while Benito Cortez played a chilling violin solo complete with creepy horror movie sound effects.
